Download or read book Optical Constants of Crystalline and Amorphous Semiconductors written by Sadao Adachi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the refractive indices and absorption coefficients of semiconductors is especially import in the design and analysis of optical and optoelectronic devices. The determination of the optical constants of semiconductors at energies beyond the fundamental absorption edge is also known to be a powerful way of studying the electronic energy-band structures of the semiconductors. The purpose of this book is to give tabulated values and graphical information on the optical constants of the most popular semiconductors over the entire spectral range. This book presents data on the optical constants of crystalline and amorphous semiconductors. A complete set of the optical constants are presented in this book. They are: the complex dielectric constant (E=e.+ieJ, complex refractive index (n*=n+ik), absorption coefficient (a.), and normal-incidence reflectivity (R). The semiconductor materials considered in this book are the group-IV elemental and binary, llI-V, IT-VI, IV-VI binary semiconductors, and their alloys. The reader will fmd the companion book "Optical Properties of Crystalline and Amorphous Semiconductors: Materials and Fundamental Principles" useful since it emphasizes the basic material properties and fundamental prinCiples.

Download or read book The Physics and Fabrication of Microstructures and Microdevices written by Michael J. Kelly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: les Houches This Winter School on "The Physics and Fabrication of Microstructures" originated with a European industrial decision to investigate in some detail the potential of custom-designed microstructures for new devices. Beginning in 1985, GEC and THOMSON started a collaboration on these subjects, supported by an ESPRIT grant from the Commission of the European Com munity. To the outside observer of the whole field, it appears clear that the world effort is very largely based in the United States and Japan. It also appears that cooperation and dissemination of results are very well organised outside Europe and act as a major influence on the development of new concepts and devices. In Japan, a main research programme of the Research and Development for Basic Technology for Future Industries is focused on "Future Electron Devices". In Japan and in the United States, many workshops are organised annually in order to bring together the major specialists in industry and academia, allowing fast dissemination of advances and contacts for setting up cooperative efforts.
Download or read book Atomic Layer Epitaxy written by T. Suntola and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed study of the Atomic Layer Epitaxy technique (ALE), its development, current and potential applications. The rapid development of coating technologies over the last 25 years has been instrumental in generating interest and expertise in thin films of materials, and indeed the market for thin film coatings is currently £3 billion with projected annual growth of 20 to 30% [1]. ALE is typical of thin-film processes in that problems in the processing or preparation of good quality epitaxial films have been overcome, resulting in better performance, novel applications of previously unsuitable materials, and the development of new devices. Many materials exhibit interesting and novel properties when prepared as thin films and doped. Vapour-deposited coatings and films are used extensively in the semiconductor and related industries for making single devices, integrated circuits, microwave hybrid integrated circuits, compact discs, solar reflective glazing, fibre optics, photo voltaic cells, sensors, displays, and many other products in general, everyday use. The ALE technique was developed by a research team led by Tuomo Suntola, working for Instrumentarium Oy in Finland. The key members of this team were lorma Antson, Arto Pakkala and Sven Lindfors. In 1977, the research team moved from Instrumentarium to Lohja Corporation, where they continued the development of ALE and were granted a patent in the same year. By 1980, the technique was sufficiently advanced that they were producing flat-screen electroluminescent displays based on a manganese-doped zinc sulphide layer.

Download or read book Device and Circuit Cryogenic Operation for Low Temperature Electronics written by Francis Balestra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-05-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Device and Circuit Cryogenic Operation for Low Temperature Electronics is a first in reviewing the performance and physical mechanisms of advanced devices and circuits at cryogenic temperatures that can be used for many applications. The first two chapters cover bulk silicon and SOI MOSFETs. The electronic transport in the inversion layer, the influence of impurity freeze-out, the special electrical properties of SOI structures, the device reliability and the interest of a low temperature operation for the ultimate integration of silicon down to nanometer dimensions are described. The next two chapters deal with Silicon-Germanium and III-V Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors, as well as III-V High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMT). The basic physics of the SiGe HBT and its unique cryogenic capabilities, the optimization of such bipolar devices, and the performance of SiGe HBT BiCMOS technology at liquid nitrogen temperature are examined. The physical effects in III-V semiconductors at low temperature, the HEMT and HBT static, high frequency and noise properties, and the comparison of various cooled III-V devices are also addressed. The next chapter treats quantum effect devices made of silicon materials. The major quantum effects at low temperature, quantum wires, quantum dots as well as single electron devices and applications are investigated. The last chapter overviews the performances of cryogenic circuits and their applications. The low temperature properties and performance of inverters, multipliers, adders, operational amplifiers, memories, microprocessors, imaging devices, circuits and systems, sensors and read-out circuits are analyzed. Device and Circuit Cryogenic Operation for Low Temperature Electronics is useful for researchers, engineers, Ph.D. and M.S. students working in the field of advanced electron devices and circuits, new semiconductor materials, and low temperature electronics and physics.

Download or read book Functionally Graded Materials written by Y. Miyamoto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven years have elapsed since Dr. Renee Ford, editor-in-chief of Materials Technology, first suggested to me to publish a book on Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs). She said that the FGM concept, then largely unknown outside of Japan and a relatively few laboratories elsewhere, would be of great interest to everyone working in the materials field because of its potentially universal applicability. There was no book about FGMs in English at that time, although the number of research papers, review articles, and FGM conference proceedings had been increasing yearly. We discussed what the book should cover, and decided it should present a comprehensive description from basic theory to the most recent applications of FGMs. This would make it useful both as an introduction to FGMs for those simply curious about what this new materials field was all about, and also as a textbook for researchers, engineers, and graduate students in various material fields. The FGM Forum in Japan generously offered to support this publication program. is very difficult for an individual author to write a book that Because it covers such a wide range of various aspects of many different materials, I invited more than 30 eminent materials scientists throughout the world, who were associated with FGM research, to contribute selected topics. I also asked several leading researchers in this field to edit selected chapters: Dr. Barry H. Rabin, then at the U. S.
