Book The Great Doctrines of the Bible

Download or read book The Great Doctrines of the Bible written by William Evans, Ph. D. and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-09 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basics for Christian faith: A well-organized examination of ten major doctrines, including 80 subjects by topical listing. Designed to supplement personal Bible study. "Instead of doubting everything that can be doubted, let us rather doubt nothing until we are compelled to doubt." CONTENTS THE DOCTRINE OF GOD THE DOCTRINE OF JESUS CHRIST THE DOCTRINE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THE DOCTRINE OF MAN THE DOCTRINES OF SALVATION Repentance--Faith--Regeneration--Justification--Adoption--Sanctification--Prayer THE DOCTRINE OF THE CHURCH THE DOCTRINE OF THE SCRIPTURES THE DOCTRINE OF ANGELS THE DOCTRINE OF SATAN THE DOCTRINE OF THE LAST THINGS The Second Coming of Christ--The Resurrection--The Judgment--The Destiny of the Wicked--The Reward of the Righteous The demand for this book has come from the students in the class room who have listened to these lectures on the Great Doctrines of the Bible, and have desired and requested that they be put into permanent form for the purpose of further study and reference. This volume is prepared, therefore, primarily, but not exclusively, for the student, and with his needs in mind. The doctrines herein treated are dealt with from the standpoint of Biblical rather than Dogmatic theology. This is evident from the plan which is followed in the work, namely, to gather together all the Scripture passages dealing with the subject under consideration, and from them choose a required number that may be called representative; then seek to understand the meaning of these references by the study of the text itself as well as its context and parallel passages; and finally, from the selected proof-texts, formulate the doctrinal teaching, and place such results under appropriate headings. The doctrines of God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are more fully dealt with than the doctrines which follow. This is especially true of the doctrine of God. The reason for this is to set forth the method pursued in these studies, and to give a pattern for the study of the doctrines to follow. It is intended that the doctrines of this book should be studied side by side with the open Bible. It is for this reason that many of the Scripture references are indicated by chapter and verse only. There must be constant reference to the Scriptures themselves.

Book SCM Core Text Christian Doctrine

Download or read book SCM Core Text Christian Doctrine written by Mike Higton and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SCM Core Text: Christian Doctrine offers an up-to-date, accessible introduction to one of the core subjects of theology. Written for second and third-year university students, it shows that Christian Doctrine is not a series of impossible claims to be clung to with blind faith. Mike Higton argues that it is, rather, a set of claims that emerge in the midst of Christian life, as Christian communities try to make enough sense of their lives and of their world to allow them to carry on. Christian communities have made sense of their own life, and the life of the wider world in which they are set, as life created by God to share in God's own life. They have seen themselves and their world as laid hold of God's life in Jesus of Nazareth, and as having the Spirit of God's own life actively at work within them. This book explores these and other central Christian doctrines, and in each case, shows how the doctrine makes sense, and how it is woven into Christian life. It will help readers to see what sense it might make to say the things that Christian doctrine says, and how that doctrine might affect the way that one looks at everything: the natural world, gossip, culture, speaking in tongues, politics, dieting, human freedom, love, High Noon, justice, computers, racism, the novels of Jane Austin, parenthood, death and fashion.
