Book Monumenta De Insula Manni Vol 1

Download or read book Monumenta De Insula Manni Vol 1 written by John Robert Oliver and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monumenta De Insula Manniae, Vol. 1: Or a Collection of National Documents Relating to the Isle of Man In these rolls is to be found a greater variety of information than in any other class of records. Chart Antiqu, or ancient charters, is a term applied to all deeds and writings from the Saxon period to the reign of Henry VIII. They consist principally of charters to abbeys and religious houses, grants to individuals, releases, quit-claims, manumissions, feoffments, and all sorts of contracts. These documents form the most important and valuable genealogical records we possess, for in them will be found some recital relating to parents, children, or collateral branches of a family either from the seal of arms, or the witnesses description. They are the most ancient of all the documents belonging to the Tower records, and extend from the time of Ethelbert king of Kent, at the close of the sixth century, to Henry III. inclusive. In the British Museum alone are 25,771 separate instruments, independent of those scattered throughout the various libraries of the kingdom. The last of the series with which we have to do, namely, Monastic Records, form our oldest and most valuable historic documents, and comprise the following works: - Chronicles, chartularies, leiger-books, registers, calendars, and necrologies. Every religious house kept one or more of these, and if of any extent or importance, the whole. Before the introduction of Christianity into Britain, it is evident no historic records of any kind existed, and that to the industry, skill, and perseverance of the monkish chroniclers of Britain, we owe all that is valuable of the early history of our nation. His brother Harald continued long in rebellion against him. But at last he was taken by Lagman, who emasculated him, and put out his eyes. Lagman afterwards repenting of having deprived his brother of sight, spontaneously resigned the kingdom, and assuming the symbols of our Lord's crucifixion, set off for Jerusalem, where he died a short time after his arrival A.D. 1110. The chronology iu this port of tho MS. is very defective In the preceding entry it is stated that Godred Sytrig died the same year Malcolm Canmore devastated England, namely 1076. Between this event and tho conquest of Man by Godred Crovan, the chronicle makes an interval of five years to elapse, v. h ich brings ns down to 1081, a period much too grent for subsequent occurrences. The Norse Sagas affirm that Godred conquered the Isles 1077, which is probably the truo date; for we have it on record that Magnus Nudipes' first expedition to Scotland took place 1093, during which he ejpelled Anno /CCISUS est MLXXIII. Download or read book The Art of Falconry written by Frederick II of Hohenstaufen and published by . This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first written in Latin in 1241 by Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, Holy Roman Emperor (1196-1250). It was first published as a two volume work by his son Manfred. The original is in the Vatican. Next it was published in French in 1300 in six volumes by Jean II of Dampierre. The six volume work was translated into English and combined into one book in 1931 by Dr. Casey Albert Wood (1856-1942), a Canadian ophthalmologist specializing in the eyes of birds, and F. Marjorie Fyfe. The illustrations in this book were obtained in the Vatican Library during the years that Dr. Wood was studying there. Falcons have the best eyesight of any creature known to exist. It has long been recognized that birds of this type have exceptional ability in eyesight. We even have the expression "Eagle-eyed," meaning a person who is alert and can see well. Second is that they are the fastest creature known to exist. Consider the fact that Falcons fly high in the sky, thousands of feet up, yet they can spot a mouse on the ground and dive down to catch him. Dr. Casey Wood was studying falcons to find out why they are able to see so much better than we humans can. One of the very few rare copies of this book known to exist are in the Vatican Library in Vatican City, where he was studying.

Book Writing Beyond Pen and Parchment

Download or read book Writing Beyond Pen and Parchment written by Ricarda Wagner and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can stories of magical engraved rings or prophetic inscriptions on walls tell us about how writing was perceived before print transformed the world? Writing beyond Pen and Parchment introduces readers to a Middle Ages where writing is not confined to manuscripts but is inscribed in the broader material world, in textiles and tombs, on weapons or human skin. Drawing on the work done at the Collaborative Research Centre “Material Text Cultures,” (SFB 933) this volume presents a comparative overview of how and where text-bearing artefacts appear in medieval German, Old Norse, British, French, Italian and Iberian literary traditions, and also traces the paths inscribed objects chart across multiple linguistic and cultural traditions. The volume’s focus on the raw materials and practices that shaped artefacts both mundane or fantastical in medieval narratives offers a fresh perspective on the medieval world that takes seriously the vibrancy of matter as a vital aspect of textual culture often overlooked.

Book Civic Monuments and the Augustales in Roman Italy

Download or read book Civic Monuments and the Augustales in Roman Italy written by Margaret L. Laird and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combination of portrait statue, monumental support, and public lettering was considered emblematic of Roman public space even in antiquity. This book examines ancient Roman statues and their bases, tombs, dedicatory altars, and panels commemorating gifts of civic beneficence made by the Augustales, civic groups composed primarily of wealthy ex-slaves. Margaret L. Laird examines how these monuments functioned as protagonists in their built and social environments by focusing on archaeologically attested commissions made by the Augustales in Roman Italian towns. Integrating methodologies from art history, architectural history, social history, and epigraphy with archaeological and sociological theories of community, she considers how dedications and their accompanying inscriptions created webs of association and transformed places of display into sites of local history. Understanding how these objects functioned in ancient cities, the book argues, illuminates how ordinary Romans combined public lettering, honorific portraits, emperor worship, and civic philanthropy to express their communal identities.
