This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moqui Pueblo Indians of Arizona and Pueblo Indians of New Mexico The Moqui Pueblos live upon lands in Arizona which they were permitted to occupy by the Spanish and Mexican owners, and which became grants by reason of town occupation for a long period, These grants are not yet defined, but were tacitly recognized by President Arthur in his proclamation of December 16, 1882, when he threw about them the protection of a reservation to keep off white people and the Navajos. These Indians are citizens of the United States under the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. 16 of the pueblos of New Mexico own their lands in fee (3 are reserved) and the inhabitants of all are citizens of the United States. The allotment of the lands of the Moqui Pueblos (which in the case of the Pueblos can only be done by themselves), compelling the holders to reside upon them, would abolish the villages and pueblos, disperse these Indians, and make them dependents. Book excerpt: The Hopi (then "Moqui") Snake Dance so captured the imaginations of outsiders when it was first reported in the late nineteenth century that soon non-Indian spectators outnumber participants and led the tribe to ban their attendance. This 1884 account is notable for the author having been granted rare privileges in observing dance-related activities.

Book excerpt: An authoritative treatment of the social, cultural, and ethnohistorical data on both the Eastern and Western Pueblos! The information contained in this case study is the result of the author's lifetime spent among the Pueblos. "I have lived in or visited every village small and large from the Hopi towns of lower and upper Moencopi in Arizona to the double apartment buildings of Taos Pueblo in northern New Mexico," writes the author in his preface. He writes not of a single people and their culture but of a group of related peoples and their adaptation through time to their changing physical, socioeconomic, and political environments. A rare, inside view of native life and culture by an anthropologist who is himself a Pueblo Indian.
