Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring true story of how one special education teacher got his class to Space Camp—now a Hallmark Hall of Fame television event. “A heartening story, sure to inspire other teachers struggling with students who often seem beyond their reach.” —Teacher magazine Mike Kersjes always believed that his students could do anything—even attend the prestigious Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, where some of America’s best and brightest high school students compete in a variety of activities similar to those experienced by NASA astronauts training for shuttle missions. The challenge was convincing everyone else that the kids in his special education class, with disabilities including Tourette’s syndrome, Down’s Syndrome, dyslexia, eating disorders, and a variety of emotional problems, would benefit from the experience and succeed. With remarkable persistence, Kersjes broke down one barrier after another, from his own principal’s office to the inner sanctum of NASA, until Space Camp finally opened its doors. After nine months of rigorous preparation, Kersjes’s class arrived at Space Camp, where they turned in a performance beyond everyone’s expectations. “A testament to how perseverance can get results and how children can perform surprising feats in a system that doesn’t always work to help children.” —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “Kersjes’s refreshing, heart-warming account proves that faith and vision can yield great things.” —Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: Veteran space journalist digs into the science and technology--past, present, and future--central to our explorations of Earth's only satellite, the space destination most hotly pursued today. In these rich pages, veteran science journalist Leonard David explores the moon in all its facets, from ancient myth to future "Moon Village" plans. Illustrating his text with maps, graphics, and photographs, David offers inside information about how the United States, allies and competitors, as well as key private corporations like Moon Express and Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin, plan to reach, inhabit, and even harvest the moon in the decades to come. Spurred on by the Google Lunar XPRIZE--$20 million for the first to get to the moon and send images home--the 21st-century space race back to the moon has become more urgent, and more timely, than ever. Accounts of these new strategies are set against past efforts, including stories never before told about the Apollo missions and Cold War plans for military surveillance and missile launches from the moon. Timely and fascinating, this book sheds new light on our constant lunar companion, offering reasons to gaze up and see it in a different way than ever before.

Book excerpt: Big Bear is known throughout the southland of California as an outdoor recreational destination. Located high atop the San Bernardino Mountains, the area was once home to the Yuhaviatam Indians, the People of the Pines. In 1845, a party lead by Benjamin Davis Wilson, the grandfather of Gen. George S. Patton, entered the valley and discovered the area alive with grizzly bears, giving the valley its name. A dam, completed in 1884, created Big Bear Lake, which provided water to citrus growers in the area of Redlands and later lead to the water-related recreations, camps, resorts, and the welcoming community that Big Bear is famous for today.

The beloved characters developed in the original story evolve and begin an exciting new adventure as they defy monstrous, invading aliens dedicated to the total destruction of the Human Race. Amy is a self-aware female computer whose only connection to the outside world is through a telepathic link. Levi was a dying elderly Indian man who is rejuvenated through this telepathic connection with Amy. It is a story of this forced symbiotic relationship dictated by mutual needs for their survival in a world stripped of technology. Although they have separate and individual minds, they must co-exist in Levi's augmented body, sharing differing emotions and motivations, while simultaneously battling the enemy. Female brains and male brawn must unite as one in love and power to create a new entity to lead the fight against the aliens. They are aided in this war by human armies and rescued alien slaves, but they are still vastly outnumbered in this conflict. These affable aliens will touch your heart with their loyalty and action, while the enemy will rouse your rage and fear. This is truly a Good versus Evil tale, but does good always win? The male versus female conflict of minds, emotions and motivations remain a large portion of the story as it unfolds from both viewpoints. The struggle continues against formidable invaders led by an awe inspiring supreme leader. In this fast paced and compelling adventure, battles wage across the California and Arizona deserts. These unique characters, and the riveting story, are strong and their saga continues into the third book of this series Earth's Warriors.

Download or read book written by Gary W. Babb and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Earth is Ours." is a fresh and uniquely original story line that bridges many genres. It is a story of a symbiotic relationship between a self-aware female computer and an American Indian man dying of old age. This is a forced relationship dictated by mutual needs for survival in a world stripped of technology by aliens. The main characters begin the fight of their lives, but before they can fight the fierce aliens, Levi and Amy must fight for control of who they will be jointly. What begins as conflict of minds, develops into tolerance, then cooperation and finally love. This love of total oneness creates a unity of incredible power and strength that provides the means to fight the aliens. Female brains and male brawn unite to battle against incredible odds for the survival of the human race. The conflict of minds, action, adventure and suspense are all interlaced into a compelling and fast paced adventure. The characters are three dimensional with real emotions, not always perfect, but always interacting. The story is presented from differing viewpoints with the two main characters expressing some of the same events from both a male and female perspective. As they interface, the events are often seen from conflicting emotions and motivations; sometimes cynical and often humorous. It is the ultimate struggle of male versus female while combating monstrous aliens. As expected, this action story has a strong appeal to men, while the romance aspect compliments the story expanding the appeal to women. Additionally, one of the main characters is Amy, a particularly, brilliant and forceful female who demands attention from both sexes. Her male counterpart is very physical and masculine, representing everything Amy is not. Both characters and sexes are presented in a positive although conflicting way at times. These characters, and the story, are strong and their saga continues in its sequel "Target Earth."
Download or read book Citizens of Light written by Sam Shelstad and published by Brindle & Glass. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Sam Shelstad has a funny, lively, engaging, peculiar mind—charming and surprising.” —Sheila Heti, bestselling author of Motherhood and Pure Colour This debut novel set in southern Ontario captures call-centre life, faded tourist attractions, and suburbia with oddball wit and sharp realism. Colleen Weagle works in a call centre and lives in a bungalow with her mother in a quiet Toronto suburb. In her spare time she writes spec scripts for a CBC riding-school drama (her mother’s favourite) and plays an online game set in a resort populated by reindeer. It’s a typical life. Except three months ago Colleen’s husband Leonard—who led a similarly monotonous life—was found in a bog in the middle of the night, a two hours’ drive from home. Dead. With a flatly optimistic belief in the power of routine, Colleen has been soldiering on, trying not to think too hard about all the unknowns surrounding the death. But when a local news photo twigs Colleen’s memory of a mystery attendee at Leonard’s funeral she snaps into action. In the maddening company of her ornery co-worker Patti, she heads to Niagara Falls on a quest to find the truth behind the death. Amid the slot machines and grubby hotels, the pair stumble into the darker underworld of a faded tourist trap. What they find will lead straight to an episode from Colleen’s adolescence she thought she’d put firmly behind her. Bleakly madcap, with deadpan dialogue, Shelstad’s debut novel is a noir anti-thriller reminiscent of Twin Peaks and the work of Ottessa Moshfegh and early Kate Atkinson. He captures call-centre life, ramshackle tourist attractions, and suburbia with wit and sharp realism, and reveals the undercurrents of melancholy and the truly bizarre that can run beneath even the most seemingly mild-mannered lives.
