Download or read book Suburb written by Royce Hanson and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land-use policy is at the center of suburban political economies because everything has to happen somewhere but nothing happens by itself. In Suburb, Royce Hanson explores how well a century of strategic land-use decisions served the public interest in Montgomery County, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C. Transformed from a rural hinterland into the home a million people and a half-million jobs, Montgomery County built a national reputation for innovation in land use policy—including inclusive zoning, linking zoning to master plans, preservation of farmland and open space, growth management, and transit-oriented development.A pervasive theme of Suburb involves the struggle for influence over land use policy between two virtual suburban republics. Developers, their business allies, and sympathetic officials sought a virtuous cycle of market-guided growth in which land was a commodity and residents were customers who voted with their feet. Homeowners, environmentalists, and their allies saw themselves as citizens and stakeholders with moral claims on the way development occurred and made their wishes known at the ballot box. In a book that will be of particular interest to planning practitioners, attorneys, builders, and civic activists, Hanson evaluates how well the development pattern produced by decades of planning decisions served the public interest.
Download or read book A Citizen s Perspective written by Paul Schwartz and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of my columns for the Montgomery County Sentinel during the period leading up to and including the 2016 election season. These weekly columns for the Sentinel, which began in February of 2015, comprise the content of this book. The topics are topics that captured the attention of the members of our society. As such, these columns represent a snapshot of the issues we have faced and my analysis of them. I have categorized the columns under six themes relating to societal challenges, such as those that we experienced somewhat recently in Baltimore and Charleston; needed steps to improve our communities, such as our failing infrastructure; today's political landscape, including voter identification to fix a nonexistent problem; the impact of Supreme Court rulings; campaigns and candidate interviews; and the economy, which includes the ever-shrinking middle class and its relation to the Reagan cure-all--trickle-down economics. More than anything, these columns are intended to capture the hypocrisy rampant throughout today's society. As you will see as you read these columns in order from earlier to later, some prognostication was a bit more accurate than others. Please consider the time frame within which each column was written as you read them. While the columns cover more than just what has turned out to be a presidential election like no other before it, it is the 2016 election that is the main focus of this book. However, it was always my intention in writing these columns to capture the many challenges we face as a society, provide you with my own personal perspective on those challenges, and motivate the reader to consider widening his or her own perspectives on the various issues reflected in the columns. I will leave it to the reader to determine if I succeeded.
Download or read book Childhood Stories and Perspectives written by William L. Alston and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter and Julia Alston were two parents with two different upbringings—one was from a family of means, and the other was from a family with very little. One was about trying to have success and wealth, and the other was about having nothing, spending and splurging and wasting more than could be grasped. Both Walter and his spouse, Julia, had major flaws. Both were all about him and herself. They had no plans to effectively share between themselves or among their ten children. They were all in it for themselves and not for each other and certainly not for their offspring. Despite their selfishness, they left their children with more than they realized; they left their children a treasure trove of stories—stories that were handed down through several generations from their parents and their parents’ parents. For generations, this had transpired by word of mouth that revealed family history, culture, entertainment, and family accomplishments. These stories brought pride, pleasure, and a sense of direction and well-being to the Alston family. These stories brought assured tangibles that would encourage, empower, teach, and would point the way forward.

Download or read book New Perspectives on Agri environmental Policies written by Stephan J Goetz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant advances have occurred in recent years in Europe and in North America in addressing agri-environmental policies. Land use issues tend to be more pressing in Europe than in the US as a whole because of different spatial exigencies. Because these advances have taken place within individual academic disciplines, there has been something of a loss of synergy and often efforts are duplicated. While important institutional and legal differences still exist between the two continents, the sharing of recent scientific advances will benefit scientists on both sides of the Atlantic and this is the main purpose of this book. The authors aim to identify options for policy to overcome the challenges ahead, synthesize existing knowledge, and identify gaps in current knowledge. This is aided by the adoption of a properly comparative approach.

Scholars will find the book useful as a reference tool explaining how rules-based fiscal policy is used to address debt fatigue and unsustainable spending growth. Legislators and practitioners will find the book useful as a reference source in designing and simulating second generation fiscal rules, and educators will find the book helpful for its close analysis of policies in representative states such as Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Nebraska, and California.
Download or read book American Perspectives on Learning Communities and Opportunities in the Maker Movement written by Barker, Bradley S. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The maker movement culture emphasizes informal, peer-led, and shared learning, while driving innovation. Even though some experts view the maker movement as a move backward to pre-industrial revolution manufacturing, the purpose of making is not to have an abundance of tools in one space; rather, it is about helping participants create personally meaningful projects with the help of mentors, experts, and peers in ad-hoc learning communities. American Perspectives on Learning Communities and Opportunities in the Maker Movement is an essential reference source that discusses the maker movement in the United States, artisanal perspectives, and the learning-through-doing perspective. Featuring research on topics such as educational spaces, management, creativity labs, makerspaces, and operating procedures, this book is ideally designed for entrepreneurs, artisans, academicians, researchers, manufacturing professionals, and students.
