Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monster Cinema introduces readers to a vast menagerie of movie monsters. Some are gigantic, like King Kong or the kaiju in Pacific Rim, while others are microscopic. Some monsters appear uncannily human, from serial killers like Norman Bates to the pod people in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. And of course, other movie monsters like demons, ghosts, vampires, and witches emerge from long folklore traditions. Film expert Barry Keith Grant considers what each type of movie monster reveals about what it means to be human and how we regard the world. Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of film history, Grant presents us with an eclectic array of monster movies, from Nosferatu to Get Out. As he discovers, although monster movies might claim to be about Them!, they are really about the capacity for horror that lurks within each of us.

Book The Computer s Voice

Download or read book The Computer s Voice written by Liz W. Faber and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2020-12-22 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deconstruction of gender through the voices of Siri, HAL 9000, and other computers that talk Although computer-based personal assistants like Siri are increasingly ubiquitous, few users stop to ask what it means that some assistants are gendered female, others male. Why is Star Trek’s computer coded as female, while HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey is heard as male? By examining how gender is built into these devices, author Liz W. Faber explores contentious questions around gender: its fundamental constructedness, the rigidity of the gender binary, and culturally situated attitudes on male and female embodiment. Faber begins by considering talking spaceships like those in Star Trek, the film Dark Star, and the TV series Quark, revealing the ideologies that underlie space-age progress. She then moves on to an intrepid decade-by-decade investigation of computer voices, tracing the evolution from the masculine voices of the ’70s and ’80s to the feminine ones of the ’90s and ’00s. Faber ends her account in the present, with incisive looks at the film Her and Siri herself. Going beyond current scholarship on robots and AI to focus on voice-interactive computers, The Computer’s Voice breaks new ground in questions surrounding media, technology, and gender. It makes important contributions to conversations around the gender gap and the increasing acceptance of transgender people.

Book Player vs Monster

Download or read book Player vs Monster written by Jaroslav Svelch and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-02-07 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the gruesome game characters we love to beat—and what they tell us about ourselves. Since the early days of video games, monsters have played pivotal roles as dangers to be avoided, level bosses to be defeated, or targets to be destroyed for extra points. But why is the figure of the monster so important in gaming, and how have video games come to shape our culture’s conceptions of monstrosity? To answer these questions, Player vs. Monster explores the past half-century of monsters in games, from the dragons of early tabletop role-playing games and the pixelated aliens of Space Invaders to the malformed mutants of The Last of Us and the bizarre beasts of Bloodborne, and reveals the common threads among them. Covering examples from aliens to zombies, Jaroslav Švelch explores the art of monster design and traces its influences from mythology, visual arts, popular culture, and tabletop role-playing games. At the same time, he shows that video games follow the Cold War–era notion of clearly defined, calculable enemies, portraying monsters as figures that are irredeemably evil yet invariably vulnerable to defeat. He explains the appeal of such simplistic video game monsters, but also explores how the medium could evolve to present more nuanced depictions of monstrosity.

Download or read book AI in the Movies written by Paula Murphy and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AI in the Movies analyses film representations of artificial intelligence, from their first emergence in the 1950s up to 2020. These strong or general artificial intelligences take different forms: some are digital AIs, some robot AIs, some move between material and digital forms. Some are indistinguishable from humans, and some have no material existence at all. Analysis of these representations demonstrates filmmakers eroding the division between human and AI, by presenting character doubles, narrative parallels and eventually, identities in which the biological and artificial overlap and intersect in new hybrid forms. The book identifies the aspects of AI science that fascinate filmmakers and outlines the key themes and tropes in AI film, including parent-child relationships, the female robot, human-AI doubles, parallels and hybrids, and AI death and mortality.

Download or read book Rogue World written by Ryan Schutz and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-07-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three planets exactly the same size floated through space. They were alive. And they fed off the light of the stars. When they discovered a new star, they left their orbit for the energy of greater stars. Millennia passed, and new stars burst into existence. And the planets moved slowly toward the new stars like moths to a flame, sometimes taking decades or centuries to arrive. Planets were knocked out of the orbits they held. These planets were not alive, but the inhabitants were. Many lives were lost as a result of this planetary movement, their populations scattered to the stars. The strongest beings crafted a plan. They lured the planets out to the farthest arm of a galaxy. They made the illusion of a new star, brighter and stronger than any other in the galaxy. But the planets eventually came to realize they had been fooled, and war broke out. The planets took the DNA of races they had encountered and combined them to breed an army. The planets combined their energy to send their consciousness, which created wormholes through space, sucking in creatures from other planets. The war was never ending. Eventually, there was a great cataclysm. Stars exploded, and black holes were formed. An entire arm of the galaxy collapsed. The three planets were hurled into space. Their very cores froze. They ceased all consciousness. They wandered the darkest parts of the universe asleep. They traveled so far that they lapsed in and out of time. They awoke orbiting a young star, hidden and surrounded by millions of dead planets. They had been carried into a dead galaxy with one surviving star. It was young and small, but it was strong. The planets slowly regained consciousness and realized that their surfaces had been colonized by another race from across the stars. This race was strong and violent. They liked this race. They wanted to use them for revenge on the beings who tricked them. But these samples had flaws. They had sicknesses and diseases that made them unfit. The planets needed fresh samples.

Book Monster Culture in the 21st Century

Download or read book Monster Culture in the 21st Century written by Marina Levina and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, our rapidly changing world faced terrorism, global epidemics, economic and social strife, new communication technologies, immigration, and climate change to name a few. These fears and tensions reflect an evermore-interconnected global environment where increased mobility of people, technologies, and disease have produced great social, political, and economical uncertainty. The essays in this collection examine how monstrosity has been used to manage these rising fears and tensions. Analyzing popular films and televisions shows, such as True Blood, Twilight, Paranormal Activity, District 9, Battlestar Galactica, and Avatar, it argues that monstrous narratives of the past decade have become omnipresent specifically because they represent collective social anxieties over resisting and embracing change in the 21st century. The first comprehensive text that uses monstrosity not just as a metaphor for change, but rather a necessary condition through which change is lived and experienced in the 21st century, this approach introduces a different perspective toward the study of monstrosity in culture.
