Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries the history of the Mohawk Valley has been shaped by the complex relationships among the valley’s native inhabitants, the Mohawk Indians, and its colonists, starting with the Dutch. In Mohawk Country collects for the first time the principal documentary narratives that reveal the full scope of this Mohawk-settler interaction. Some of the sources have never before been translated into English, and several have not been previously published. Of those works that had been published, nearly all are out of print. The Mohawk location near Albany, New York put them at the center of transactions between the Iroquois and European colonists. (The Mohawk were one of the constituent nations within the League of the Iroquois.) These narratives-written by Dutch merchants, French Jesuit missionaries, English soldiers, romantic European travelers, and other literate observers-provide often biased but always fascinating accounts of the Mohawk and their valley. The reader is treated to over two centuries of history, starting with the arrival of the Dutch in the early seventeenth century to the planning of the Erie Canal in the early nineteenth century. These records bring to life the rapid changes experienced by both the Mohawk and their European neighbors. Wars, catastrophic epidemics, and the diplomacy of nearly two centuries are all well represented in this volume. Fascinating cultural differences are also unearthed: the French, for example, dealt with the Mohawk much differently than the Dutch or the English. Just as importantly, these writings reveal—from the unique perspectives of the observer—the Mohawk’s struggle to retain their culture in the midst of evolving political, social, and physical environments.

Book Three Sixteenth century Mohawk Iroquois Village Sites

Download or read book Three Sixteenth century Mohawk Iroquois Village Sites written by Robert E. Funk and published by New York State Museum. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological excavations at the Garoga, Klock and Smith-Pagerie Sites in the mid-Mohawk River Valley, New York are presented in this new volume published by the New York State Museum. These three sixteenth-century Mohawk sites were excavated by State Museum researchers under the direction of the late State Archaeologist Robert E. Funk. Each site was a large Mohawk Iroquois village complete with longhouses, palisades, and once occupied by hundreds of people. The extensive excavations revealed the settlement plan of each village, exposed dozens of fire hearths, storage pits, and other features, and recovered thousands of artifacts. This volume presents the results of these excavations including a description and analysis of the settlement patterns at each site and a detailed study and comparison of the large artifact assemblages.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mohawk Valley: Its Legends and Its History The Mohawk Valley, with its stirring scenes connected with the French and Indian wars and the War of the Revolution, has been sadly neglected by historians and writers of fiction. Yet within its borders have been enacted tragic events and heroic endeavors that helped materially in crowning with victory the efforts and sacrifices of the patriots of the Revolution. There is no section of pleasant valley-land, of lake-and forest-dotted wilderness, of rushing streams and cultivated fields, east of the Mississippi, that surpasses in its wealth of scenery this bit of the Empire State. It is natural that such a land should be rich in romance both legendary and historical. From Schenectady to Rome, every town has its romantic story of the early wars; every bit of woodland has its wealth of prehistoric legend. The book, after all, is only a written record of oft-told tales. But such tales hitherto were widely scattered. Some are familiar to every American boy who has read The Last of the Mohieans and its companion stories; some may be heard from the lips of gray-haired citizens of many villages, who retell the tales their grandfathers told them of frontier fights and Indian massacres; and the musty archives of every Valley town have their own story of war and sacrifice and the struggles of early border life. This work deals with the period embraced between the years 1609 and 1780. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
