Book excerpt: With 'I CANNOT HIDE MY ANGER' the artist Monica Bonvicini makes direct reference to the architecture and history of Belvedere 21 in Vienna. She transforms the central hall of the former World's Fair pavilion with a radical intervention that reflects on controversial social questions.Monica Bonvicini has been grappling with the psychology of the space as well as institutional critique in her site-specific installations since the start of the 1990s.Through this she radically lays bare the common narratives of art history and questions outdated social concepts about masculinity and power, intimacy and domesticity, global warming and geopolitical borders, offering a critical perspective on today's Western society. The publication presents ruthless political works created by the artist since 2017.English and German text.Co-published with Belvedere.Accompanies the exhibition 'Monica Bonvicini: I CANNOT HIDE MY ANGER', 28 Jun - 27 Oct 2019, Belvedere 21, Vienna. All inside images courtesy Belvedere 21 - Installation view 'Monica Bonvicini. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new artist's book by Monica Bonvicini is a series of illustrations of her work over the past ten years, counterbalanced by documentation of the places she has worked and exhibited in. A visual essay that enables insight into the 'making' and 'building' of art through a stringent black and white design. With her sculptures, videos, installations and photographs, Bonvicini has long critiqued and deconstructed the presumed neutrality of architecture and modern art. 'I am interested in architecture as a whole. You can, if you wish, avoid people, but you always have to deal with architecture. Memory and identity cannot exist without architecture: it is something indispensable and elementary but at the same time it can develop in virtuous forms of all kinds.' (Monica Bonvicini)

Book Institutional Critique and After

Download or read book Institutional Critique and After written by Southern California Consortium of Art Schools and published by Jrp Ringier. This book was released on 2006 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: « Institutional critique and after explores the history and contemporary reassessment of the Institutional Critique movement lauched in the late 1960s, redeveloped in the 1980s, and vigorously reoriented in recent years to address issues such as globalization. In this publication, the histories, theories, diverse locations, and different kinds of institutional alternative space are investigated, looking at traditional forms of art but also at installation, performance, new media practices, and cultural activism. Its central questions turn on the critical potential of art (and institutions) and whether–and if so how–they can stimulate social or political change. »--

Book excerpt: Essays explore contemporary artists' engagement with destruction, and how it has disrupted the perceived integrity of built structures and institutions. The effects and meanings of destruction are central to the work of many of our most influential artists. Since the early 1960s, artists have employed destruction to creative ends. Here destruction changes from a negative state or passive condition to a highly productive category. The destructive subversion of media imagery aims to release us from its controlling effects. The self-destructing artwork extinguishes art's fixity as arrested form and ushers in the ephemeral and contingent "open work." This anthology explores artworks that convey the threat of destruction an how they have disrupted the perceived integrity of built structures and institutions. Artistic acts of iconoclasm or risk to the self have raised consciousness of authoritarian oppression. More understated works explore the theme of destruction in armed conflict, media violence, and threats to the environment. These text make up the first collection to be focused systematically on destruction in modern and contemporary art. Artists surveyed include Ai Weiwei, John Baldessari, Monica Bonvicini, Alexander Brener, Stuart Brisley, Douglas Gordon, Huang Yong Ping, Enrique Jezik, Milan Knizak, Paul McCarthy, Piero Manzoni, Gordon Matta-Clark, Gustav Metzger, Otto Mühl, Yoko Ono, Raphael Montañez Ortiz, Petr Pavlensky, William Pope.L, Walid Raad, Arnulf Rainer, Robert Rauschenberg, Carolee Schneemann, Song Dong, Jean Tinguely, Wolf Vostell Writers include Alain Badiou, Walter Benjamin, Horst Bredekamp, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Medina Cuauthémoc, Dario Gamboni, Richard Galpin, Caleb Kelly, Bruno Latour, Sven Lütticken, Antonio Negri, Sophie O'Brien, Kristine Stiles, Jennifer Walden

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the accompanying publication to the largest exhibition of contemporary art ever assembled in the U.S., the Prospect.1 New Orleans catalogue is one of the most sought-after art books of 2008-09. Featuring new illustrated essays on New Orleans and its place in twenty-first century America by Prospect.1 organizer Dan Cameron, art historian Barbara Bloemink, journalist Lolis Eric Elie and curator Claire Tancons, the book also includes a fully illustrated section on each of the 81 participating artists, who include William Kentridge, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Fred Tomaselli, Cai Guo Qiang, Sanford Biggers, Tony Fitzpatrick, Amy Sillman, Malick Sidibe, Clare E. Rojas and Monica Bonvicini, among many others. Locating contemporary art in the cauldron that is New Orleans adds a new dimension to the book and its visuals: It's an incisive statement on art making and humanity today. Dan Cameron, the Director and Curator of Prospect.1 New Orleans, is an international New York-based curator who was inspired to organize an exhibition in New Orleans shortly after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Cameron has been a frequent visitor to New Orleans since the late 1980s, and he organized the 1995 New Orleans Triennial for the New Orleans Museum of Art. In May 2007 Cameron took on the position of Visual Arts Director at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center (CAC), one of the leading venues for new art in the South, and a principal venue for Prospect.1 New Orleans.

Book The Heretical Archive

    Book Details:
  • Author : Domietta Torlasco
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press

  • ISBN : 1452939667

Download or read book The Heretical Archive written by Domietta Torlasco and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heretical Archive examines the relationship between memory and creation in contemporary artworks that use digital technology while appropriating film materials. Domietta Torlasco argues that these digital films and multimedia installations radically transform our memory of cinema and our understanding of the archive. Indeed, such works define a notion of archiving not as the passive preservation of audiovisual signs but as an intervention and the creative rearticulation of cinema’s perceptual and political textures. Connecting psychoanalysis, phenomenology, and feminist theory in innovative ways, Torlasco analyzes cutting-edge digital works that engage with the past of European cinema and visual culture, including video installations by Monica Bonvicini (Destroy She Said) and Pierre Huyghe (The Ellipsis), Agnès Varda’s film The Gleaners and I, Marco Poloni’s multimedia installation The Desert Room, and Chris Marker’s CD-ROM Immemory. Torlasco’s central claim is that if the archives of psychoanalysis and cinema have long privileged the lineage that runs from Oedipus to Freud, the archives of the digital age—what she calls the “heretical archive”—can help us imagine an unruly, porous, multifaceted legacy, one in which marginal figures return to speak of lost life as much as of life that demands to be lived.
