Book Moral Judgment Development and Friendship Intimacy in Early Adolescence

Download or read book Moral Judgment Development and Friendship Intimacy in Early Adolescence written by Rebecca L. Grime and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study investigated the processes mediating the early adolescent transition from Stage 2 to Stage 3 of moral judgment maturity. In particular, the current research study examined the relationship between moral judgment maturity and aspects of friendship intimacy in an adolescent sample, with the secondary aim of replicating and possibly explaining the early adolescent gender difference in moral judgment maturity favoring females found by a previous study (Garmon et al., 1996). The current sample consisted of 104 students representing the sixth, eighth, and tenth grades from Midwestern inner-city middle and high schools. Though the present study failed to replicate the gender difference in moral judgment maturity found by Garmon et al. (1996), a significant relationship was found between moral judgment maturity and friendship intimacy, particularly in the 6th grade sub-sample. A cognitive delay evidenced in the current sample may have attenuated the results and limited the comparison to the previous results of Garmon et al. (1996).

This book focusses primarily on a specific set of intrapsychic factors involved in prosocial responding, especially emotions and cognitions believed to play a major role in altruistic behaviour. In the final chapters these intrapsychic factors are also discussed in relation to a variety of other relevant factors including socialization and situational influences on altruism.

This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Book The Experience of Close Friendship in Adolescence

Download or read book The Experience of Close Friendship in Adolescence written by Niobe Way and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2005-04-19 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this issue, we present findings from four studies that employed qualitative methodology to gain insight into the how and the why of close friendships. How do adolescents experience trust and intimacy in their friendships? Why are these relational experiences critical for emotional adjustment? And how does the social and cultural context shape the ways in which adolescents experience their close friendships? The studies reveal the ways in which adolescents from diverse cultural backgrounds speak about their close friendships and the individual and contextual factors that shape and are shaped by their experiences of close friendships. Close friendships among adolescents have been the topic of serious scholarly investigation since Harry Stack Sullivan began to theorize on the benefits of chumships over five decades ago. An increasingly large body of empirical research on the experiences and developmental consequences of close friendships has found that close friendships are critical to psychological, social, and academic adjustment. The study of close friendship, however, has been limited by its almost exclusive reliance over the past few decades on quantitative methods that are able to investigate the who (for example, the demographics of children's friends) and what (for example, are the effects of friendship on adjustment) of friendships but not the dynamic processes underlying the who and the what. This is the 107th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development.

This follow-up to The Moral Domain carries forward the exploration of new ways of modeling moral behavior. Whereas the first volume emphasized the work of Lawrence Kohlberg and the tradition of cognitive development, The Moral Self presents a paradigm that also incorporates noncognitive structures of selfhood. The concerns of the sixteen essays include the diversity of moral outlooks, the dynamics of creating a moral self, cognitive and noncognitive prerequisites of the psychological-development of autonomy and moral competence, and motivation and moral personality. Download or read book Girls at Puberty written by J. Brooks-Gunn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of this volume at this time appears particularly auspi cious. Biological, psychological, and social change is greater during the pubertal years than at any other period since infancy. While the past two decades have witnessed a virtual explosion of productive research on the first years of life, until recently research on adolescence, and particularly on puberty and early adolescence, has lagged substantially behind. This book provides encouraging evidence that things are changing for the better. Considered separately, the individual chapters in this book include important contributions to our growing knowledge of the biological mechanisms involved in pubertal onset and subsequent changes, as well as of the psychological and social aspects of these changes, both as con sequences and determinants. In this regard, the book clearly benefits from the breadth of disciplines represented by the contributors, includ ing developmental endocrinology, adolescent medicine, pediatrics, psy chology, and sociology, among others.
