Book excerpt: This edition includes: -Several illustrations from the original work -Extended and up to date introduction -A discussion of the structure of the book First published in 1516, Saint Thomas More's Utopia is one of the most important works of European humanism. Through the voice of the mysterious traveller Raphael Hythloday, More describes a pagan, communist city-state governed by reason. Addressing such issues as religious pluralism, women's rights, state-sponsored education, colonialism, and justified warfare, Utopia seems remarkably contemporary nearly five centuries after it was written, and it remains a foundational text in philosophy and political theory. Precminent More scholar Clarence H. Miller does justice to the full range of More's rhetoric in this new translation. Professor Miller includes a helpful introduction that outlines some of the important problems and issues that Utopia raises, and also provides informative commentary to assist the reader throughout this challenging and rewarding exploration of the meaning of political community.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Utopia of Sir Thomas More: In Latin From The; Edition of March 1518, and in English From the First Edition of Ralph Robynson's Translation in 1551, With Additional Translations, Introduction and Notes Utopia on some of the great questions of the day, by studying the circumstances amidst which it was composed. It is now the fashion, in some quarters, to try to detach More as far as possible from the great movement known as the Humanist. And certainly, if the only accredited representatives of that movement were such men as Poggio and Filelfo, or even as Politian and Valla, More could have had but small sympathy with it. But that great tide of reawakening thought and energy flowed in many channels. Many others besides those mentioned drank of its streams, and found them not Circean. And if it is fair to cite More's later writings to prove that he never could have really held some of the opinions which he seems to advocate in the Utopia, it is at least as fair to lay stress on the time and circumstances of its origin. It was written - the greater part of it, at least - at Antwerp, a city than which no other in the Netherlands, according to Ullmann, was more deeply imbued with the spirit of the Reformation. If it was not a true child of the Renaissance, it was ushered into the world with all the credentials of such a birth. It had commendatory verses hung about it by Cornelius Schreiber of Alst, who five years later was in prison at Brussels for heresy; and by Gerhard Geldenhaur of Nimeguen, who had already published what More calls biting satires upon the religious orders, and who, after being himself a monk, embraced the reformed faith, and died a married layman. On its second appearance, the Utopia was prefaced by a long letter from Bude, the restorer of Greek learning in France; who, as such, was suspected by many of a leaning to heretical opinions; and who had at any rate inserted, in a work preceding More's by a year or two, a very bitter, and not very generous, invective on the lately deceased Pontiff, Julius II. Book excerpt: Excerpt from More's Utopia He next complains of the raising of rents beyond the real value of the land, of the number of idle retainers who when their masters die must steal or starve, of the unnecessary multitudes of soldiers that are kept, of the decay of husbandry, and the great evil of increased sheep-farming, seeing that it employs few men while husbandry furnishes work and wages for many. He then proceeds to point out the dearness of all commodities in the land, victuals, wool and cattle; ispeaks in strong terms of the licentiousness in manners and of the greed of the rich, who by monopohes and engrossing regulate the markets just as they please. Book Three Early Modern Utopias

Download or read book Three Early Modern Utopias written by Thomas More and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1999-11-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas More: Utopia/ Francis Bacon: New Atlantis/Henry Neville: The Isle of Pines With the publication of Utopia (1516), Thomas More introduced into the English language not only a new word, but a new way of thinking about the gulf between what ought to be and what is. His Utopia is at once a scathing analysis of the shortcomings of his own society, a realistic suggestion for an alternative mode of social organization, and a satire on unrealistic idealism. Enormously influential, it remains a challenging as well as a playful text. This edition reprints Ralph Robinson's 1556 translation from More's original Latin together with letters and illustrations that accompanied early editions of Utopia. Utopia was only one of many early modern treatments of other worlds. This edition also includes two other, hitherto less accessible, utopian narratives. New Atlantis (1627) offers a fictional illustration of Francis Bacon's visionary ideal of the role that science should play in the modern society. Henry Neville's The Isle of Pines (1668), a precursor of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, engages with some of the sexual, racial, and colonialist anxieties of the end of the early modern period. Together these texts illustrate the diversity of the early modern utopian imagination, as well as the different purposes to which it could be put. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book excerpt: De Optimo Republicae Statu deque Nova Insula Utopia (translated On the Best State of a Republic and on the New Island of Utopia) or more simply Utopia is a 1516 book by Sir (Saint) Thomas More. The book, written in Latin, is a frame narrative primarily depicting a fictional island society and its religious, social and political customs. The name of the place is derived from the Greek words οὐ u ("not") and τόπος tópos ("place"), with the topographical suffix -εία eía, hence Οὐτοπεία outopeía (Latinized as Utopia), "no-place land." It also contains a pun, however, because "Utopia" could also be the Latinization of Εὐτοπεία eutopeía, "good-place land," which uses the Greek prefix ευ eu, "good," instead of οὐ. One interpretation holds that this suggests that while Utopia might be some sort of perfected society, it is ultimately unreachable. Despite modern connotations of the word "utopia," it is widely accepted that the society More describes in this work was not actually his own "perfect society." Rather he wished to use the contrast between the imaginary land's unusual political ideas and the chaotic politics of his own day as a platform from which to discuss social issues in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Perfecting the Earth: A Piece of Possible History This is a Utopian book, but its Utopia is not, as Utopias generally are said to be, in the clouds; on the contrary it is worked out with much detail in accordance with a natural order of sequence from existing conditions, with every point definite in time and place, true in all fundamental physical features to the best maps, true also to the law of cause and effect and duly regarding the limitations of nature. Some to whom this book, in manuscript, has been shown, Object that it is too scientific; perhaps it is the most scientific of Utopian books. That Utopias, fro-m Bellamy back to Plato, are in cloudland. Unscientific, out of touch with reality and unattainable, is the charge which these critics make, while the logical steps required to make Utopia scientific and plant it on the rocks are the features which, when presented, they most object to. This book, however, is written in the belief that these steps are needed. The aim has been to limit the narra tive to the possible, and, following the steps related, to the practicable, while each consequence stated must necessarily follow from the measures preceding. -if these details had been omitted, then my Utopia, like the other Utopias, would have been in the clouds and the purpose of the book could not have been attained. If the earth is ever to be perfected, such meas ures as are here detailed must be taken, and as in the order of nature first things must be done first, so in the plan of this book first things are first related. In necessary sequence from these measures, from a condition natural and probable as things are going, the purpose is to evolve the conduct of a world as it is conceived that the world ought to be conducted, and to plant in the minds of readers a better ideal than that which usually animates mankind. In building an edifice the foundation must first be laid, but, while the steps in that part of the structure are not without a certain interest in themselves, the interest felt there is mainly reflected from the superstructure and the purposes which it is to serve. In this book the first twelve chapters may be re garded' as the laying of a foundation. The building of the superstructure is comprised in the twelve chapters following, while nine chapters at the conclusion of the book portray the life and conditions prevailing in the perfected earth after the work is practically completed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utopia By Sir Thomas More The first edition of Utopia was made by Tomas More's friend, Erasmus of Rotterdam in Leuven. There Utopia was written in Latin. At the author's motherland the first English translation was published in 1551, after Tomas More's execution and death of the King Henry VIII who at the beginning was the thinker's favourer, but later became his persecutor. It is a paradox that a faithful catholic Tomas More describes in his Utopia traditions, which totally contradict the canons of Catholicism. Since recently the Catholic Church accepts understandingly divorces, but other rights from Utopia (marriage for churchmen, women as priests) are still unacceptable for Vatican. And the most radical rights (e.g. euthanasia) are recognised only in a very few, most liberal countries of the world.
