Book excerpt: In the fall of 2010, the Turner kids ventured to follow Simmie Turner's trail through Alaska by sea, railroad, and highway. It was a great journey where the scenery remains unchanged since the days of the greatest generation who built the ALCAN highway. Simmie's story was added to the tales of adventure told along the goldrush trail. We hope everyone who reads the book can make the trip to Alaska. It is mythical country. Nothing like it anywhere else. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, the Sovereign Lord says. Coming of age through suffering in the Great Depression, a wild mountain boy meets a serious young widow. They start a new family only to be separated by World War II. Like a williwaw squall that sweeps the Aleutian islands, the war uproots young dreams, detours voyages, and hides enemy forces. Are Helens prayers a match for the call of the wild when Sim crosses paths with men who find adventure and fortune with international construction companies? Is psychology or theology a better explanatory frame for the question Robert Frost posed in The Road Not Taken?

This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . The Battle on River Raisin, which was fought in and around Frenchtown (now Monroe), Michigan from January 18 to January 23, 1812, was one of the four principal campaigns of the War of 1812 engaged in by Kentucky forces. Following the massacre of American forces at Frenchtown--including as many as sixty Kentucky soldiers-- Kentucky, patriots exhorted one another with shouts of "Remember the Raisin," which gave the new nation the "vengeance-fired impetus" to wage the remaining battles of the War of 1812. The larger of these two works treats all aspects of the Battle on River Raisin and features detailed biographical and genealogical sketches of nearly 100 officers and enlisted men who served on River Raisin and complete rosters of the Kentucky soldiers who saw action there. The smaller companion volume is a miscellaneous listing of Kentucky veterans of the War of 1812 compiled from newspaper files, pension lists, county histories, veterans' publications, and so on.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bordered by the Oconee River on the west and the Altamaha River on the south, formed where the Ocmulgee and Oconee Rivers collide head-on at the forks, Montgomery County's rolling pine barrens are dotted with rustic pioneer log cabins, stately antebellum clapboard houses, and elegant Victorian homes. The county's access to the Oconee and Altamaha Rivers provided early settlers with vital transportation and commercial links to the outside world. On their way to markets in Savannah and Darien, men rafting down these rivers on huge logs cut from the dense pine forests were a common scene of the 1800s; steamboats and ferries were also used for the transport of people and goods. The breathtaking beauty of the winding Old River Road along the western edge of Montgomery County provides a glimpse of long ago as one passes old homesteads and majestic cemetery monuments. Historic scenes from the once-bustling villages of Montgomery County are contained in these pages. Country churches, schools, and agrarian scenes are also portrayed.
