Book excerpt: The fishery sector is important from Indian economy view point as it contributes a source of income to a number of fishermen and has huge export potential. The systems and technology used in aquaculture has developed rapidly in the last fifty years. They vary from very simple facilities like family ponds for domestic consumption in tropical countries to high technology systems like intensive closed systems for export production. Much of the technology used in aquaculture is relatively simple, often based on small modifications that improve the growth and survival rates of the target species. Nowadays, the fish and fisheries industry is one of the fastest growing international commodity markets globally. Guaranteeing an adequate supply to this international market requires hundreds of thousands of fishing vessels and fish farms, as well as tens of thousands of fish processing workers, wholesalers and retailers in countries spread all over the world. The fishery sector thus generates employment and income for millions of people and in one of the major fields to venture. A wide range of aspects of fresh water aquaculture such as selection of species of fish and shellfish, construction and preparation of various types of fish ponds, control of aquatic weeds and predators, production of seed fish and their transportation, fish nutrition and fish diseases and their control pertaining to composite fish culture, air breathing fish culture etc. have been dealt with a length for easy adoption. The major contents of the book are classification of fishes, general characters of fishes, techniques in fish identification, cold water fisheries of India, physical and chemical properties of fishery water, chemical constituents of fish, economic importance of fishes, fish in relation to human health, construction of fish farms, etc. In this book you can find all the basic information required on the fundamental aspects of the fisheries and aquaculture technology with detailed information of their applications a wide variety of industrial processes etc. The book is very useful for research scholars, technocrats, institutional libraries and entrepreneurs who want to enter into the field of aquaculture technology. Book Decency of primary occupations in the Indian fishing industry

Download or read book Decency of primary occupations in the Indian fishing industry written by Meenakshi Rajeev and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian fisheries are moving from artisanal to capitalistic methods of production. As this transformation takes place, many traditional fishers are forced to seek employment on trawlers and other fishing vessels owing to their lack of a capital base to purchase modern vessels themselves. Competition among trawlers can lead to cost reducing strategies that lower the quality of working conditions for those employed in these vessels. This paper is an attempt to assess the working conditions of these workers through the use of indicators developed by the International Labour Office in the context of decent work. By utilizing data collected in the National Sample Survey Organization’s (NSSO) 68th round survey of employment and unemployment, we find that there are some areas in which decency of work is lacking. The level of job security is highly inadequate among most workers in fisheries. There is a marked absence of women in the labour pool, especially in unskilled tasks. Child labour, while not a cause for alarming concern, exists to a minor degree in the industry. Furthermore, freshwater fishing was found to afford lower standards of work than marine fishing. Regulation and policy action are called into requirement by these observations.

Book Unravelling Supply Chain Networks of Fisheries in India

Download or read book Unravelling Supply Chain Networks of Fisheries in India written by Meenakshi Rajeev and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on the fisheries sector in India, through primary surveys as well as secondary literature, brings out various nuances of the sector and its trade opportunities, the complexities surrounding the supply chain of fish, as well as the evolution of its marketing channels. A distinctive feature of this book is that it carries out a comprehensive mapping of the fisheries supply chain, by taking into account both marine and freshwater fish. It identifies various players, especially traders who take part in the product flow, irrespective of the impact each of them has on the value provided to the end customer. While members of the supply chain include all individuals or organisations between whom interaction takes place, directly or indirectly from the point of production to consumption, this study also distinguishes between primary and peripheral members to make a complex network more manageable. Moreover, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of the emerging marketing channels- both organised and unorganised- in this highly perishable food segment. It provides important insights into the current scenario, focusing on the emergence of newer forms of marketing such as multinationals and e-retailing, while highlighting how traditional forms such as ‘mom-and-pop’ shops have continued to sustain, despite the challenges they face. The findings from India are also compared to global experiences of other fish producing and exporting countries such as Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Thailand to offer a comparison of the differences and similarities in the supply chains of various countries. The book provides important takeaways for researchers and PhD scholars working in the area of fisheries as well as supply chains. Since this book is based on field visits to different parts of the country it brings out the ground realities along with interesting insights and important policy implications for the sector, and should, therefore, appeal to policymakers as well.

Book excerpt: The e-book titled “Mukul Asher on Economic Reasoning and Public Policy: Case Studies from India", edited by V.K. Ahuja & Ajay B. Sonawane is a collection of recent columns authored or co-authored by Professor Mukul Asher on applying economic reasoning to public policies in India. As India progresses towards USD 5 trillion economy, and as it addresses its socio-economic challenges, public policy discussions which are based on appropriate context-specific analytical frameworks and concepts, using empirical evidence in a judicious manner to advance public interest, have become vital. The book also helps fill a gap in the literature as analysis of India’s Post-2014 public policies and initiatives have not received deserved interest from the academics, think tanks, and researchers. This e-book represents a small step towards redressing this imbalance. The DSPPG plans to publish a series of books on a diverse set of public policy issues India, with a view to improve the quality of public policy education and dialogue in India. The present e-book is first in the series. All books are to be uploaded on the Website of Delhi School of Public Policy and Governance (DSPPG), University of Delhi and made freely available to all. Book Developing India s Strategic Response to the Global Debate on Fisheries Subsidies CMA Publication No 236

Download or read book Developing India s Strategic Response to the Global Debate on Fisheries Subsidies CMA Publication No 236 written by Samar K Datta and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The weak property rights regime governing the world's marine resources as well as the wide-spread large scale subsidization of the fisheries industry has led to serious depletion of global fish stocks. Against this backdrop, taking cognizance of developing country goals and concerns, the Fourth Ministerial Conference of the WTO held in Doha in 2001 mandated that negotiations over fisheries subsidies, formerly subject to the disciplines of the Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures, be completed by 2005. In view of this development, a country like India with its vast and versatile fisheries resources has to take stock of the state of its fisheries sector, and develop a strategic response to the global debate on fisheries subsidies. This book aims to initiate that process. It begins by providing an overview of the current state of subsidization of the fisheries sector, both domestic and international, under various alternate definitions of fisheries subsidies. It then focuses on the domestic scenario, highlighting the Indian experience with fisheries subsidies and property rights regimes across both inland and marine sectors via the case method, and investigates the necessity and sufficiency of subsidies vis-à-vis an appropriate property rights framework in developing the domestic fisheries sector and resource base in a sustainable manner. Attention is then turned to the international scenario, with a review of selected international case studies which can inform domestic subsidy and property rights issues. This is followed by an analysis of the country submissions of the various major fishing nations in order to identify India's natural allies and competitors in international negotiations. The concluding chapter brings the pieces together. It first outlines a program of reforms to rectify the deficiencies in the existing domestic property rights and fisheries subsidy regimes, on the basis of intensive interactions with all sectoral stakeholders. Subsequently, it suggests negotiating strategies for India in forthcoming WTO meetings. An epilogue sums up recent developments and issues.

Book Fisheries Development and Management in India 1785 1986

Download or read book Fisheries Development and Management in India 1785 1986 written by Nune Subba Rao and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1989 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries play an important role in the economy of nations bordering the sea and this is especially true in a populous country like India where a large majority continues to live below the poverty line. Sea fishing has been an occupation with the coastal people of India since time immemorial forming an integral part of the maritime heritage. Machanisation has been introduced into the marine fishing with a view to exploit the fisheries potential all along the Indian coastline of 6,500 km by overcoming the deficiencies of the centuries old traditional fishing technology and to augment fish production with a higher fishing effort and also to raise the income levels and living standards of fishermen. The present book, based on the author’s doctoral dissertation, made a bold and pioneering attempt to evaluate the costs and earnings of mechanised and traditional boats for determining their relative operational efficiency and to examine intensively the effects of mechanisation on employment, income levels, consumption pattern and levels of living of fishermen and their social implications. While analysing the merits of the new fishing technology and also the reactions of different groups of fishermen to mechanisation, he spotlights the shortsightedness in the implementation of the programme of mechanisation resulting in a host of negative effects which have implications and also sets forth the valuable lessons which Indian experiences have to offer to the densely populated littoral nations in the Third World. To ensure enduring benefits to the vast majority of marine fishermen, the thesis underscores, among numerous other remedies the need for the provision of an intermediary technology, the need for the institutional support and marketing network and the need for the management of fisheries resources. It also calls for the policies to bring about socio-economic development of the fishing community on par with the rest of the society. All in all, a genuine contribution to knowledge of `grassroots' situations that will have enduring value and that can be useful in both academic and policy-formation circles.

Download or read book Fisheries Science written by R. Santhanam and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 1990 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The annual production of fish in India is about 1.5 million tons including 0.14 million tons through aquaculture and it is estimated that about 10 million tons of fish may be required to meet the demand of the increasing human population. It is felt that new techniques have to be developed for the production of fish through aquaculture and capture fisheries besides creating an awareness among the public about fisheries science. Although several books on the individual aspects of Fisheries Science are available from abroad, a comprehensive compendium incorporating modern techniques relating to Indian conditions is lacking. In order to fill up this long felt gap this publication is being brought out. The present publication, a compilation of mainly published articles in leading English Dailies and Magazines has three parts. The first part deals with important culture practices relating to freshwater and brackishwater systems.
