Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Training in the School and Home: A Manual for Teachers and Parents The aim of this Handbook is to furnish teachers with a manual for moral training in elementary schools. It is not a guide for teaching ethics to children, for such instruction belongs to a later period of their development. It merely aims to assist teachers in their efforts to train children systematically in the virtues. Such training, however, involves imparting moral lessons, and of course the teacher must know what these lessons are, and when and how they should be imparted. This book deals briefly, and in a very concrete manner, with the subject matter and methods involved in such moral training. It is the outgrowth of the authors' experience in preparing a graded system of moral instruction by means of fairy tale, myth, fable, legend, parable, allegory, hero and heroine tales, biographical sketch, and historical event, in the form of a series of literary and ethical readers (The Golden Rule Series, The Macmillan Company, New York). The book may be used independently or in connection with the Series. It is the earnest hope of the authors that both the Handbook and the Series may prove serviceable to teachers desirous of introducing systematic moral training into elementary schools, and to parents desirous of introducing such training into the home. Book Moral Education in School and Home

Download or read book Moral Education in School and Home written by J. O. Engleman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Education in School and Home Though there is universal agreement that moral education is the supreme objective in public-school work, the literature dealing with this aspect of the work is not very extensive. Of the few books that have been written, the writer has not seen one that undertakes to analyze the possibilities for moral instruction or training in the everyday activities of the school. It seemed to the writer, therefore, that there is a distinct place for such a book in teachers' reading circles and in normal school and other courses for teacher-training. The writing of this book was undertaken, however, with a full appreciation of the difficulties involved in saying anything helpful to teachers or parents who are concerned with the problem of character-building in school and home. No claim is made for the discovery of any specifics, or any royal roads to the desired goal. Every child presents a new problem. Individual differences among children are so numerous that successful dealing with one is by no means a guarantee of success in dealing with another. Endless study, tact, sympathy, and charity are demanded of every teacher who would direct, guide, lead, or assist a child into the moral life which should be his. On the other hand, there are more elements of likeness than of difference among children. On the side of inheritance they all have instincts, impulses, and a psychophysical organism attuned to a world of stimuli to which they must respond. In a given school they find those stimuli in the teacher, their classmates, their books and lessons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... Part IV: The Home CHAPTER XIX MORAL EDUCATION IN THE HOME The Fundamental Aims and Methods of Moral Education the Same in the Home and the School --Since the moral spirit is one, and the child in the home is the same being that he is in the school, the fundamental aims and (in essence) methods of moral education will be identical, whoever conducts it and under whatever conditions it may be carried on. All that needs to be done in this chapter, therefore, is to point out the principles and make some suggestions with regard to their application by parents. The most fundamental principles of moral education, as I conceive them, are stated above in Chapters II, V, XI, XII, XIII and XVI. I shall not, of course, attempt to repeat, even in summary, the contents of these portions of the book. All I can do is to show what form they take when applied to the problems raised by the children in the home. The Value of General Principles as a Guide to Practise.--Aristotle defined virtue (or excellence, as we ought to translate the word he used) as a mean between two extremes. Bunyan put the same thing more picturesquely when he represented Christian's way toward the Heavenly City as a narrow path between a very deep ditch on the right hand and a very dangerous quag on the left. This picture enables us to represent quite accurately the relation of all principles, including educational principles, to life. They can tell us in what direction the Heavenly City lies. They can suggest reasons why, fleeing in all haste from the City of Destruction, we should repair thither, at whatever cost. But beyond this their field of usefulness is an extremely limited one. For the correct application of them to a concrete situation involves the ability to see a narrow...
