Book Molecular Mechanisms of Cardiac Hypertrophy and Heart Failure

Download or read book Molecular Mechanisms of Cardiac Hypertrophy and Heart Failure written by Thomas Von Lueder and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heart failure (HF) is a major cause of death worldwide. Remodeling of the heart plays an important role in the development of HF. Activiation of the vasoconstrictor endothelin-1 (ET-1) in HF has multiple adverse effects on the cardiovascular system. Dr. von Lueder et. al. identified the lungs as a major source of increased ET-1 levels in a HF model. Pulmonary congestion increased the number of inflammatory cells as well as ET-1 production. When HF animals were treated with a macrophage blocker in follow-up experiments, ET-1 levels were reduced and, importantly, cardiac function improved. Important aspects of cardiac function are controlled by G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR). GPCR signaling is shut off by a small group of enzymes called GRKs. In genetically-engineered mice (GRK3ct), GRK3 inhibition enhanced cardiac function, presumably through continuous α-adrenergic signaling. Importantly, GRK3ct mice were prevented from HF when subjected to sustained severe cardiac stress for up to three months. The thesis by Lueder et. al. provides new mechanistic insights into the development of cardiac hypertrophy and HF and may yield novel therapeutic targets.

Download or read book Heart Failure written by Gregory R. Bock and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heart failure is the main cause of death and disability in the industrialized world. There is a major need for novel therapeutics for prevention and reversal of cardiac pathology associated with heart failure and cardiac enlargement. Over recent years, dramatic progress has been made in unravelling the cellular circuitry involved in cardiac failure, as well as in normal cardiac growth, development and apoptosis. This work has revealed new and unexpected therapeutic targets in the heart. In addition, advances in understanding the role of stem cells in cardiac physiology have suggested strategies for cardiac repair and regeneration once thought impossible. This book describes the work of leading investigators studying the basic mechanisms of cardiac growth, function and dysfunction. There are also exciting contributions from researchers developing novel therapeutic strategies for cardiac disease. The unique feature is the discussions amongst the contributors, which always return to the same basic problem: how can new data from biological studies be used to design novel therapies for the treatment of cardiac dysfunction following myocardial infarction, hypertension and other disorders? With its strong emphasis on translational research, this book will appeal to both scientists and clinicians interested in diminishing the impact of the current epidemic of cardiac diseases.

Book Biochemistry of Cardiovascular Dysfunction in Obesity

Download or read book Biochemistry of Cardiovascular Dysfunction in Obesity written by Paramjit S. Tappia and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-03 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obesity is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adults as well as in obese children. This book will provide a description of the impact of obesity on the cardiovascular system and increased predisposition to CVD. It will identify the major biochemical mechanisms that lead to the occurrence of myocardial abnormalities and vascular alterations in obesity. We will also have some discussion on the biochemistry of the so-called obesity paradox in relation to CVD. The contributors to this book are international experts on obesity and associated cardiovascular complications. This book is also uniquely positioned as it focuses on the biochemistry of obesity-induced cardiovascular dysfunction. There are 20 chapters in 2 different parts in this book, comprising of Part A: Pathophysiology of Cardiovascular Complications in Obesity (11 chapters) and Part B: Modification of Cardiovascular Dysfunction in obesity (9 chapters). The intent of this volume is to provide current and basic understanding of the biochemical mechanisms of obesity induced cardiovascular dysfunction that will be of value not only to cardiologists and other allied health professionals, but will also stimulate and motivate biomedical researchers and scientists to find the way to prevent the epidemic of obesity associated cardiovascular abnormalities. Furthermore, this book will serve as a highly useful resource for medical students, fellows, residents and graduate students with an interest in the cardiovascular system. In summary, this book covers a broad range of biochemical mechanisms of obesity-induced cardiovascular complications. We hope that the reader will understand that obesity is linked to an increase in the risk and occurrence of fatal CVD. Furthermore, the underlying message presented in the book is that the cause of obesity related disorders is complex and that understanding the biochemistry of cardiovascular dysfunction may contribute to the development of novel interventions for the prevention and treatment of obesity associated comorbidities.
