Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monumenta De Insula Manni , or a Collection of National Documents Relating to the Isle of Man, Vol. 2: Translated and Edited The muniments contained in the present volume form the civil and political history of the Isle of Man: and, though their use will be chiefly confined to the scholar and the antiquary, still the history of the people may be read by a reference to corres ponding parts of particular events. They embrace a period from 1134 to Henry the Fourth' s time, and will eventually be brought down to near the present epoch. When completed, it is hoped they will form the basis of an enlarged account Of the Island, the real history of which has yet to be written. Download or read book Monumenta De Insula Manni Vol 1 written by John Robert Oliver and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monumenta De Insula Manniae, Vol. 1: Or a Collection of National Documents Relating to the Isle of Man In these rolls is to be found a greater variety of information than in any other class of records. Chart Antiqu, or ancient charters, is a term applied to all deeds and writings from the Saxon period to the reign of Henry VIII. They consist principally of charters to abbeys and religious houses, grants to individuals, releases, quit-claims, manumissions, feoffments, and all sorts of contracts. These documents form the most important and valuable genealogical records we possess, for in them will be found some recital relating to parents, children, or collateral branches of a family either from the seal of arms, or the witnesses description. They are the most ancient of all the documents belonging to the Tower records, and extend from the time of Ethelbert king of Kent, at the close of the sixth century, to Henry III. inclusive. In the British Museum alone are 25,771 separate instruments, independent of those scattered throughout the various libraries of the kingdom. The last of the series with which we have to do, namely, Monastic Records, form our oldest and most valuable historic documents, and comprise the following works: - Chronicles, chartularies, leiger-books, registers, calendars, and necrologies. Every religious house kept one or more of these, and if of any extent or importance, the whole. Before the introduction of Christianity into Britain, it is evident no historic records of any kind existed, and that to the industry, skill, and perseverance of the monkish chroniclers of Britain, we owe all that is valuable of the early history of our nation. Excerpt: ...sixteen years and died in the island called Yle Isla. He left three sons, Lagman, Harald, and Olave. Lagman the eldest born receiving the kingdom, reigned seven years. His brother Harald continued long in rebellion against him. But at last he was taken by Lagman, who emasculated him, and put out his eyes. Lagman afterwards repenting of having deprived his brother of sight, spontaneously resigned the kingdom, and assuming the symbols of our Lord's crucifixion, set off for Jerusalem, where he died a short time after his arrival A.D. 1110. The chronology iu this port of tho MS. is very defective In the preceding entry it is stated that Godred Sytrig died the same year Malcolm Canmore devastated England, namely 1076. Between this event and tho conquest of Man by Godred Crovan, the chronicle makes an interval of five years to elapse, v. h ich brings ns down to 1081, a period much too grent for subsequent occurrences. The Norse Sagas affirm that Godred conquered the Isles 1077, which is probably the truo date; for we have it on record that Magnus Nudipes' first expedition to Scotland took place 1093, during which he ejpelled Anno /CCISUS est MLXXIII. Download or read book The Kingdom of the Isles written by R. Andrew McDonald and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the history of the western seaboard of Scotland (the Hebrides, Argyll and the Isle of Man) in a formative but often neglected era: the central middle ages, from the mightly Somerled to his descendant John MacDonald, the first Lord of the Isles (c. 1336). Drawing on a variety of sources, this very readable narrative deals with three major and closely interrelated themes: first, the existence of the Isles and coastal mainland as a kingdom from c.1100 to 1266; second, the rulers of the region, Somerled and his descendants, the MacDougalls, MacDonalds and MacRuaris; and third, the often complex relations among the Isles, Scotland, Norway and England. A fully rounded history emerges, which transcends national viewpoints. While political history predominates, the changing nature of society in the isles is emphasised throughout, and separate chapters address the church and monasticism as well as the monuments – the castles, monasteries, churches and chapels that form an enduring legacy.
