Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boiling liquid magma or super hard matter? Inconceivably high temperatures or cold neighboring on absolute zero? What are the depths of the Earth like? What mysteries does its mantle conceal? Science cannot as yet give the exact answers to these questions, though myriads of different hypotheses have been put forth. This is a fascinating book about the romance of prospecting, about the pertinacious investigations of geologists studying the inside of our planet. The author, Professor Anatoly Malakhov, D.Sc. Book The Encyclopedia of Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology written by Donald Bowes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1990-02-28 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring over 250 contributions from more than 100 earth scientists from 18 countries, The Encyclopedia of Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology deals with the nature and genesis of igneous rocks that have crystallized from molten magma, and of metamorphic rocks that are the products of re-crystallization associated with increases in temperature and pressure, mainly at considerable depths in the Earth's crust. Entries range from alkaline rocks to zeolite facies - providing information on the mineralogical, chemical and textural characters of rock types, the development of concepts and the present state of knowledge across the spectrum of igneous and metamorphic petrology, together with extensive lists of both commonly used and little used terms and bibliographies.

Book The Possibility of Determining the Depth of the Mohorovicic Discontinuity for a Three layer Earth s Crust

Download or read book The Possibility of Determining the Depth of the Mohorovicic Discontinuity for a Three layer Earth s Crust written by I. Sh Rakhimova and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two opposite points of view about the nature of the surface dividing the earth's crust from the mantle, i.e. the Mohorovicic discontinuity. Some investigators think that the reason for the abrupt change of seismic velocities and density on the Moho is a difference in the chemical composition of the lower part of the earth's crust and upper mantle--basaltic in the earth's crust and peridotite or dunite in the mantle. Others regard it as a boundary on which a phase transition of the basaltic into a denser modification of it of the type of eclogite occurs. If the phase nature of the Moho is taken as a basis, it is possible to arrive at a quantitative solution of the problem of determination of the thickness of the basaltic layer or the depth of occurrence of the Moho as a function of the depths of the sedimentary and granitic layers for the continental sections of the earth's crust. That becomes possible because the position of the Moho is determined by values of pressure and temperature, the distribution of which at a given thickness of the crust can be established. (Author).

Book Surge Tectonics A New Hypothesis of Global Geodynamics

Download or read book Surge Tectonics A New Hypothesis of Global Geodynamics written by Arthur A. Meyerhoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TECTONlCS AND PHYSICS Geology, although rooted in the laws of physics, rarely has been taught in a manner designed to stress the relations between the laws and theorems of physics and the postulates of geology. The same is true of geophysics, whose specialties (seismology, gravimetIy, magnetics, magnetotellurics) deal only with the laws that govern them, and not with those that govern geology's postulates. The branch of geology and geophysics called tectonophysics is not a formalized discipline or subdiscipline, and, therefore, has no formal laws or theorems of its own. Although many recent books claim to be textbooks in tectonophysics, they are not; they are books designed to explain one hypothesis, just as the present book is designed to explain one hypothesis. The textbook that comes closest to being a textbook of tectonophysics is Peter 1. Wyllie's (1971) book, The Dynamic Earth. Teachers, students, and practitioners of geology since the very beginning of earth science teaching have avoided the development of a rigorous (but not rigid) scientific approach to tectonics, largely because we earth scientists have not fully understood the origin of the features with which we are dealing. This fact is not at all surprising when one considers that the database for hypotheses and theories of tectonics, particularly before 1960, has been limited to a small part of the exposed land area on the Earth's surface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic and Geography of India for UPSC Civil Services Prelims Exam 2020 General Studies Paper-1. We have covered basic geography topics which are very useful for Preliminary examination. Geography is so vast in its syllabus that it covers the most section of the General Studies for the IAS Prelims Exam. The geography is scientific in its orientation and hence the candidates having Arts background find it very difficult to prepare the geography for the IAS Prelims Exam. But, the candidates cannot escape or overlook the geography because there are various aspects of geography which enormously helps in the overall General Studies Preparations. For example, the economy of our country is heavily dependent on the Monsoon but Monsoon is a geographical phenomenon. Moreover, we are talking about the demographic dividends but we can study the aspects of population growth under Population Geography and related avenues under Human Geography. Book THE NATURE OF THE MOHOROVICIC DISCONTINUITY Mo ho Chieh mien Ti Hsing chih

Download or read book THE NATURE OF THE MOHOROVICIC DISCONTINUITY Mo ho Chieh mien Ti Hsing chih written by Jung-sheng Tseng and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper discusses the various theories on the nature of the Mohorovicic discontinuity and the difficulties encountered by the phase-change hypothesis. By examining the velocity distribution data recently obtained by use of seismic body and surface waves, the following conclusions can be made: (1) The Mohorovicic discontinuity, either under the continents of the oceans, cannot be interpreted as a surface of phase transition. (2) The chemical composition of the upper mantle is not homogeneous in the vertical direction. The low-velocity layer in the upper mantle is probably caused by a change in composition rather than by the temperature effects. (3) The top surface of the asthenospheric low-velocity layer is deeper under the oceans than under the continents. (4) The chemical composition of the upper mantle, according to the data of radioactive measurements, may be some mixtures of eclogites or other ultra-basic rocks, their change of velocity due to temperature effects being very small.
