Book excerpt: This book describes the Proceedings of the International Conference on Nuclear Data for Science and Technology held at Jillich in May 1991. The conference was in a series of application oriented nuclear data conferences organized in the past under the auspices of the Nuclear Energy Agency-Nuclear Data Committee (NEANDC) and with the support of the Nuclear Energy Agency-Committee on Reactor Physics (NEACRP). It was the fIrst international conference on nuclear data held in Germany, with the scientific responsibility entrusted to the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry of the Research Centre Jillich. The scientific programme was established by the International Programme Committee in consultation with the International Advisers, and the NEA and IAEA cooperated in the organization. A total of 328 persons from 37 countries and fIve international organizations participated. The scope of these Proceedings extends to a wide range of interdisciplinary topics dealing with measu rement, calculation, evaluation and application of nuclear data, with a major emphasis on numerical data. Both energy and non-energy related applications are considered and due attention is given to some fundamental aspects relevant to the understanding of nuclear data.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Safety Guide provides recommendations and guidance on a general framework for performing prospective radiological impact assessments for facilities and activities, to estimate and control the radiological effects on the public and on the environment. This radiological environmental impact assessment is intended for planned exposure situations as part of the authorization process and, when applicable, as part of a governmental decision making process for facilities and activities. The situations covered in the assessment include both exposures expected to occur in normal operation as well as potential exposures. The assessment of the radiological impacts includes consideration of the risk of radiation effects for humans and for populations of non-human biota. Guidance is provided on the assumptions and input data to be used, the necessary models for environmental transfer and radiation dose assessment and the definition and use of criteria for informing decisions.

Book Monte Carlo Calculations of the Penetration of Normally Incident Neutron Beams Through Concrete

Download or read book Monte Carlo Calculations of the Penetration of Normally Incident Neutron Beams Through Concrete written by F. H. Clark and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 05R Monte Carlo code (See ORNL-3622, NASA N65-17892) was adapted to calculate fast-neutron doses within and outside of concrete slab shields. Such calculations were performed for a variety of shield thicknesses (0 to 180 cm) and for various monoenergetic sources from 0.7 to 14 MeV. The concrete chosen is ordinary concrete with approximately 6% water content. Results are plotted as tissue kerma versus penetration distance for each source energy. The source is in each case a broad normally incident beam. (Author).

Book Monte Carlo N Particle Simulations for Nuclear Detection and Safeguards

Download or read book Monte Carlo N Particle Simulations for Nuclear Detection and Safeguards written by John S. Hendricks and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is a pedagogical, examples-based guide to using the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP®) code for nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation applications. The MCNP code, general-purpose software for particle transport simulations, is widely used in the field of nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation for numerous applications including detector design and calibration, and the study of scenarios such as measurement of fresh and spent fuel. This book fills a gap in the existing MCNP software literature by teaching MCNP software usage through detailed examples that were selected based on both student feedback and the real-world experience of the nuclear safeguards group at Los Alamos National Laboratory. MCNP input and output files are explained, and the technical details used in MCNP input file preparation are linked to the MCNP code manual. Benefiting from the authors’ decades of experience in MCNP simulation, this book is essential reading for students, academic researchers, and practitioners whose work in nuclear physics or nuclear engineering is related to non-proliferation or nuclear safeguards. Each chapter comes with downloadable input files for the user to easily reproduce the examples in the text.

Book Results of the Analysis by Monte Carlo of Fast neutron Shielding Properties of Compound Cubical and Spherical Shields

Download or read book Results of the Analysis by Monte Carlo of Fast neutron Shielding Properties of Compound Cubical and Spherical Shields written by F. H. Clark and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive program of calculations was performed to check certain fast-neutron dose-rate measurements made at Project BREN in 1962. The response characteristic of the modified long counter was computed. Nitrogen and oxygen cross sections were reviewed and used in calculations of the transport in air of neutrons from a Godiva source to a distance of 66 g/sq cm. Transport results obtained by Monte Carlo were compared with those obtained by the moments method. A spectrum at an 80-g/sq cm penetration was determined. The perturbating effect of a structure on the neutron field in its neighborhood was estimated. The effect of variations of the spectrum with penetration distances on doses computed with different weight functions was also examined; the Snyder-Neufeld multicollision physical dose was found to vary with distance in a way markedly different from others examined. Work was also done on importance sampling techniques, especially the exponential transform, and the sampling problem was formulated in a simplified, approximate expression to facilitate statistical interpretations. Finally, a number of shield penetration calculations were performed to compare with the measurements and to determine the effects of shield shape, shield cavity size, and source angular distributions incident on the shields. The agreement between the calculations and the measurements was within the uncertainty in the detector response characteristic. (Author).

Download or read book A Monte Carlo Primer written by Stephen A. Dupree and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-07 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematical technique of Monte Carlo, as applied to the transport of sub-atomic particles, has been described in numerous reports and books since its formal development in the 1940s. Most of these instructional efforts have been directed either at the mathematical basis of the technique or at its practical application as embodied in the several large, formal computer codes available for performing Monte Carlo transport calculations. This book attempts to fill what appears to be a gap in this Monte Carlo literature between the mathematics and the software. Thus, while the mathematical basis for Monte Carlo transport is covered in some detail, emphasis is placed on the application of the technique to the solution of practical radiation transport problems. This is done by using the PC as the basic teaching tool. This book assumes the reader has a knowledge of integral calculus, neutron transport theory, and Fortran programming. It also assumes the reader has available a PC with a Fortran compiler. Any PC of reasonable size should be adequate to reproduce the examples or solve the exercises contained herein. The authors believe it is important for the reader to execute these examples and exercises, and by doing so to become accomplished at preparing appropriate software for solving radiation transport problems using Monte Carlo. The step from the software described in this book to the use of production Monte Carlo codes should be straightforward.
