Book Money Code Space

Download or read book Money Code Space written by Jack Parkin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the catastrophic events of the 2008 global financial crisis, an anonymous hacker released Bitcoin to claw back power from commercial and central banks. It quickly garnered an enthusiastic following who sought to forge a stable and democratic global economy--a world free from hierarchy and control. In their eyes, Bitcoin's underlying architecture, blockchain, hailed the dawn of decentralisation. Money Code Space shatters these emancipatory claims. In their place, Jack Parkin constructs a new framework for revealing the geographies of power that lie behind blockchain networks. Drawing on first-hand experience in cryptocurrency communities and start-up companies from Silicon Valley to London, Parkin untangles the complex web of culture, politics, and economics that truly drive decentralisation.

Book Blockchain Space

Download or read book Blockchain Space written by Heidi Hecht and published by Heidi Hecht. This book was released on with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What will interplanetary traders look for in any given transaction? Profit, of course. However, hauling around bulky gold, silver and paper money will dig into profits in an environment where the laws of physics apply. Before you suggest doing without a medium of exchange, you may wish to dust off that economics textbook in the attic and consider alternatives that already capable of modernizing an outdated financial system. These alternatives have names like cryptocurrencies and Blockchain. Call Bitcoin “Version 1.0” if you like. It's going to be a long way from Bitcoin to Federation Credits, but creating a complete financial system that's suitable for interplanetary trade is doable if developers start the process now. It can be done, should be done, and will be done if cryptocurrency and Blockchain experts are willing to work together with those interested in a serious effort to colonize the solar system. This way, cryptocurrencies can be literally taken to the Moon, the entire solar system, and possibly beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money and the Space Economy Contributor list Pietro Alessandrini Leslie Budd Gordon Clark Sheila Dow Richard T. Harrison Alan Hudson Roger Lee Colin Mason Jane Pollard David J. Porteous Barney Warf Neil Wrigley Alberto Zazzaro Money is central to understanding the space economy. Not only does money itself have its own geographies, but these in turn help to shape the geographies of economic activity more generally. Across the global economy banking systems and money markets are being restructured. A new economic geography of money and finance is emerging, reflecting, among other things, the momentous changes that are taking place in the world's financial systems, particularly the impact of globalisation, deregulation, privatisation and technological change. Money and the Space Economy brings together leading geographers and economists working on money to highlight the changing geographies of banking, the forces underpinning and threatening international financial centres, the relationship between financial systems, business and the local economy, and the financial causes and consequences of the retreat of the state. With case studies drawn from United Kingdom, Europe and the United States, Money and the Space Economy redraws the map of local, regional, national and international financial spaces. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ethnographic study of China’s new elites and their rarified world of debauchery and corruption: “A must have book for China studies” (Choice). This pioneering investigation reveals the private lives—and the nightlives—of the powerful entrepreneurs and managers redefining success and status in the Chinese city of Chengdu. For more than three years, anthropologist John Osburg accompanied wealthy Chinese businessmen as they courted clients, partners, and government officials. Now he invites readers along on his journey through the highly gendered world of luxury karaoke clubs, saunas, and massage parlors—places designed to cater to the desires of elite men. Within these spaces, a masculinization of business is taking place. Osburg details the complex code of behavior that governs businessmen as they go about banqueting, drinking, gambling, bribing, exchanging gifts, and obtaining sexual services. These intricate social networks play a key role in generating business, performing social status, and reconfiguring gender roles. Yet underneath the façade, many entrepreneurs feel trapped by their obligations and moral compromises in this evolving environment. Osburg examines their deep ambivalence about China’s future and their own complicity in the major issues of post-Mao Chinese society—corruption, inequality, materialism, and loss of trust.
