Scattered localized infestations of range and crop grass hoppers did occur so that some economic damage was experienced in nearly every county. Grasshopper control is now the complete responsibility of individual land owners except in cases where public domain is involved. Therefore, more intensive educational programs were conducted. A total of 53 educational meetings were undertaken which were attended by people. In addition, educational programs were carried out through newspapers, radio, and bulletins. It is estimated that acres of cropland and acres of rangeland were treated for grasshopper control during this year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Insects Pests, 1947 and 1948: Thirty-Second Report of the State Entomologist The entomological outlook for Montana presents a number of ramifications which have not been previously stressed. Our insect problems have increased in the last decade and the possibility of further. Serious situations arising is almost certain. During the last few years, we have had infestations of a number of insects new to the state. Likewise, some native insects that have not previously been pests have caused considerable damage to agricultural crops. It had been predicted by earlier workers that two of these new insects, the alfalfa weevil and the differential grasshopper, could not become established in Montana because of our ecological conditions. At the present time both of these insects have become serious pests. The differential grasshopper was first found in Dawson County in 1932. Since that time it has spread over much of the eastern and southern parts of Montana and is now found in economically important numbers as far west as Yellow stone and Big Horn counties. The alfalfa weevil was first 'observed in 1938 and has been a serious pest to alfalfa in Southeastern Montana since 1945. It has spread every year and at the present time it is as far north and east as Terry and as far west as Reed Point. This pest has become so serious in some sections that it has threatened the alfalfa seed and feed growing industries. It was assumed by many of the early workers that climatic factors were primarily responsible for limiting the distribution of many of these pests. It is apparent from the above examples that the ability of an insect to adapt itself cannot be overlooked in predicting the limits of its geographic distribution. The wheat stem sawfly, which is a native insect of Montana, did not become important economically until 1941. Since that time this insect has become one of our most serious pests of spring and winter wheat, at present confining itself largely to the northern part of the state. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Insect Pests, 1941 and 1942: Twenty-Ninth Report of the State Entomologist; December, 1942 The insect pests which plague the rancher and farmer in Mon tana present an ever-changing picture. This is true for at least two reasons. First, the pests of importance are likely to change from year to year, the dry years having their more or less typical com plex of injurious forms, and the wet years reducing some of them and making conditions favorable for a new group; further, new pests are appearing in the State bringing with them new problems. Second, in the light of new research findings better control meth ods are being developed, both in Montana and outside of the State, which necessitate the constant inspection and revision of the ap proved methods of control. The control of grasshoppers and Mor mon crickets is a good example of this. The last decade has seen many advances in our methods of attacking these problems. Sur vey methods have been developed and refined, bait formulae have been improved and reduced in cost, and the mechanics of mixing and spreading baits have taken great strides forward, largely through the efforts of the United States Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine. The main efforts of this office have been directed toward the control of the major pests, either through the administration of field control campaigns, or through the preparation of circulars describing approved methods of insect control. More than 300 inquiries on the control of a great variety of harmful animals are received and answered annually. During the past year 44 single-page pamphlets, many of them illustrated, were prepared by this office and published by the Montana Extension Service. These circulars, Series A, Nos. 1 to 44, are available from County Agents or from the Montana Ex tension Service, -bozeman, Montana. Over a period of years the involved states in cooperation with the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine have developed a good organization for the large-scale control of regional insects of migratory habits. Control operations in Montana, under the joint direction of the State Entomologist's Office and this Bureau. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Insect Pests for 1933 and 1934: The Twenty-Fifth Report of the State Entomologist of Montana The conference believes, and strongly recommends, that an extensive control program, interstate in character, be inaugurated at once. It is absolutely necessary that a comprehensive campaign be immediately developed in order to save a large part of the 1934 crop. The grasshopper control program should he so organized that it deals with the present emergency and it should also be permanent in character in order to prevent recurrence of the present situation.
