Book Challenge for Leaders

Download or read book Challenge for Leaders written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although organizations cannot be fully prepared for the retirement of the Boomer generation due to the staffing shortages facing the workforce, they can implement knowledge transfer and succession planning activities by assessing internal talent, identifying gaps, and implementing plans to prepare for the next generation of leaders and the impact the generational transition has on the workplace. The author discusses the challenges facing organizations with the majority of the Boomer generation exiting leadership positions and entering into retirement, leaving potential voids within organizations if no action is taken. Strategies are suggested to help organizations to prepare for the exit of one generation and the entry into leadership to another. These include: internal benchmarking, creating a culture where knowledge sharing is encouraged and rewarded, identifying high potential talent, conducting succession planning activities, and accelerating development by implementing action learning programs aligned with business strategies, and holding leadership accountable to those plans. The author also discusses challenges and barriers as well as the potential impact of not having a plan in place at all."--Abstract.

Book Succession Planning in Nonprofit Organizations and Transitioning Millennials Entering Into Leadership Positions

Download or read book Succession Planning in Nonprofit Organizations and Transitioning Millennials Entering Into Leadership Positions written by Kanesha Wingo and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the past decade, leadership has changed. The faces of leadership are changing into a new group of leaders with different strategies for leadership. Millennials have entered the workforce and are aged to enter into leadership positions. Millennial leadership will change the culture and operation of the workforce because of the unique way they prefer to operate as employees. Research has found that most millennials are entering the workforce while baby boomers are leaving the workforce and opening leadership and executive positions (Doyle, 2014). It also finds that millennials are the most difficult group of employees to recruit and retain. This can become a challenge when looking for employees to fill executive roles or implement them into succession plans. The need for leadership positions to be filled by competent and qualified employees are essential for all organizations. This need is fulfilled by succession planning. Succession planning is a plan that places a qualified incumbent into a leadership role in the event of succession. The plan would include an analysis based on the needs, goals, and strategies of the organization (HR Planning: Succession planning, 2015). In non-profit organizations the need for succession planning is very important. In small nonprofits with less than 50 employees it is recommended to find talent from within the organization. This allows new leadership to become installed with the same goals and a clear understanding of the mission and vision. An analysis of existing research and of my own qualitative research finds that most nonprofit organizations do not have an effective succession plan in place. It also finds that nonprofits are not prepared for millennial leaders. A face to face interview with a leader at XYZ Corporation finds that there is a method in place in the event of succession. They also mention that there is not a model or policy in place to allow continuity. A survey monkey survey distributed to nonprofit employees finds that many are not aware of what succession planning is or have not heard about it within their organization.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to planning for CEO succession, from the experts at RHR As the demands from stakeholders for consummate leadership and good governance from a company's board of directors, its CEO, and its executive team increase, how the process of CEO succession is carried out has become more critical than ever before. Yet, over the past several years, a growing number of CEOs have failed early in their terms, often with devastating consequences to their companies and stockholders. By far the most common problem is a lack of ownership of the CEO succession process. Inside CEO Succession provides businesses, leaders, and boards with the strategies they need to execute their responsibilities with a heightened level of professionalism and ensure the sustained success of the companies they serve. Written by Dr. Thomas J. Saporito, CEO of RHR International, and Dr. Paul Winum, Senior Partner of RHR International, the lessons of Inside CEO Succession are rooted in RHR's long-standing history of bringing expert knowledge, experience, advice, and counsel to the issues related to CEO succession. The culmination of RHR's 65 years of experience providing expert counsel to the boards of directors of hundreds of companies, it explains how ego, role-relationships, power, and human dynamics associated with relinquishing leadership, preparing successors, and ceding power and authority to other people create undetected problems in the succession process and ultimately cause many CEOs to fail early in their tenures. Distills RHR's 65 years of experience helping businesses deal with CEO succession into one practical resource Presents strategies to enable boards to understand their role in succession planning and how to source leadership that best fits their organization's culture and requirements Brings together business acumen and psychological insight to help readers better prepare for more effective CEO succession To be successful, CEO succession requires a well-defined course of action that ensures that a number of highly capable candidates are ready to assume the chief executive position whether through an unexpected event or a planned transition. Inside CEO Succession is designed to help boards comprehensively manage that process and effectively sustain their company's profitability.

The problem for the workforce is to replace several employees in leadership positions and not having a succession plan in place to combat the vacancies before they occur. This study discusses how understanding all generation's characteristics can help add to succession plans by knowing how to adjust recruitment, training, and skill building to prepare existing employees and new hires to promote into leadership roles. Parts of the study also talks about Los Angeles County, which is the largest public sector in Southern California as an example to show how their succession plan is changing to target younger generations to fill their vacancies by studying generational traits. The millennials are singled out since this is the largest generation to take the place of the baby boomers. Surveys were given to a small group of millennials to answer questions about work behavior, training, loyalty, and work schedule. The data gathered can provide Los Angeles County departments insight on how millennials think and feel, which may help update current succession plans.
