Book excerpt: A critical look at the life, work, and influence of the important and award-winning Spanish architect Rafael Moneo The Spanish architect Rafael Moneo (b. 1937) has won numerous awards (including the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize), yet this publication is the first to offer a critical study of his career as a whole--not only his many built works and projects but also his contributions to teaching and his writings. The book begins with a comprehensive biography, covering Moneo's education, teaching appointments, and encounters with historians and architects in Europe and the United States, such as Peter Eisenman, J rn Utzon, and Bruno Zevi. Also included is a discussion of some of the buildings that he has designed, notably the Prado Museum extension and Atocha Station in Madrid. The following section examines in more detail seven key buildings chosen to illustrate crucial developments in Moneo's thinking, from the Bankinter, Madrid, to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles. The last and most extensive section considers his architectural philosophy: his design approach, his idea of the canon, his theory of composition, his notion of form, and his confrontation with reality--in construction and context.

Book The Freedom of the Architect

Download or read book The Freedom of the Architect written by José Rafael Moneo and published by University of Michigan, Taubman College of Archite. This book was released on 2002 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Freedom of the Architect, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rafael Moneo speaks on form, language and history, broadly, and as represented in examples of his own work. He elaborates on how architects today have disassociated their work from the environment, creating autonomous landmarks with little relationship to their surroundings and how the architect as individual challenges the role of history in the built environment. Moneo's reflections on his own work include: the City Hall of Murcia, Spain, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Kursaal Auditorium in San Sebastian, Spain, and the acclaimed Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles. Spanish born, Madrid-based Moneo's work unites tradition and innovation. He has developed an extensive body of work as an architectural critic and theoretician and his writing has appeared in Oppositions and Lotus. He is a committed educator, having chaired the Harvard Graduate School of Design and lectured internationally.

Book excerpt: "I look beyond solution; I look for an expression."--Eduardo Souto de Moura The architect Eduardo Souto de Moura (b. 1952) has won many accolades, including the 2011 Pritzker Architecture Prize. Based in Porto, Souto de Moura studied under Fernando Távora and worked under fellow Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, with whom he continues to collaborate. Souto de Moura established his own practice in 1980, and his wide-ranging influences, including Mies van der Rohe and Donald Judd, can be seen in the stunning variety of his work, from his acclaimed private houses, to the striking Paula Rego Museum in Cascais and the Braga Municipal Stadium, to his work in historical contexts such as the Convento das Bernardas in Tavira. This beautifully illustrated retrospective provides the most comprehensive account of Souto de Moura's career to date. Drawings, notes and sketches from his archive, and newly commissioned photographs complement essays by scholars and prominent architects that trace Souto de Moura's career, contextualize his work within the larger trends of contemporary international architectural culture, and highlight the originality of his design strategy.

Download or read book Urban Visions written by Carmen Díez Medina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-23 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a useful reference in the field of urbanism. It explains how the contemporary city and landscape have been shaped by certain twentieth century visions that have carried over into the twenty-first century. Aimed at both students and professionals, this collection of essays on diverse subjects and cases does not attempt to establish universal interpretations; it rather highlights some outstanding episodes that help us understand why the planning culture has given way to other forms of urbanism, from urban design to strategic urbanism or landscape urbanism. Compared with global interpretations of urbanism based on socioeconomic history or architectural historiography, Urban Visions. From Planning Culture to Landscape Urbanism, aims to present the discipline couched in international contemporary debate and adopt a historic and comparative perspective. The book’s contents pertain equally to other related disciplines, such as architecture, urban history, urban design, landscape architecture and geography. Foreword by Rafael Moneo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connection is a monograph of ten residences that articulate the office's design process and exploration of creating architectural solutions rooted in natural place. Connection provides insight into how Colorado-based CCY Architects investigates and formulates the connection between people and place. By way of ten recently completed residential projects located throughout the Rocky Mountain region, CCY Architects shares its process and the specific ideas, discoveries, and challenges that emerge with each project. The featured award-winning projects are diverse in scale, location, and intention, including residences in pristine nature, in dense neighborhoods, in an avalanche path, and a house wrapped in music. The interaction among design and place begins with questions. How to conduct an "interview" with the land to discover qualities which contribute to more powerful design solutions? What should a changing habitat live like, feel like, look like? As CCY uncovers the potential elements of each project, they reflect on and respond to the genuine qualities of the land, light, and seasons to devise the building blocks of a meaningful environment. Common to all is a respect for the land and an intention to forge connections.

Book Architecture Re assembled

Download or read book Architecture Re assembled written by Trevor Garnham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning from the rise of modern history in the eighteenth century, this book examines how changing ideas in the discipline of history itself has affected architecture from the beginning of modernity up to the present day. It reflects upon history in order to encourage and assist the reader in finding well-founded principles for architectural design. This is not simply another history of architecture, nor a ‘history of histories’. Setting buildings in their contemporaneous ideas about history, it spans from Fischer von Erlach to Venturi and Rossi, and beyond to architects working in the fallout from both the Modern Movement – Aalto, Louis Kahn, Aldo van Eyck – and Post-modernism – such as Rafael Moneo and Peter Zumthor. It shows how Soane, Schinkel and Stirling, amongst others, made a meaningful use of history and contrasts this with how a misreading of Hegel has led to an abuse of history and an uncritical flight to the future. This is not an armchair history but a lively discussion of our place between past and future that promotes thinking for making.

Book New Glass Architecture

Download or read book New Glass Architecture written by Brent Richards and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely look at the ways in which glass is utilized in some of today's most beautiful and experimental building designs For centuries, glass has provoked fascination with its properties as a versatile material that permits light to enter buildings in spectacular ways. Much of modern architecture has been conceived by using glass to create increasingly minimal structures, to promote the notion of lightweight construction solutions, and to allow maximum daylight into buildings. New Glass Architecture showcases the changing ways that aesthetics and methods for using glass have been developing since the 1990s. The book begins with an introduction that traces the history of key moments in glass architecture--from the stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral to the Crystal Palace of 1851, and early constructions by John Soane, Bruno Taut, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe. Author Brent Richards explains the importance of glass artists in the second half of the 20th century and describes developments in glass technology over the last twenty years. Beautifully illustrated with newly commissioned photographs by Dennis Gilbert, the book features twenty-five case studies of recent glass constructions from around the world by such leading architects as Foster and Partners, Frank Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron, Steven Holl, Toyo Ito & Associates, Jean Nouvel, Raphael Viñoly, and Peter Zumthor. Each building is illustrated in full color and accompanied by detailed drawings. New Glass Architecture features these buildings and more: - Chapel of Ignatius, Seattle - Condé Nast Café, New York - DZ Bank, Berlin - Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia - Kunsthaus, Graz, Austria - Laban Dance Centre, London - Torre Agbar, Barcelona
