Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report of the Montana Fish and Game Commission: May 1, 1960 April 30, 1962 In order to better fish and game administration, Montana has been divided geographically into seven administrative districts. Each district includes a fish and game headquarters that provides storage and office space. The head quarters are focal points for operations within the respective districts. Under the district system public service is improved while at the same time field travel is minimized. Supervisory personnel within the districts are directly responsible to their division chiefs in Helena. The supervisory personnel also operate as a staff on the district basis. This staff reports to the fish and game director through an appointed chairman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report of the Montana Fish and Game Commission: May 1, 1958 April 30, 1960 Because of the complex unity of animals, plants, soils, and waters. It is impossible to manage wildlife without becoming involved in the affairs of other resources. It is impossible for any one person to gain in a lifetime a mastery of all resource information. Further, the ability to manage nature's products is not inherent, but comes only after years of study and experience. This points out the critical need for well trained men to direct and control the use of such a valuable heritage. It is common knowledge that the proper use and control of te sources involves in a great part the management of people. Any pro gram that does not have public support is doomed to eventual failure. Sentiment, prejudice, and desires for personal gains are human traits that must be understood and overcome. Consequently, an intensive and well rounded program of public information and education is a must in Fish and Game activities. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Fish and Game Commission Biennial Report, 1935-1936 The Fish and Game Commission is not unmindful of its responsibilities to secure to this and future generations an economic and recreational resource of no small moment. This report will carry a full and detailed account of the activities, finances, programs and recommendations which it is hoped will be of some value in emphasizing the enormity of the task, the responsibilities of all interested in Montana's welfare and the benefits which will accrue with realization and accomplishments of the wildlife program. In order to properly administer the affairs of the Department, the Com mission this year set up five divisions - Administrative, Fisheries, Game Farm, Game Bird and Animal and Enforcement. A budget was made with every consideration given to the importance and duties of each unit. This, it is expected will make for better operation and properly protect the development of one phase of the program at the possible expense of another - the interests of the angler, bird hunter and big game hunter developed on an even keel. Following is a review of the activities of each division during the biennial period, with the recommendations to be treated collectively in a separate report to permit more comprehensive appreciation of their needs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Fish and Game Commission Biennial Report: May 1, 1964 April 30, 1966 Deer hunter success remains high but suffi cient hunting pressure is not available from resident hunters to achieve and maintain the needed reduction of deer. It appears that Montana sportsmen do not support the lower hunting success associated with reduced deer populations needed to allow improvement in range forage conditions. A number of deer ranges have had winter forage destroyed or suffered a great reduction in the forage supply. It is forecasted that more ranges will lose their ability to support deer and be added to this list of depleted ranges unless deer are reduced and kept at a low level. There is a great demand for deer, but the resource cannot be increased or even maintained on the growing number of deteria rated ranges. This problem must be solved and deer ranges perpetuated to have sufficient deer for future generations to enjoy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State of Montana Biennial Report of the Fish and Game Commission: For May 1, 1944 April 30, 1945; May 1, 1945 April 30, 1946 Demands of the resident sportsman and non-resident sportsman for more fish and game is ever on the increase. Methods of transporta tion to and from hunting and fishing grounds, as well as the methods of taking fish and game, are becoming more and more efficient. The problem that confronts Montana sportsmen and the Fish and Game Commission is to conserve our present supply of wildlife and to provide means of increasing our game fish populations and certain species of game animals and game birds in habitats which have the carrying capacity and room for an increase Without upsetting existing stable economic land use pro-grams. To meet this problem the Commission necessarily must expand its program to propagate, administer and conserve wildlife in proportion to the demand. There is, therefore, a need to provide an increase in revenue to finance such a program and to compensate for the decline in the purchasing power of the dollar. This report of the Fish and Game Commission for the biennium presents some of the accomplishments of our game management pro gram, and calls attention to some of the needs and recommendations to further the program. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report of the Montana Fish and Game Commission, 1925-1926 The Hungarian partridge, recognized by northwestern sportsmen as the little feathered fox of the fields among game birds, has demonstrated that he can thrive in Montana climes, while his multi-colored Ringneck friend has spread his kind in like manner where they have been protected. With the surplus accumulated in the fish and game fund, the commission will be enabled to continue its wide-spread activities during the coming biennium. This fund has been built up by the sportsmen themselves. Not one dollar of tax money is paid by Montana residents for the support of this work and the depart ment is entirely self sustaining. Money derived from the sale of licenses, from fines, the sale of confiscated game and guns, beaver permits, beaver tags and similar sources goes to pay for the work of the commission. The growth of the fund means the growth of endeavor. It will enable the commission to take steps further to advance the protection and propagation of fish and game. It will make possible the construction of additional rearing ponds, the planting by trained fish hatchery employes of most of the fingerlings raised in our hatcheries, in the lakes and streams of the state. It will enable the commission to complete construction of a pond culture station at Miles City for the production of fish peculiarly suitable to the waters of the eastern portion of Montana. The flooding of dry lake beds will be made possible, in cases where they may be filled by artificial diversion of water from irrigation ditches or streams. This means attracting greater numbers of migratory water fowl and better sport during the open season for sportsmen who are making work of the department possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report of Montana Fish and Game Commission, 1921-1922: Including Special Report of Superintendent of Hatcheries and a Brief Outline of the Work of the Biological Branch This species of salmon has been introduced with marked success in Ronan Lake. It has met with instant favor among anglers due to its fighting instinct which resembles that of the rainbow, its size and the flavor of its flesh. Specimens have been obtained which were more than thirty-six inches long. Such specimens when prime would weight twenty-five or thirty pounds. But at the time the specimen mentioned was captured. Due to spawning activities. It was in a very poor condition. This species. As well as others native to the Pacific coast, do not eat from the time they begin working on the spawning beds until after their spawning is completed, when they die. It has been hoped that they might live after spawning in our fresh water lakes. But examination of the Spawned out fish prove that they pass through the same stages of emaciation as do those which run to their spawn ng grounds direct from the ocean, and with the same results - death usually resulting after the spawning has been completed. In order to keep the waters stocked with this species it is necessary to obtain eggs each season from the Coast. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report, Montana Fish and Game Commission: May 1, 1966-April 30, 1968 In terms Of variety of game fish species, number of quality streams, rivers and lakes, and fisherman accessibility Montana has assumed the position of number one trout fishing state in the nation. This is particularly significant where wild trout are concerned. Montana has partly come into this position due to research and application preserving fisheries values, and legal means necessary to maintain the resources. Montana has also reached this position due to former excellent fish producing states falling behind in the crush Of competition for land and water uses which result in massive pollution and fish habitat destruction. The pressure grows in direct proportion to population increases and the complexity of resolving more and more conflicts of interests over Montana water and watersheds. Montana Fish and Game Department programs aim at perpetuating and enhancing habitat values beneficial to fish and the wise utilization of this important resource in the face of whatever the future may have to of f er. The possibility that this rare big game animal was not holding his own as well as other species under present-day hunting pressure makes this work of particular value. Several current changes in the hunting regulations have been based upon the findings of this project. The capture of big game in areas of abundance and its release in desirable areas is becoming one of the most important phases of management. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report, Montana Game and Fish Commission, State of Montana, 1933 During the season of 1033 the department paid bounty on 91 mountain lions. The fish and game commission pays a bounty of $25 for each lion killed within the state. These animals are great enemies of wild life as well as domestic stock, and the commission feels that the payment of the bounty is small, indeed, to the return to the sportsmen of the state. It is hard to speak definitely of progress - although the commission has been assured that progress has been made, considering the critical period that the department has passed through with colors flying and increasing support from the sportsmen of the state. The commission has carried on its work - and this is outstanding - it has stayed within its income. There have been curtailments in all departments, but the loyal support and cooperation of all sportsmen in Montana has been most gratifying. Montana is rapidly coming to the forefront as a sportsmen's paradise, not only for those in Montana but for those in other states - east, west, north and south. License returns for this year show a great number of outsiders coming to Montana in quest of big game - the chance to hunt through this marvelous country - its natural parks as great as its national ones. Credit must be given to the highway commission for its program of better roads, to the forestery service, and to other agencies bringing about a "Montana Game Revival." A perusal of the reports of the biennial show progress. This, coupled with the knowledge that Montana sportsmen are behind the Montana fish and game commission and are ready to cooperate to the fullest degree, leads me to say that the future of the Montana fish and game department looks brighter.
