Book Monte Carlo Study of Ion Chamber Response in Low Energy Photon Beams

Download or read book Monte Carlo Study of Ion Chamber Response in Low Energy Photon Beams written by Fadi Hobeila and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "192Ir is one of the most popular radiation sources used for brachytherapy treatments. However, 192Ir emits a wide photon spectrum (10 keV to 900 keV) which impedes the creation of an 192Ir primary standard. The 192Ir air kerma calibration factor is derived by interpolating between 60Co, 137Cs and hard orthovoltage air kerma calibration factors obtained from a standards laboratory. The EGSnrc Monte Carlo package was used to calculate the response in low energy photon beams of a commercial parallel-plate chamber to assess useability as a 192Ir and kilovoltage photon beam calibration tool. XCOM photoeffect cross-sections were implemented in EGSnrc to improve kerma calculation agreement at low energies. The response calculations were compared to experimental data from PTB (Germany). Overall, agreement between calculations and measurement is good and represents an improvement to results from the literature. However, discrepancies exist at the lowest energies which may be caused by differences in the measurement and calculation geometries." --

Book Development and Evaluation of a Monte Carlo Code System for Analysis of Ionization Chamber Responses

Download or read book Development and Evaluation of a Monte Carlo Code System for Analysis of Ionization Chamber Responses written by Jeffrey Oscar Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is the development and testing of a Monte Carlo code system for calculating the response of an ionization chamber to a mixed neutron and photon radiation environment. The resulting code system entitled MICAP - a Monte Carlo Ionization Chamber Analysis Package - determines the neutron, photon, and total responses of the ionization chamber to the mixed field radiation environment. The Monte Carlo method performs accurate simulations of the physical processes involved in detecting radiation using ionization chambers, and eliminates limitations inherent in approximate methods. To evaluate MICAP, comparisons were made with results obtained using other code systems and with experimental results. Separate comparisons with other code systems verified the validity of the neutron, photon, and charged particle transport processes and the nuclear models used to describe the individual neutron reactions, respectively. Comparisons with mono-energetic photon calibration experiments and with mixed neutron and photon radiation experiments verified the applicability of MICAP for analyzing the response of ionization chambers to mixed field radiation environments.

Book Monte Carlo Transport of Electrons and Photons

Download or read book Monte Carlo Transport of Electrons and Photons written by T.M. Jenkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For ten days at the end of September, 1987, a group of about 75 scientists from 21 different countries gathered in a restored monastery on a 750 meter high piece of rock jutting out of the Mediterranean Sea to discuss the simulation of the transport of electrons and photons using Monte Carlo techniques. When we first had the idea for this meeting, Ralph Nelson, who had organized a previous course at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture, suggested that Erice would be the ideal place for such a meeting. Nahum, Nelson and Rogers became Co-Directors of the Course, with the help of Alessandro Rindi, the Director of the School of Radiation Damage and Protection, and Professor Antonino Zichichi, Director of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre. The course was an outstanding success, both scientifically and socially, and those at the meeting will carry the marks of having attended, both intellectually and on a personal level where many friendships were made. The scientific content of the course was at a very high caliber, both because of the hard work done by all the lecturers in preparing their lectures (e. g. , complete copies of each lecture were available at the beginning of the course) and because of the high quality of the "students", many of whom were accomplished experts in the field. The outstanding facilities of the Centre contributed greatly to the success. This volume contains the formal record of the course lectures.

Book Airport Passenger Screening Using Backscatter X Ray Machines

Download or read book Airport Passenger Screening Using Backscatter X Ray Machines written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-01-10 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passenger screening at commercial airports in the United States has gone through significant changes since the events of September 11, 2001. In response to increased concern over terrorist attacks on aircrafts, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has deployed security systems of advanced imaging technology (AIT) to screen passengers at airports. To date (December 2014), TSA has deployed AITs in U.S. airports of two different technologies that use different types of radiation to detect threats: millimeter wave and X-ray backscatter AIT systems. X-ray backscatter AITs were deployed in U.S. airports in 2008 and subsequently removed from all airports by June 2013 due to privacy concerns. TSA is looking to deploy a second-generation X-ray backscatter AIT equipped with privacy software to eliminate production of an image of the person being screened in order to alleviate these concerns. This report reviews previous studies as well as current processes used by the Department of Homeland Security and equipment manufacturers to estimate radiation exposures resulting from backscatter X-ray advanced imaging technology system use in screening air travelers. Airport Passenger Screening Using Backscatter X-Ray Machines examines whether exposures comply with applicable health and safety standards for public and occupational exposures to ionizing radiation and whether system design, operating procedures, and maintenance procedures are appropriate to prevent over exposures of travelers and operators to ionizing radiation. This study aims to address concerns about exposure to radiation from X-ray backscatter AITs raised by Congress, individuals within the scientific community, and others.

Download or read book Proton Therapy Physics written by Harald Paganetti and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proton Therapy Physics goes beyond current books on proton therapy to provide an in-depth overview of the physics aspects of this radiation therapy modality, eliminating the need to dig through information scattered in the medical physics literature. After tracing the history of proton therapy, the book summarizes the atomic and nuclear physics background necessary for understanding proton interactions with tissue. It describes the physics of proton accelerators, the parameters of clinical proton beams, and the mechanisms to generate a conformal dose distribution in a patient. The text then covers detector systems and measuring techniques for reference dosimetry, outlines basic quality assurance and commissioning guidelines, and gives examples of Monte Carlo simulations in proton therapy. The book moves on to discussions of treatment planning for single- and multiple-field uniform doses, dose calculation concepts and algorithms, and precision and uncertainties for nonmoving and moving targets. It also examines computerized treatment plan optimization, methods for in vivo dose or beam range verification, the safety of patients and operating personnel, and the biological implications of using protons from a physics perspective. The final chapter illustrates the use of risk models for common tissue complications in treatment optimization. Along with exploring quality assurance issues and biological considerations, this practical guide collects the latest clinical studies on the use of protons in treatment planning and radiation monitoring. Suitable for both newcomers in medical physics and more seasoned specialists in radiation oncology, the book helps readers understand the uncertainties and limitations of precisely shaped dose distribution.
