At the same time, Frohlich suggested that an "ideal" conductivity could be associated to the sliding of this charge density wave. Since then, several classes of compounds, including layered transition metal dichalcogenides, quasi one-dimensional organic conduc tors and transition metal tri- and tretrachalcogenides have been extensively studied. The molybdenum bronzes or oxides have been discovered or rediscovered as low dimensional conductors in this last decade. A considerable amount of work has now been performed on this subject and it was time to collect some review papers in a single book. Although this book is focused on the molybdenum bronzes and oxides, it has a far more general interest in the field of low dimensional conductors, since several of the molybdenum compounds provide, from our point of view, model systems. This is the case for the quasi one-dimensional blue bronze, especially due to the availability of good quality large single crystals. This book is intended for scientists belonging to the fields of solid state physics and chemistry as well as materials science. It should especially be useful to many graduate students involved in low dimensional oxides. It has been written by recognized specialists of low dimensional systems.

Book excerpt: A theoretical and experimental investigation of the oxidation of molybdenum to molybdenum trioxide at temperatures at which the trioxide is volatile has been carried out. A rate equation has been derived which includes the effects of mass-transfer parameters as well chemical parameters and is applicable to any situation for which a mass-transfer coefficient can be obtained. The derived equation has been applied to previously reported rate data taken under laboratory conditions using air and oxygen-helium mix-reported rate data taken under laboratory conditions using air and oxygen-helium mixtures flowing at low subsonic velocities, and a set of values for the activation energy of the oxidation of molybdenum has been obtained. The average of these values is 8.51 x 107 J-(kg-mole)−1 (20.3 kcal-(g-mole)−1) with a standard deviation of 2.1 percent. In addition, 32 molybdenum hemisphere-cylinder specimens have been oxidized in a Mach 2.1 heated airstream at a free-stream stagnation pressure of 1.07 x 106 N-m-−2 (10.5 atm) and free-stream stagnation temperatures from 1765°K to 2120°K. The stagnation-point surface temperature and recession rate were determined for each of the specimens. The observed recession rates were compared with the corresponding values predicted theoretically by the derived rate equation and agreement within a factor of about 2 was obtained for most specimens. However, a few specimens ignited, exhibiting recession rates much greater than those predicted theoretically. The high recession rates associated with ignition were found to be the result of a sharp rise in surface temperature which caused some melting of the specimens in addition to their normal oxidation.

It is used extensively in metallurgical applications. Because of their anti-wear properties, molybdenum compounds find wide applications as lubricants - particularly in extreme or hostile environmental situations. Many molybdates and heteropolymolybdates are white and therefore used as pigments. In addition, they are non-toxic and act as efficient corrosion inhibitors and smoke suppressants. Hydroprocessing of petroleum is one of the largest industries employing heterogeneous catalysts. Molybdenum catalysts have shown great promise in the liquefaction of coal and this may develop into one of its most important catalytic uses. The use of molybdenum compounds in homogeneous catalysis is also significant. Three important classes of molybdenum compounds in the solid state are reviewed, viz., oxides, sulphides and halides. The role of molybdenum in inorganic catalysis and enzymes receives prominent mention because of their impact on the progress of science and technology. Further biochemical and enzymic factors are discussed in separate chapters and their reaction to agriculture and animal husbandry. A new classification of covalent compounds which abandons the traditional oxidation state concept allows a powerful approach to the organisation of the complex and rich chemistry of molybdenum. Dramatic colour diagrams of abundances of molybdenum compounds provide broad insights into the important features and trends in the chemistry of molybdenum including reactivity and mechanism. Book excerpt: In situ generation of species for crystal growth in solution is a relatively undeveloped, but promising technique for preparation of solid state material. In this work a solvent, liquid sulfur, generates species in solution by chemical reduction at high temperatures. Evaluation of this high temperature reduction agent included measurements of qualitative and kinetic parameters for the reactions molybdic oxide - sulfur and tungstic oxide - sulfur as a function of temperature, time, and atmosphere. Temperature effects on reduction rate over the range 125 to 400C were markedly non-linear. Reduction products isolated include Mo(IV) oxide at 250C; Mo(IV) sulfide at 400C; W(IV) sulfide at 400C. The oxidation product detected whenever reduced species were found was sulfur(IV) oxide. Additional evidence of species WO(x)S(y) and polymeric sulfur was found. Results of this study indicate that liquid sulfur can serve as a straightforward reducing agent at high temperatures. The rate or extent of such reduction is easily controlled by varying thermal conditions or duration of reaction, and the products of such reductions may be readily isolated by solution techniques which remove unreacted sulfur.
