Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jackrabbit's life spanned more than eleven decades. Born in Norway in 1875, he spent his early years there before going to university in Berlin. As a young engineer he emigrated to the United States. After living and working in New York, in 1928 he moved to Canada with his wife and children and made his home in Montreal. Despite the financial problems which he encountered throughout his life, his good humour and determination never failed nor did his devotion to the outdoors and the development of skiing. Jackrabbit became a symbol for wilderness adventure and the excitement of cross-country skiing and, through his energy and enthusiasm, managed to impart his ideals to countless others. Alice Johannsen vividly describes the way her father lived and thought, and explains the personal philosophy that shaped his activities and achievements. This enjoyable biography will appeal to a wide range of general readers and offers a rich source for studies in sport, sociology, Canadian history, and Scandinavian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mandarino and Anderson are the first to bring together all of the known data on this classic mineral locality, Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec. This site is one of the most important sources of rare and beautiful minerals in the world. The location is outstanding, both for the rarity of its minerals anf the number of its mineral species. Over 200 mineral species have been identified a Mont Saint-Hilaire, including some found nowhere else or located only in remote areas of the earth. The numerous mineral species found at Mont Saint-Hilaire are described in detail and handsomely illustrated in almost 200 color and black-and-white photomicrographs, sketches, and crystal drawings. The text consists mostly of mineral description and addresses the interests of amateur and professional mineralogists alike. Five appendices present specialized technical data on unit cell parameters, X-ray powder diffraction, occurrence, mineral classification, and chemical analysis for the professional. The book will be a valuable aid to the reader in the identificaton and collection of minerals.

Download or read book Stable Mineral Assemblages of Igneous Rocks written by A. Rittmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the results of a lengthy study which Professor ALFRED RITTMANN began some thirty years ago. The relationship between the chemical and mineralogical composition of igneous rocks is established as far as is possible. Petrographers will appreciate that this problem is extremely complex, particularly since this relationship forms the basis of the classification and nomenclature of igneous rocks. The ingenious scheme of calculation of the CI.P.W. norm system is essentially chemical in nature. The compositions of the stoichiometrically ideal "normative minerals" do not correspond to those of the constituent minerals found in rocks. Although the "norm" is not intended to equal the "mode" or actual mineral composition of a rock, at least a qualitative agreement between the norm and the mode is desirable. For a number of rocks and rock groups, especially the leucocratic and silicic rocks, the deviation of the norm from the mode is generally within tolerable limits. For the melanocratic and highly subsilicic rocks, on the other hand, the CI.P. W. scheme of calculation too often yields results which fail to reflect the observed mineral composition. The anomalies produced in the cal culation of extremely subsilicic volcanic rocks have recently been briefly discussed by F. CHAVES and H. S. YODER, JR. (1971).

Download or read book France written by United States. Office of Geography and published by Washington, D.C. : [The Board]. This book was released on 1964 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly the whole of America's partisan politics centers on a single question: Can markets solve our social problems? And for years this question has played out ferociously in the debates about how we should educate our children. From the growth of vouchers and charter schools to the implementation of No Child Left Behind, policy makers have increasingly turned to market-based models to help improve our schools, believing that private institutions--because they are competitively driven--are better than public ones. With The Public School Advantage, Christopher A. and Sarah Theule Lubienski offer powerful evidence to undercut this belief, showing that public schools in fact out-perform private ones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the mid-twentieth century, Mineral Science and Engineering educator Frank White played an influential role in the advancement of his field, widely respected not only for his knowledge but also for his advocacy, leadership, and visionary perspective on both mining technologies and their impact on the environment. He looked at mining and metallurgical engineering though a much wider lens than was common at the time, embracing a diversity of cultures with environmental consciousness, inclusiveness, and a commitment to sustainability. Written by his son, this is the story of Frank White—a story that connects people, cultures, and histories from around the world: Australia, New Zealand, the Western Pacific, South East Asia, and North America. He lived through hardship, warfare, and economic upheavals, but with the love of his family, and the satisfaction of scientific and educational advancement, he remained always a seeker of knowledge, and an inspiration for all those whose lives he touched.
