Book The Laboratory From Dramatic Romances and Lyrics

Download or read book The Laboratory From Dramatic Romances and Lyrics written by Robert Browning and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "The Laboratory (From Dramatic Romances and Lyrics)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "The Laboratory" is a poem and dramatic monologue. This poem, set in seventeenth century France, is the monologue of a woman speaking to an apothecary as he prepares a poison, which she intends to use to kill her rival in love. It was inspired by the life of Marie Madeleine Marguerite D'Aubray, marquise de Brinvilliers (1630-1676), who poisoned her father and two brothers and planned to poison her husband. Robert Browning (1812-1889) was an English poet and playwright whose mastery of dramatic verse, and in particular the dramatic monologue, made him one of the foremost Victorian poets. His poems are known for their irony, characterization, dark humor, social commentary, historical settings, and challenging vocabulary and syntax. The speakers in his poems are often musicians or painters whose work functions as a metaphor for poetry.

Book The Dramatic Monologue

Download or read book The Dramatic Monologue written by Elisabeth A. Howe and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Dramatic Monologue, Elisabeth A. Howe defines the characteristics of the subject as a genre, clearly differentiating it from the lyric poem. One feature she discusses is the double voice of the dramatic monologue - the reader hears simultaneously the voices of the poet and the speaker. This dialogical effect distinguishes the dramatic monologue both from lyric poetry and from narrative poems written in the first person. The use of a persona allows the poet to distance himself or herself from the poem. Howe investigates the origins of the dramatic monologue before examining poems by Browning and Tennyson, both masters of the form and both largely responsible for its popularity with late-nineteenth-century readers and poets. She offers close readings of Browning's "The Bishop Orders His Tomb at Saint Praxed's Church" and Tennyson's "Tithonus". Later chapters include detailed analyses of dramatic monologues by twentieth-century poets, including Ezra Pound's "Marvoil", T.S. Eliot's "Portrait of a Lady", and poems by Robert Frost, Randall Jarrell, and the contemporary poet Richard Howard.

Book Browning s Lyrics

Download or read book Browning s Lyrics written by Eleanor Cook and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1974-12-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Browning's lyrics are favourite choices for anthologies but are rarely examined closely. This is the first full-length study of the lyrics, and includes detailed analyses of such well-known poems as Love Among the Ruins, Two in the Campagna, A Serenade at the Villa, A Toccata of Galuppi's, By the Fireside, and James Lee's Wife. Eleanor Cook explores Browning's use of repeated images and themes in the lyrics, examines these patterns in other poems and in his letters, and analyses their growth and change in all his work. She demonstrates how the lyrics may be linked with Browning's other work and shows something of his essential artistic unity. His imaginary is found to be more consistent and complex than is usually assumed. Students of Browning will find this work stimulating and instructive, while lovers of Browning will read it with pure pleasure. The reader will return to many of the poems with a rciher sense of their continuing vitality. In an earlier form this study was awarded the first A.S.P. Woodhouse Prize by the University of Toronto.

Book Dramatic Monologue

    Book Details:
  • Author : Glennis Byron
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2014-05-01
  • ISBN : 1134695179
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Dramatic Monologue written by Glennis Byron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic monologue is traditionally associated with Victorian poets such as Robert Browning and Alfred Tennyson, and is generally considered to have disappeared with the onset of modernism in the twentieth century. Glennis Byron unravels its history and argues that, contrary to belief, the monologue remains popular to this day. This far-reaching and neatly structured volume: * explores the origins of the monologue and presents a history of definitions of the term * considers the monologue as a form of social critique * explores issues at play in our understanding of the genre, such as subjectivity, gender and politics * traces the development of the genre through to the present day. Taking as example the increasingly politicized nature of contemporary poetry, the author clearly and succinctly presents an account of the monologue's growing popularity over the past twenty years.
