Book excerpt: Tony Giodone made his living as an assassin--until one of his marks ripped his throat out and turned him into a werewolf. Now he's the best hired killer there is. When a curvy woman in an expensive suit tries to hire him to kill her, his wolf senses insist that she is his mate. One kidnapping, a plethora of gunfights, a psychic coma, and two faked deaths later, Tony and Sue have new identities and are hiding in a community of Sazi shapeshifters. To add to his problems, Tony is getting flashes of other peoples' lives. He doesn't know if they're memories or fantasies--but he wants it to stop, because he's learning things he shouldn't about his friends and neighbors. What's more dangerous than a psychic-powered werewolf assassin? Whatever it is, it's kidnapping and killing female Sazi . . . after it sucks out their powers. Its latest captive is the girlfriend of Carmine, the Mafia don who used to be Tony's boss. To get her back, Carmine will make war on all the Sazi--and while the Sazi would win, they can't afford to be exposed to humans. Now it's up to Tony to save Carmine's girlfriend--and all of the Sazi. Book The Big Splat or How Our Moon Came to Be

Download or read book The Big Splat or How Our Moon Came to Be written by Dana Mackenzie and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-05-02 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first popular book to explain the dramatic theory behind the Moon's genesis This lively science history relates one of the great recent breakthroughs in planetary astronomy-a successful theory of the birth of the Moon. Science journalist Dana Mackenzie traces the evolution of this theory, one little known outside the scientific community: a Mars-sized object collided with Earth some four billion years ago, and the remains of this colossal explosion-the Big Splat-came together to form the Moon. Beginning with notions of the Moon in ancient cosmologies, Mackenzie relates the fascinating history of lunar speculation, moving from Galileo and Kepler to George Darwin (son of Charles) and the Apollo astronauts, whose trips to the lunar surface helped solve one of the most enigmatic mysteries of the night sky: who hung the Moon? Dana Mackenzie (Santa Cruz, CA) is a freelance science journalist. His articles have appeared in such magazines as Science, Discover, American Scientist, The Sciences, and New Scientist.

Book Green Revolution

Download or read book Green Revolution written by Stanley A. Freed and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the mid-1960s, rural India passed through a period of rapid technological and social change known as the Green Revolution. It was the transition from basically subsistence peasant farming at a low technological level to expensive commercial farming with modern technology. Five major sociotechnological innovations were basic to the Green Revolution: the development of high-yielding varieties of food grains, especially wheat and rice; land consolidation; private tubewell irrigation; mechanization; and the use of factory fertilizers and pesticides. New sources of energy, electricity and the internal combustion engine, which replaced bullock power, and the financial infrastructure that enabled farmers to buy the new equipment--tractors, tubewells, and threshers--represented a fundamental change. If the Green Revolution is taken in its broadest sense to include much higher educational levels and new employment opportunities in modern occupations, then the economy of Shanti Nagar, whose principal component is still agriculture, has been transformed. This work is the 11th in a series of monographs, all published in the Anthropological Papers of the American Museum of Natural History, devoted to the description and analysis of life in Shanti Nagar (a pseudonym), a village in the Union Territory of Delhi. Our research is based on holistic fieldwork carried out in the village in 1957-1959 and 1977-1978, dates which make it possible to compare the village just before and after the Green Revolution. The most visible results of the Green Revolution were substantially increased production of the new high-yielding varieties of grain and increased prosperity for farmers, and indeed for almost all villagers. Because of the Green Revolution and associated developments in education and employment, the villagers of Shanti Nagar now lead a modern style of rural life supplemented by urban employment. These changes have also had the effect of enhancing equality, one of India's greatly desired social goals"--T.p. verso.
