Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume I in this series reported the scientific results from our survey of the freshwater gastropods of United States Atlantic drainages, Georgia to the New York line. In the preface to that volume, I mentioned that during the 20 years over which the FWGNA Project has unfolded, I developed the habit of sending regular emails to an expanding list of collaborators, a practice which ultimately evolved into an internet blog. Those emails and blog posts have sometimes contained important supplementary information on the biology of the fascinating organisms toward which the FWGNA Project has been directed, as well as historical background, context, and rationale for various methodological and taxonomic decisions made in Volume I.Volume II collected 29 essays on the freshwater pulmonate gastropods. Here in Volume III we have assembled 37 essays on the evolutionary biology and systematics of the prosobranchs, published online between 2006 and 2019. These essays have been edited rather heavily from the form in which they were originally posted, in many cases, and re-ordered into subthemes. Essays 1 - 27 focus on the pleurocerid gastropods, my favorite group of organisms in the world, and essays 28 - 37 the hydrobioids, with topics of general evolutionary and systematic interest sprinkled throughout. Each essay opens with its date of publication, which is important to notice, because single subthemes can span multiple years, and my own thoughts have often evolved over time.We have deferred discussion of the Viviparids and the Ampullariids to Volume IV, which will be organized around ecological and biogeographical themes. This is partly due to space considerations, and partly because the most prominent elements of both families are invasive. It is probably unfair to tar higher taxa by the reputations of their most notorious species. For this I apologize.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using original Victorian prints, by collectable artist George Sowerby, marine biologist and author Paul Chambers has produced the first comprehensive guide to shells for over a century. The original prints are intricately detailed (much better than photographs which lack the exact detail of these drawings) and are a selling point in themselves but will be complemented by informative but accessible text, including families and to show what's edible, dangerous or belongs to mollusc families and in what part of the country they can be discovered. A delightful study by the leading expert and a must for anyone interested in learning more about shells - or who just enjoys beachcombing with the family.

Book Pacific Atlantic Mollusc Migration

Download or read book Pacific Atlantic Mollusc Migration written by Jón Eiríksson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-17 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume sheds new light on the marine fauna and geological setting of the Tjörnes Sequence, North Iceland, which is a classic site for the Pliocene and Pleistocene stratigraphy of the North Atlantic region. Readers will discover descriptions of new data collected by the editors over a period of over three decades on marine faunal assemblages and sedimentology available for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, as well as the tectonic and stratigraphical relationships on Tjörnes Peninsula. The book includes a comprehensive account of all the collections of marine fossil invertebrate macrofossils and foraminifera known to the editors from the Tjörnes Sequence. It is expected to elucidate sedimentological and faunal changes from relatively stable Pliocene conditions to highly variable and periodically harsh climatic conditions of recurring Quaternary glaciations. The distribution, recent or fossil, of various species is recorded and pertinent ecological and biological features are also discussed. The Tjörnes Sequence records the Neogene migration of Pacific species into the North Atlantic. Researchers in geology, climate science, environmental science and earth science will find this book particularly valuable.

Book A Student s Guide to the Seashore

Download or read book A Student s Guide to the Seashore written by J.D. Fish and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one time or another, we have all been drawn by the fascination of the seashore. For the holiday maker, the relaxing day by the sea often turns out to be a most rewarding foray among rock pools and dense canopies of seaweed; for naturalists and students, the shore is one of the most challenging habitats. Whatever our interests and expertise, one of our first objectives when faced with the diversity of plant and animal life on the shore is to name the individual specimens and we quickly learn that this can be a difficult, though rewarding, occupation. Once an organism has been identified, a number of questions naturally follow. What is its life-cycle? How does it feed and reproduce? How long does it live? The answers to such questions give an insight into the lives of the plants and animals of the shore and are one of the first steps in an understand ing of the complexity of the shore environment. However, the information required to answer such questions is not always easily accessible and even when it is known it is often scattered in various books and research journals making it difficult and time consuming to find. Although a variety of identification keys and guides is available, some designed for the specialist, others for the amateur, such texts generally give little, if any, information on the biology of the organisms.
