Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I n 2006, author Lynette Wells lost her husband of twenty years and her mother in a span of six weeks. She was overcome with grief and couldnt understand her intense unfamiliar emotions. In Moon Shadows, Flowers, and Butterflies, she tells how a creative process helped her make sense of her situation. She shares her story of how she journeyed through her grief, including the images and stories inspired and revealed to her through the beauty and strength of nature. Wells narrates how she could not find the words to express the intense emotion she carried every waking moment, and then she decided to try painting, one of her favorite pastimes. She randomly chose colors and watched them flow effortlessly across the canvas, shapes turning into images to give her a visual view of the emotion felt at that moment. Once the picture evolved, words were revealed, and she slowly began to understand what seemed like a tangled knot buried deep within. Moon Shadows, Flowers, and Butterflies discusses how her sadness gradually transformed to moments of happiness as she reflected on memories and stories of loved ones. It offers hope that the creative process might guide others who are journeying on the grief path to find peace and happiness.

Book Between a Shadow and the Moon

Download or read book Between a Shadow and the Moon written by Susan Mary Stokholm and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of my story invites the reader to search for a mystical place that is far away from the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives: a place where we can tune into another dimension, and see the natural world from ground-level: in this case through the eyes of a snail. It is a humerous story with an underlying philosophical seriousness: a search for answers for some of the deepest questions we can ask. Our snail is called Alfred for some unaccountable reason. He wants to know why? He comes to the conclusion that he cannot find the answer at home, so he travels out into the great wide world. His journey to the Continent and home again leads him to places and encounters that he had never dreamed of. He ends up in France, and is first held capture in a snail farm. Luckily for him, and for us, he is rejected. However the experience opens up his mind, and a host of other questions are added to his why? He meets all kinds of friends that supply him with new knowledge. The moon, the wind, Mother Earth, the sun and the river tutor him about the role they play together, and teach him that everything is interconnected, and that we all share the same life. He learns of the harsh realities of life, but that it is human beings that have been busy changing the face of the world, and have consequently disturbed a vital balance in the short time they have been in existence. Can a mere snail help us each find a new respect for our fellow creatures, and open our eyes to the miracle of life that is right in front of us?

Book Avicenna and I

    Book Details:
  • Author : Manoucher Parvin
  • Publisher : Ibex Publishers, Inc.
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 1588140482
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Avicenna and I written by Manoucher Parvin and published by Ibex Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Avicenna and I" is a love saga spanning here and the hereafter; it is a journey of spirits toward immortality. Together two lovers explore the city of Hamadan in north-west of Iran, one of the oldest residences of civilisation, where the tomb of one of history's most remarkable thinkers, Avicenna, lies. To ascend from what they are to what they dream to be, the lovers seek and find the spirit of Avicenna. From him-the prince of medicine and the leading wise man-they learn how to heal the body, the mind, the spirit and even love, and how to tend to a wounded nature. They discover the path to immortality. "Avicenna and I" strips history naked of its pretensions and shatters the myth of the East as a place of unreason-deserving to be subjugated by the West -- and establishes that the Italian Renaissance was merely a continuation of the Persian Renaissance which occurred in the Golden Era of Avicenna. In this unforgettable novel the future and the past recreate one another and set the present afire with passion for immortal wisdom, and immortal love and truth. The reader is invited to view the mind and the universe, intuition and reason, science and faith, and life and death with a profoundly new understanding. The trials and tribulations of the characters, even history, on their transcendental journey are recounted with a pen searching for the beginning and the end of everything -- for the answers God never created. So humans must invent the answers as we have invented many things God did not create. This novel is a chapter in the book of answers.

Book Sheep Count Flowers

Download or read book Sheep Count Flowers written by Micaela Chirif and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If people count sheep to fall asleep, then... what do sheep count? Flowers, says this beautifully fanciful dream of a book. Sunflowers, roses, geraniums, jasmine. And there's lots of OTHER things you probably don't know about sheep...Sheep have neither pajamas nor pillows nor slippers. They tell bedtime stories about rhinoceroses and airplanes. They ONLY fly when they're sleeping, like butterflies circling the sun. In fact, there are sheep that sparkle in the dark like stars and fireflies. Or are there? Look closer at the light-as-a-laugh paintings by Amanda Mijangos, and you just might start wondering if all those adventurers are children in sheep's clothing!

Book The Red Brush

Download or read book The Red Brush written by Wilt L. Idema and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 958 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the most exciting recent developments in the study of Chinese literature has been the rediscovery of an extremely rich and diverse tradition of women’s writing of the imperial period (221 B.C.E.–1911 C.E.). Many of these writings are of considerable literary quality. Others provide us with moving insights into the lives and feelings of a surprisingly diverse group of women living in Confucian China, a society that perhaps more than any other is known for its patriarchal tradition. Because of the burgeoning interest in the study of both premodern and modern women in China, several scholarly books, articles, and even anthologies of women’s poetry have been published in the last two decades. This anthology differs from previous works by offering a glimpse of women’s writings not only in poetry but in other genres as well, including essays and letters, drama, religious writing, and narrative fiction. The authors have presented the selections within their respective biographical and historical contexts. This comprehensive approach helps to clarify traditional Chinese ideas on the nature and function of literature as well as on the role of the woman writer."

Download or read book Miss MacIntosh My Darling written by Marguerite Young and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 1420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel is one of the most ambitious and remarkable literary achievements of our time. It is a picaresque, psychological novel—a novel of the road, a journey or voyage of the human spirit in its search for reality in a world of illusion and nightmare. It is an epic of what might be called the Arabian Nights of American life. Marguerite Young’s method is poetic, imagistic, incantatory; in prose of extraordinary richness she tests the nature of her characters—and the nature of reality. Miss MacIntosh, My Darling is written with oceanic music moving at many levels of consciousness and perception; but the toughly fibred realistic fabric is always there, in the happenings of the narrative, the humor, the precise details, the definitions of the characters. Miss MacIntosh herself, who hails from What Cheer, Iowa, and seems downright and normal, with an incorruptible sense of humor and the desire to put an end to phantoms; Catherine Cartwheel, the opium lady, a recluse who is shut away in a great New England seaside house and entertains imaginary guests; Mr. Spitzer, the lawyer, musical composer and mystical space traveler, a gentle man, wholly unsure of himself and of reality; his twin brother Peron, the gay and raffish gambler and virtuoso in the world of sports; Cousin Hannah, the horsewoman, balloonist, mountain-climber and militant Boston feminist, known as Al Hamad through all the seraglios of the East; Titus Bonebreaker of Chicago, wild man of God dreaming of a heavenly crown; the very efficient Christian hangman, Mr. Weed of the Wabash River Valley; a featherweight champion who meets his equal in a graveyard—these are a few who live with phantasmagorical vividness in the pages of Miss MacIntosh, My Darling. The novel touches on many aspects of life—drug addiction, woman’s suffrage, murder, suicide, pregnancy both real and imaginary, schizophrenia, many strange loves, the psychology of gambling, perfectionism; but the profusion of this huge book serves always to intensify the force of the central question: “What shall we do when, fleeing from illusion, we are confronted by illusion?” What is real, what is dream? Is the calendar of the human heart the same as that kept by the earth? Is it possible that one may live a secondary life of which one does not know? In every aspect, Miss MacIntosh, My Darling stands by itself—in the lyric beauty of its prose, its imaginative vitality and cumulative emotional power. It is the work of a writer of genius.

Book Roses and Peonies Flower Poetics in Western and Eastern Translation

Download or read book Roses and Peonies Flower Poetics in Western and Eastern Translation written by Rosanna Masiola and published by Universitas Studiorum. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume explores how comparative thematics can be approached via translational issues to show how Western and Eastern literatures and traditions may be defined, in terms of imagery and contrastive botanical lexicography, from English and into English. Examples take into account several Western languages (French, Spanish, Italian), ancient languages (Greek, Latin, Hebrew) and Creoles. The choice of a common theme highlights how theological ascendancy through the rose mystique from the Bible may be juxtaposed to the harmony principle of the ‘queen peony’ in poems. In terms of thematics, the biblical ‘rose’ was a translational ‘fraud’ and did not exist as such in the Aramaic Song of Songs. In terms of context, Sino-English translators were of Jewish descent and translated during the years of Nazism. Leading Sinologists suffered purges and accusations in UK and US, Chinese translators were conversely expatriates or diasporic members of the community.
