He's yet another masterful younger writer coming through... Wonderful’ - Sebastian Barry Her house is on Montpelier Parade – just across town, but it might as well be a different world. Vera is older, wealthier, sophisticated, but chance meetings quickly become shy arrangements, and soon Sonny is in love for the first time. Book Firsts and Lasts

Download or read book Firsts and Lasts written by Leda Schubert and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2022-03 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With evocative words and glorious cut-paper collages, this celebration of the transitions between seasons summons the first—and last—signals of the seasonal cycle. What is the first sign of spring? And what is the last glimpse of winter? The joy of the changing seasons means saying hello to new but familiar rituals, like spring picnics in the park or homemade lemonade in summer. But there’s also the bittersweet feeling of doing something for the last time, like mowing the lawn one final time on a brown day in autumn, or watching the last of the geese fly south in the early weeks of winter. Whichever way you mark the changing of the seasons, every year feels like an extraordinary miracle! In this jubilant ode to seasonal rituals, Leda Schubert evokes the familiar, enchanting rhythm of the four seasons, while Clover Robin’s bold collages bring warmth and magic to everyday occurrences.

Book Repeopling Vermont

Download or read book Repeopling Vermont written by Paul M. Searls and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Repeopling Vermont: The Paradox of Development in the Twentieth Century, by historian Paul Searls, traces two distinct but interrelated stories to illuminate the fundamental contradictions and ironies that defined Vermont in the twentieth century. One is the story of a group of Swedish immigrants who settled in and around Landgrove in the 1890s and their descendants. The other is the story of Samuel R. Ogden, who beginning in 1929 purchased most of the buildings in the main village of Landgrove and set out to revitalize the town. Ogden succeeded in that project and subsequently became an important public servant to Vermont; he was instrumental in the growth of the ski industry, and was a founder of both Vermont Life magazine and the Vermont Natural Resources Council. These intertwined stories reveal the central paradox of Vermont in the twentieth century. The state's leaders simultaneously saw Vermont's overwhelmingly rural character as both a distressing problem in need of a solution, and the state's greatest asset. But their efforts to preserve Vermont's precious rural heritage, it's human and physical landscapes, while at the same time improving the state, also put that same way of life in peril. Those developments continue to reverberate throughout Vermont in the twenty-first century, shaping the experience of everyone who lives in or visits the Green Mountain State today"--

Book excerpt: Experience Civil War historic sites and small towns that can be found nowhere else in America Today, throughout Vermont, it is possible to identify hundreds and hundreds of Civil War–related sites. Throughout Vermont are soldier homes, halls where war meetings encouraged enlistments, churches where soldier funerals were held and abolitionists spoke, monuments to those who served, hospital sites, and homes where women gathered to make items for the soldiers. The Vermont State House is a virtual Civil War museum. A building survives in Woodstock where the war was administered. Cemeteries hold the gravestones of many of the 34,000 who fought. A field even exists where in 1803 a Quaker preacher heard a voice from above fortell a bloody war over slavery. With the help of this book, Civil War sites can be located as in no other state, taking the reader through the beautiful Vermont landscape of hill farms and small towns that looks more like the Civil War era than that of any other state.

Book excerpt: By the late 20th century, Montpelier, the home of James and Dolley Madison, had been altered until it would no longer have been recognizable to the couple. In 2000 the newly-created Montpelier Foundation took over management of the historic home with the seemingly insurmountable task of restoring it to be a visual record of the Madisons' era. Within ten years, the Foundation overcame numerous hurdles, turning Montpelier into a monument to the Father of the Constitution. Over the next decade the site also became a monument to Montpelier's enslaved. The buildings in their community next to the Madisons' home were reconstructed, and award-winning exhibits dramatically illustrate the tragedy of slavery and essential role of enslaved people in Madison's life. Foundation co-founder William H. Lewis details the nonprofit's ambitious preservation projects and remarkable achievements.

And it didn't take long for Montpelier to make a name for itself--its location created a prime manufacturing hub, and the Vermont Central Railroad made travel convenient. The city also became the scene of the fire of 1875 and the Gould-Caswell murder. Join local historian Paul Heller as he compiles significant moments of Montpelier's past.
