Book Modern Propagation of Tree Fruits Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Propagation of Tree Fruits Classic Reprint written by B. S. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Propagation of Tree Fruits IN preparing this little book three important factors were kept in mind. First, only to include those practices of propagation which are in general use and which are accepted by the orchardist and the commercial nursery man as being the most important. Second, to furnish in a condensed form such information on propagation as will enable the general fruit grower to follow out the practices. It is assumed that the average fruit grower has a general knowledge of the various methods of propagation, hence the many confusing details are here omitted. Third, an attempt is made to follow rather closely the methods employed by the arger commercial nurseries and to contrast these with the similar Operations of the orchard ists. The fruit grower who buys his nursery stock desires to know something of the methods whereby it is produced. The student of Horticulture needs a general knowledge of nursery work and how to apply it to either commercial or home use. It is hoped that the work is sufficiently clear that any interested fruit grower can successfully produce his own trees, thereby creating a desire to know more and to do greater things. Book Propagation of Deciduous Fruits Classic Reprint

Download or read book Propagation of Deciduous Fruits Classic Reprint written by J. L. Stahl and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Propagation of Deciduous Fruits The question most frequently asked is, ' Why not grow all fruits and shrubs from seeds? The answer is that where improvements have been made these qualities are not transmitted through the seed but are perpetuated through the buds. Hence the necessity of using parts of the plant itself by budding, grafting, and layering. If we merely desire a peach or plum tree without regard to the variety, seeds may be used. Occasionally a variety will come true to type from the seed as does the old Heath Cling peach, but such cases are rare. In propagating fruits, therefore, seeds are used only for grow ing stock plants on which to bud or graft varieties. This is true for most tree fruits. Some stocks are profitably grown from cuttings, such as quinces, roses, grapes, and certain types of plums. The question of what kind of stocks to use even for the common deciduous fruits is a long story in itself - much too long to be narrated here with any degree of completeness. The following summary must suffice: Apple - Stocks for apples may be grown from the seeds of any variety of apple. As there is no commercial source of supply in this country aside from very limited quantities from old seedling orchards in New England referred to as Vermont crab, nurserymen procure their seeds from France and Austria. These are native seedlings known to the trade as French crab. Stock for dwarf apples consists of stool or mound layers from the Paradise apple, a natural dwarf type. Book Propagating Fruit Plants

Download or read book Propagating Fruit Plants written by C. Thornton and published by Leaves of Gold Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PROPAGATING FRUIT PLANTS (Rare and Heritage Fruit Growing #1) Anyone can easily multiply their own rare and heritage fruit trees and shrubs for selling, sharing or growing their own mini-orchard. This handbook shows you how. Covering such topics as propagation by seeds, suckers, layers, cuttings, eye-cuttings, root-cuttings and division, this book utilises the vast knowledge of 19th century writer David Alexander Crichton. Crichton was the official Australian government expert and lecturer upon 'Fruit Culture'. His book The Australasian Fruit Culturist (1893) is well worth reading more than a century later. This more recent handbook is one of a series written for 'backyard farmers' of the 21st century. The series focuses on rare and heritage fruit in Australia, although it includes much information of interest to fruit enthusiasts around the world. 'Heritage' or 'heirloom' fruits such as old-fashioned varieties of apple, quince, fig, plum, peach and pear are increasingly popular due to their diverse flavours, excellent nutritional qualities and other desirable characteristics. They are part of our horticultural, vintage and culinary inheritance. To pick a tree-ripened heritage fruit from your own back yard and bite into it is to experience the taste of fresh food as our forefathers knew it. During the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries fruit diversity was huge, but in modern supermarkets only a limited range of commercial fruit varieties is now available to consumers. Heritage, heirloom and rare fruit enthusiasts across the world are currently reviving our horticultural legacy by renovating old orchards and identifying 'lost', unusual and historic fruit varieties. The goal is to make a much wider range of fruit trees available again to the home gardener. This series of handbooks aims to help.

This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nursery Propagation and Topworking of the Macadamia Fruit and nut trees require a long time to reach maturity and only a few can be grown per acre; consequently, great value and importance should be attached to each tree. When planted, the grower should have a reasonable expectancy as to the future performance of the tree. This can best be attained when definite varieties of known performance abilities are planted. Download or read book The Trees That Grow the Fruit That Sells Classic Reprint written by Harrison'S Nurseries and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trees That Grow the Fruit That Sells Some propagators use the wood pruned from nursery stock to get their supply of buds. Others cut buds from bearing orchards, but make no selection of the trees which bear the most fruit. It has been pretty thor oughly demonstrated that when young trees are propagated by buds or grafts, they have the same bearing characteristics as the tree from which the budding or grafting wood was cut. If this tree is a regular bearer of heavy cr0ps. Of fine fruit, the young trees in all probability will be the same. If this tree is a shy bearer, or produces inferior fruit, the young trees have very little chance of ever becoming profitable orchard units. You can notice it in your own orchard and neighborhood - one Baldwin or York Imperial tree will bear twice as many apples as another standing alongside it, and better Apples, too. This condition applies as well to Peaches and' Pears and other fruits. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Promising New Fruits During the past five years this apple, which has long been grown in certain localities in Missouri, has attracted marked attention as a variety well adapted to planting in commercial orchards in that and neighboring States. Combining, as it does, the desirable characteris tics of the old Ralls (variously known in the Middle and Southern States under the synonyms Rawles Genet, Rawles Janet, Geniton, lveverfail, and some twenty-five others), with larger size and brighter color than that well-known sort, it appears to have been first described and illustrated under the name Ingram Seedling in the Journal of Agriculture, published at St. Louis, Mo., and somewhat later, in 1868, in the Horticulturist, Vol. XXIII, p. 201.
