Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HE playing of die viola has been one of the sadly neglected arts. This is all the more incredible T when we realize, as we all do today, that the instrument with its rich, mellow tone should always have been regarded as one of the most ideally gratifying mediums of musical expression when played by the accomplished artist. The insignificant position that the viola had occupied in the field of solo instru ments in the past undoubtedly was responsible for the apparent neglect in its artistic exploitation to such a degree that in nearly every symphony orchestra throughout the world the viola section (with the none tor-frequent exception of the principal player) was composed of cast-offs from the second violins, who, al ready too old to perform satisfactorily on their respective instruments, were relegated to pass their remain ing years of service playing viola. Happily, we have a different picture of the orchestral viola sections in most of our modern symphonic bodies today. Virile young players are adopting the viola as their major instrument, and that sly, well known German sobriquet, Pensions-instrument, surely is deserved no longer. The viola should be studied and played by young artists who especially adapt themselves to the serious presentation of the instrument as aseparate and independent medium of expression, which requires fully as much intelligent, conscientious, and diligent application to achieve noteworthy results as any orches tral instrument.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a composer and a musician, The Contemporary Violin offers a unique menu of avant-garde musical possibilities that both performers and composers will enjoy exploring. Allen and Patricia Strange's comprehensive study critically examines extended performance techniques found in the violin literature of the latter half of the twentieth century. Drawing from both published and private manuscripts, the authors present extended performance options for the acoustic, modified, electric, and MIDI violin, with signal processing and computer-related techniques, and include more than 400 notated examples. The authors begin with bowing techniques and proceed systematically through other aspects of string playing, including MIDI technologies. Their correspondence and research with many performers and composers, the book's extensive score and text bibliography, and the discography of more than 130 recordings make The Contemporary Violin a valuable contemporary music reference and guide. An additional benefit is its listing of Internet resources that will keep the reader up to date with recent developments in contemporary performance and composition. First published by UC Press, 2001.

Book excerpt: `In all areas of human endeavour, time and again an individual appears who, due to a multitude of personal attributes, elevates his or her field to a hitherto unknown height. Such an individual was William Primrose. His name and the viola are synonymous.' Janos Starker This unique book is the result of a series of conversations with Primrose in the last years before his death in 1982. David Dalton describes how he came to the great artist armed with every question he could think of pertaining to performing on and teaching the viola. The lively dialogue contains a wealth of illuminating advice for the student on the technicalities of playing the viola. It is, however, far more than a technical guide. The two violists discuss the unique position of their instrument - `an instrument without tradition' is Primrose's bald description. They cover the topic of repertoire with fascinating insights into the performance of the great concertos by Bartók and Walton, with which Primrose was so closely associated. Still more invaluable advice emerges from the discussion of Primrose's own experience, on the art of performance, on demeanour on stage, on competitions, on recordings, and on preparing for a career. The book is a tribute to one of the greatest artists of this century.
