Book excerpt: Written back during the COVID- 19 period, ‘Ombrophilous Feelings’ transcends the elevation of feelings, imagination and creativity . It is a magnificent testament of what art can do to a mind, locked in the boundary of four walls for months. An intricate embellishment of thirty pieces of poetry and prose, this literary collection equalises the essence of verses, letters, poetic odes, short story and personified memoirs. The word ‘Ombrophilous’ aptly complements the excellent stroke of artwork and literature profoundly detailing the unlimited embedded feelings and thoughts of the poet through its strengthened aesthetics. The interplay of words and metaphors traverses through the intense abstract of the poet and reverates with the subtlety of emotions, impermanence of moments, adversities of life and grandeur lessons learnt in our short span of stay on mother earth. ‘Ombrophilous Feelings’ is an exquisite blend of mesmerising literary work travelling through the different arenas, such as pandemic, troubled times, entangled situations and neglected feelings etc , which are to be adored by generations to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the eve of the Japanese landing in Lingayen Gulf, 2/Lt. Douglas MacQueen, 4th Regiment USMC was at Darmortis, a small coastal town on the north shore of the Gulf. His was there to observe the action and report to his Commanding Offi cer, Col. Howard. The Marines, as branch of the Navy, were getting little information from the Army. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander of American and Filipino Forces, went so far asto declare the “...4th Marines untrained for combat...” 2/Lt. McQueen witnessed the subsequent collapse of MacArthur’s Grand Beach Defense Strategy; MGen. Jonathan ‘Skinny’ Wainwright’s magnificent leadership in the orderly retreat and delay action from the Gulf to Bataan that enabled Southern Force to reach the peninsula before the bridges were demolished; the abandonment of most of the supplies originally intended for Bataan that had been moved to advanced locations in the Gulf at MacArthur’s direction but without any contingency arrangements for their removal as such anticipation, according to the General, was defeatism. MacQueen was determined to survive and hoped to rejoin his wife in Australia.
Download or read book Himalayan Climes and Multispecies Encounters written by Jelle J.P. Wouters and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-17 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woven together as a text of humanities-based environmental research outcomes, Himalayan Climes and Multispecies Encounters hosts a collection of historical and fieldwork-based case studies and conceptual discussions of climate change in the greater Himalayan region. The collective endeavour of the book is expressed in what the editors characterize as the clime studies of the Himalayan multispecies worlds. Synonymous with place embodied with weather patterns and environmental history, clime is understood as both a recipient of and a contributor to climate change over time. Supported by empirical and historical findings, the chapters showcase climate change as clime change that concurrently entails multispecies encounters, multifaceted cultural processes, and ecologically specific environmental changes in the more-than-human worlds of the Himalayas. As the case studies complement, enrich, and converse with natural scientific understandings of Himalayan climate change, this book offers students, academics, and the interested public fresh approaches to the interdisciplinary field of climate studies and policy debates on climate change and sustainable development.
Download or read book Weather Science written by Brian Clegg and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2024-07-18 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone has an interest in the weather, whether it's to check the prospects for a day out or to know when best to harvest a crop. The Earth's weather systems also provide some of the most dramatic forces of nature, from the vast release of energy in a lightning flash to the devastating impact of tornadoes and hurricanes. For centuries, our only real guide to future weather was folklore, but with the introduction of the first weather forecasts and maps in Victorian times, attempts were made to give some warning of the weather to come. Until relatively recently, these forecasts could be wildly inaccurate - think of Michael Fish's denial that there was a storm on the way the night before the UK's great storm of 1987. This was due to the mathematically chaotic nature of weather systems, first discovered in the 1960s, the understanding of which would transform forecasting from the 1990s and mean that meteorologists became some of the foremost users of supercomputers. From the crystalline perfection of the snowflake to the transfer of energy from the Sun, science lies at the heart of the weather and our understanding of it. In recent years, weather science has moved to the leading edge with advanced modelling, versatile use of satellite data and a better understanding of mathematical chaos. This is a true example of hot science at work.
