George Washington fought at the Battle of Monmouth as the region played a pivotal role in the birth of the republic. Henry Hudson anchored off Monmouth's shores in 1609 and was the first European to meet with the Lenape Native Americans there. A gun barrel of the USS New Jersey, the most decorated battleship in American history, was painstakingly transported to Battery Lewis, a fortification built along the county's highlands to protect New York Harbor during World War II. Bruce Springsteen elevated Asbury Park and the Stone Pony into a national music destination, and he remains the unofficial poet laureate of the Jersey Shore. Authors Rick Geffken and Muriel J. Smith highlight compelling stories of the seaside county's four-hundred-year history.

Book Slavery and Freedom in the Rural North

Download or read book Slavery and Freedom in the Rural North written by Graham Russell Hodges and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1997 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the development of a single African American community in eastern New Jersey, Hodges examines the experience of slavery and freedom in the rural north. This unique social history addresses many long held assumptions about the experience of slavery and emancipation outside the south. For example, by tracing the process by which whites maintained "a durable architecture of oppression" and a rigid racial hierarchy, it challenges the notions that slavery was milder and that racial boundaries were more permeable in the north. Monmouth County, New Jersey, because of its rich African American heritage and equally well-preserved historical record, provides an outstanding opportunity to study the rural life of an entire community over the course of two centuries. Hodges weaves an intricate pattern of life and death, work and worship, from the earliest settlement to the end of the Civil War.

Book Roster of the People of Revolutionary Monmouth County New Jersey

Download or read book Roster of the People of Revolutionary Monmouth County New Jersey written by Michael S. Adelberg and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1997 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable book is nothing less than an alphabetical listing of nearly the entire adult male (and some of the female) population of Monmouth County during the American Revolution--some 6,000 Monmouth Countians between 1776 and 1783. For roughly half of the persons listed, we find one or two identifying pieces of information, such as militia service, date of death, signer of a petition, conviction of a misdemeanor, occupation, and so on. But in an equal number of cases we are presented with enough information to trace the allegiance or comings and goings of a Monmouth County resident over a number of years (e.g., Abiel Aiken: militia volunteer, 1776; signer of petition, 1777; coroner, 1778; justice of the peace, 1780-83; leased horses to Continental Army, 1781; and so on).

This book was released on 2002 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dunmore's War of 1774 was the culmination of a long series of disputes between settlers and Native Americans in western Virginia and Pennsylvania. In an effort to quell the increasingly violent Indian incursions, Virginia Governor John Murray, the Earl of Dunmore, carried on a successful retaliatory campaign known as "Dunmore's War." This book presents a history of that war through the use of primary documents selected from the mass of manuscript historical material in the famous Draper Collection at the Wisconsin Historical Society. Numerous footnotes throughout the volume provide a wealth of biographical information, as do the lists of muster rolls and biographies of field officers at the end of the book.

Book Stories of Slavery in New Jersey

Download or read book Stories of Slavery in New Jersey written by Rick Geffken and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dutch and English settlers brought the first enslaved people to New Jersey in the seventeenth century. By the time of the Revolutionary War, slavery was an established practice on labor-intensive farms throughout what became known as the Garden State. The progenitor of the influential Morris family, Lewis Morris, brought Barbadian slaves to toil on his estate of Tinton Manor in Monmouth County. Colonel Tye, an escaped slave from Shrewsbury, joined the British Ethiopian Regiment during the Revolutionary War and led raids throughout the towns and villages near his former home. Charles Reeves and Hannah Van Clief married soon after their emancipation in 1850 and became prominent citizens of Lincroft, as did their next four generations. Author Rick Geffken reveals stories from New Jersey's dark history of slavery.

Download or read book New Jersey written by Maxine N. Lurie and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-07 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Jersey: A History of the Garden State presents a fresh, comprehensive overview of New Jersey’s history from the prehistoric era to the present. The findings of archaeologists, political, social, and economic historians provide a new look at how the Garden State has evolved. The state has a rich Native American heritage and complex colonial history. It played a pivotal role in the American Revolution, early industrialization, and technological developments in transportation, including turnpikes, canals, and railroads. The nineteenth century saw major debates over slavery. While no Civil War battles were fought in New Jersey, most residents supported it while questioning the policies of the federal government. Next, the contributors turn to industry, urbanization, and the growth of shore communities. A destination for immigrants, New Jersey continued to be one of the most diverse states in the nation. Many of these changes created a host of social problems that reformers tried to minimize during the Progressive Era. Settlement houses were established, educational institutions grew, and utopian communities were founded. Most notably, women gained the right to vote in 1920. In the decades leading up to World War II, New Jersey benefited from back-to-work projects, but the rise of the local Ku Klux Klan and the German American Bund were sad episodes during this period. The story then moves to the rise of suburbs, the concomitant decline of the state’s cities, growing population density, and changing patterns of wealth. Deep-seated racial inequities led to urban unrest as well as political change, including such landmark legislation as the Mount Laurel decision. Today, immigration continues to shape the state, as does the tension between the needs of the suburbs, cities, and modest amounts of remaining farmland. Well-known personalities, such as Jonathan Edwards, George Washington, Woodrow Wilson, Dorothea Dix, Thomas Edison, Frank Hague, and Albert Einstein appear in the narrative. Contributors also mine new and existing sources to incorporate fully scholarship on women, minorities, and immigrants. All chapters are set in the context of the history of the United States as a whole, illustrating how New Jersey is often a bellwether for the nation..

Book The Monmouth County Park System

Download or read book The Monmouth County Park System written by Clifford W. Zink and published by Friends of Monmouth County Parks. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filled with firsthand accounts and historical images, this handsome book commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Monmouth County Park System. After the construction of the Garden State Parkway in the 1950s provided easy access to New Jersey’s shore towns, the park system was established in order to protect natural and scenic resources, as well as to provide recreational opportunities for the increasing number of residents. Today, this central New Jersey county is a nationally recognized leader in parks and recreation, having preserved more than 15,000 acres of open space, including some of the region’s most significant natural areas and historic sites. By taking an in-depth look at one county’s efforts to preserve open space and provide superior recreation opportunities for all, this volume elevates the relationship of parks and preservation to the quality of life in our nation.
