Download or read book Radiant Human written by Christina Lonsdale and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolutionary exploration of the relationship between human energy and color, visualized through more than 200 photographs from the “the Annie Leibovitz of aura photography” (New York Times) and a “Dutch painter on acid” (Vogue). The prodigal daughter of a visionary painter mother and a two-time commune founding father, Christina Lonsdale was raised by her parents on a commune in Taos, New Mexico, at the dawn of the digital age in the 1990s—formative years when science (the advent of the worldwide web, the introduction of the cell phone) and spiritualism (New Age) occupied equal bandwidth. Having her aura photograph taken awoke a passion that combined her spiritual and technological interests (an aura is an energy field emanating around a living being comprised of mental, spiritual, and emotional levels; an aura camera captures the colors of the aura on Polaroid film). With her first aura camera—the Auracam 6000—she began photographing and analyzing family and friends, then in 2014, took her skills and equipment on the road. Radiant Human includes hundreds of Polaroids selected from the author’s vast archives of some 45,000 images she has taken over a six-year period. The book explores the nature of the human aura, and the notion that aura images may not only capture a person’s essence in that moment, but reveal characteristics of their overall disposition. As Lonsdale describes what all the colors suggest, considering their many variations and nuances, and in relationship to each other. To illuminate her discoveries, she shares her subjects’ stories throughout the book, sometimes accompanied by a single shot, other times by a series of images taken over a period of year. She also includes profiles of well-known people she has photographed including Chloë Sevigny, Joseph Altuzarra, Busy Philipps, and SZA. Lonsdale makes clear that we are not just physical bodies, but collections of energy as well—giving consideration to the relationship of how we present ourselves to the world and who we are as well as the potential reality of the space in between. Her aura work is a study of humanity, and the energy we radiate and receive—the good, the bad, and the weird vibes—helping us understand better who we are.
Download or read book Desert Oracle written by Ken Layne and published by MCD. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cult-y pocket-size field guide to the strange and intriguing secrets of the Mojave—its myths and legends, outcasts and oddballs, flora, fauna, and UFOs—becomes the definitive, oracular book of the desert For the past five years, Desert Oracle has existed as a quasi-mythical, quarterly periodical available to the very determined only by subscription or at the odd desert-town gas station or the occasional hipster boutique, its canary-yellow-covered, forty-four-page issues handed from one curious desert zealot to the next, word spreading faster than the printers could keep up with. It became a radio show, a podcast, a live performance. Now, for the first time—and including both classic and new, never-before-seen revelations—Desert Oracle has been bound between two hard covers and is available to you. Straight out of Joshua Tree, California, Desert Oracle is “The Voice of the Desert”: a field guide to the strange tales, singing sand dunes, sagebrush trails, artists and aliens, authors and oddballs, ghost towns and modern legends, musicians and mystics, scorpions and saguaros, out there in the sand. Desert Oracle is your companion at a roadside diner, around a campfire, in your tent or cabin (or high-rise apartment or suburban living room) as the wind and the coyotes howl outside at night. From journal entries of long-deceased adventurers to stray railroad ad copy, and musings on everything from desert flora, rumored cryptid sightings, and other paranormal phenomena, Ken Layne's Desert Oracle collects the weird and the wonderful of the American Southwest into a single, essential volume.
Download or read book Wartime Memoirs of Drunken Debauchery written by Doctor Brdman and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The online literary magazine www.brdman.com presents Wartime Memoirs of Drunken Debauchery, Dr. Brdman's first collection of memoirs. Brdman's raw confessional writing style, loaded with sarcasm and wit, fluctuates between poetic verse and narrative prose, while alternating tone and form in order to promulgate his constant state of cognitive dissidence. Unapologetically, Matthew Joseph pontificates his lifelong struggles with faith, love, sexual promiscuity, childhood abandonment, gynecomastia, death, and perpetual alcohol abuse, which hindered his development as a leader of Marines and as a man. Developing severe hypogonadism and losing the ability to produce testosterone and sperm coerced Matthew Joseph to reevaluate his life of mass destruction. Not every chapter will make you laugh; not every chapter will make you cry. In the end, Wartime Memoirs of Drunken Debauchery (WMDs) leaves readers in shock and awe.
Download or read book Good Strategy Bad Strategy written by Richard Rumelt and published by Currency. This book was released on 2011-07-19 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good Strategy/Bad Strategy clarifies the muddled thinking underlying too many strategies and provides a clear way to create and implement a powerful action-oriented strategy for the real world. Developing and implementing a strategy is the central task of a leader. A good strategy is a specific and coherent response to—and approach for—overcoming the obstacles to progress. A good strategy works by harnessing and applying power where it will have the greatest effect. Yet, Rumelt shows that there has been a growing and unfortunate tendency to equate Mom-and-apple-pie values, fluffy packages of buzzwords, motivational slogans, and financial goals with “strategy.” In Good Strategy/Bad Strategy, he debunks these elements of “bad strategy” and awakens an understanding of the power of a “good strategy.” He introduces nine sources of power—ranging from using leverage to effectively focusing on growth—that are eye-opening yet pragmatic tools that can easily be put to work on Monday morning, and uses fascinating examples from business, nonprofit, and military affairs to bring its original and pragmatic ideas to life. The detailed examples range from Apple to General Motors, from the two Iraq wars to Afghanistan, from a small local market to Wal-Mart, from Nvidia to Silicon Graphics, from the Getty Trust to the Los Angeles Unified School District, from Cisco Systems to Paccar, and from Global Crossing to the 2007–08 financial crisis. Reflecting an astonishing grasp and integration of economics, finance, technology, history, and the brilliance and foibles of the human character, Good Strategy/Bad Strategy stems from Rumelt’s decades of digging beyond the superficial to address hard questions with honesty and integrity.

Book excerpt: "An intimate portrait of one of Shakespeare's most inspired moments: the year of King Lear, Macbeth and Antony and Cleopatra. 1606, while a very good year for Shakespeare, is a fraught one for England. Plague returns. There is surprising resistance to the new king's desire to turn England and Scotland into a united Britain. And fear and uncertainty sweep the land and expose deep divisions in the aftermath of the failed terrorist attack that came to be known as the Gunpowder Plot. James Shapiro deftly demonstrates how these extraordinary plays responded to the tumultuous events of this year, events that in unexpected ways touched upon Shakespeare's own life ... Download or read book Life Inside the Cordon written by Kim O'Brien-Williams and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Feb. 22, 2011, a massive earthquake struck Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 185 people. This book is the diary of my Life Inside the Cordon, working for the New Zealand Army for six months before the cordon, later known as the CBD Red Zone, was opened to the public. It was written as a memoir for my son, James, begun as a diary for him because he was only two years old when I was working on the cordon, and I felt guilty having to put him in preschool while I worked twelve hours a day. The story begins with my life in Dunedin and how I was struggling to deal with work, family, and a broken marriage. It’s about my decision to move and start my life over, and how I struggled to get to Christchurch, looking for a fresh start. My memoir provides a daily account of conversations I had with locals, tourists, and contractors working within the cordon, disclosing their thoughts and feelings about Christchurch and the earthquake. The last cordons were removed on June 30, 2013, over two years after the quake struck. This natural disaster played a large part of the emotional rollercoaster I was going through at the time, including the tragedies of my son’s car accident and a death in the family. There’s also the light side, featuring life’s funny moments as well as my views on the differences between the rich and poor in Christchurch, and how the problems they face are vastly different.
Download or read book Universal Terrors 1951 1955 written by Tom Weaver and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universal Studios created the first cinematic universe of monsters--Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and others became household names during the 1930s and 1940s. During the 1950s, more modern monsters were created for the Atomic Age, including one-eyed globs from outer space, mutants from the planet Metaluna, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the 100-foot high horror known as Tarantula. This over-the-top history is the definitive retrospective on Universal's horror and science fiction movies of 1951-1955. Standing as a sequel to Tom Weaver, Michael Brunas and John Brunas's Universal Horrors (Second Edition, 2007), it covers eight films: The Strange Door, The Black Castle, It Came from Outer Space, Creature from the Black Lagoon, This Island Earth, Revenge of the Creature, Cult of the Cobra and Tarantula. Each receives a richly detailed critical analysis, day-by-day production history, interviews with filmmakers, release information, an essay on the score, and many photographs, including rare behind-the-scenes shots.
