Download or read book Chartism written by Malcolm Chase and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chartism, the mass movement for democratic rights, dominated British domestic politics in the late 1830s and 1840s. It mobilised over three million supporters at its height. Few modern European social movements, certainly in Britain, have captured the attention of posterity to quite the extent it has done. Encompassing moments of great drama, it is one of the very rare points in British history where it is legitimate to speculate how close the country came to revolution. It is also pivotal to debates around continuity and change in Victorian Britain, gender, language and identity. Chartism: A New History is the only book to offer in-depth coverage of the entire chronological spread (1838-58) of this pivotal movement and to consider its rich and varied history in full. Based throughout on original research (including newly discovered material) this is a vivid and compelling narrative of a movement which mobilised three million people at its height. The author deftly intertwines analysis and narrative, interspersing his chapters with short ‘Chartist Lives’, relating the intimate and personal to the realm of the social and political. This book will become essential reading for anyone with an interest in early Victorian Britain, specialists, students and general readers alike.

Download or read book Role of Transportation in the Industrial Revolution written by Rick Szostak and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1991-06-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Szostak develops a model that establishes causal links between transportation and industrialization and shows how improvements in transportation could have a beneficial effect on an economy such as that of eighteenth-century England. This model shows the Industrial Revolution to involve four primary phenomena: increased regional specialization, the emergence of new industries, an expanding scale of production, and an accelerated rate of technological innovation. Through detailed analysis, Szostak explicates the effects of the different systems of transportation in France and England on the four components of the Industrial Revolution. He outlines the development in late eighteenth-century England of a reliable system of all-weather transportation, made up of turnpike roads and canals, that was far superior to the system in France at the same period. He goes on to examine in detail the iron, textile, and pottery industries in each country, focusing on the effect of the quality of available transportation on the decisions of individual entrepreneurs and innovators. Szostak shows that in every case these industries were more highly developed in England than in France.

Download or read book At the Bright Hem of God written by Peter J. Conradi and published by Seren Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the author's visit in 1965, this unique volume is written as a love letter to the mid-Wales county of Radnorshire. Within its autobiographical frame, this account covers the history and religious life of the area as reflected through its local writers and its adjacent townships, from 1176 to the present day. Exploring this fascinating location in detail, this investigation depicts its rural landscape as remote, wild, and renowned for shaping the lives of its inhabitants. Selecting key moments in its history--from the Middle Ages to the 21st century--this examination reviews the responses of writers as varied as Thomas Traherne, Bruce Chatwin, and Jean Jacques Rousseau. The result is a unique portrait of the county--what it is like to have lived there and to live there still--that captures the essence of a hidden part of Wales and Britain. Within this intriguing narrative, the various landscapes of borders--physical, emotional, and intellectual--from the author's own particular racial, religious, and spiritual identity are analyzed, forming a complementary exploration of the human condition.
