Book Science and Mind in Contemporary Process Thought

Download or read book Science and Mind in Contemporary Process Thought written by Jakub Dziadkowiec and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship of mind to matter, and the very understanding of mind and matter still eludes understanding, even after millennia of philosophical work and centuries of scientific reflection. The present volume shows how process philosophy helps us in conceptualizing such problems. The reader will find twelve chapters—written by prominent specialists of various specializations—discussing the relation between a processual school of thinking and natural and psychological scientific research, with a focus on the problems of mind and experience. The three successive sections of the book scrutinise in increasing detail the human mind, to give the full overview of the role that process philosophy might play in providing a consistent, unified language for the description of physical and mental reality.

Integrating Whitehead’s thought with the insights of Bergson, James, Pierce, Merleau-Ponty, Descola, Fuchs, Hofmann, Grof and many others, contributors from around the world reveal the relevance of process philosophy to physics, cosmology, astrobiology, ecology, metaphysics, aesthetics, psychedelics, and religion. A global collection, this book expresses multivocal possibilities for the development of process cosmology after Whitehead.

Book Process Relational Philosophy

Download or read book Process Relational Philosophy written by C. Robert Mesle and published by Templeton Foundation Press. This book was released on 2009-07-23 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Process thought is the foundation for studies in many areas of contemporary philosophy, theology, political theory, educational theory, and the religion-science dialogue. It is derived from Alfred North Whitehead's philosophy, known as process theology, which lays a groundwork for integrating evolutionary biology, physics, philosophy of mind, theology, environmental ethics, religious pluralism, education, economics, and more. In Process-Relational Philosophy, C. Robert Mesle breaks down Whitehead's complex writings, providing a simple but accurate introduction to the vision that underlies much of contemporary process philosophy and theology. In doing so, he points to a "way beyond both reductive materialism and the traps of Cartesian dualism by showing reality as a relational process in which minds arise from bodies, in which freedom and creativity are foundational to process, in which the relational power of persuasion is more basic than the unilateral power of coercion." Because process-relational philosophy addresses the deep intuitions of a relational world basic to environmental and global thinking, it is being incorporated into undergraduate and graduate courses in philosophy, educational theory and practice, environmental ethics, and science and values, among others. Process-Relational Philosophy: A Basic Introduction makes Whitehead's creative vision accessible to all students and general readers.

This book was released on 1989-07-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indictment of the ideology of modernity, which has resulted in our leading incoherent and fragmented lives, Oliver and Gershman's book explores the profound paradigmatic differences that exist among the world's people and describes a rich theory of knowing and being, commonly called "process philosophy." The promise of process philosophy is in its potential to allow us to participate more fully in the flow of all of time and nature. But what does it mean for a teacher and student in the learning situation to have a process point of view? The authors also discuss many of the various implications in regard to language, space, power relationships, and time as they place process philosophy in the educational context.

Book The Allure of Things Process and Object in Contemporary Philosophy

Download or read book The Allure of Things Process and Object in Contemporary Philosophy written by Roland Faber and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Allure of Things: Process and Object in Contemporary Philosophy contests the view that metaphysics is something to be overcome. By focusing on process and object oriented ontology (OOO) and rejecting the privileging of human existence over the existence of non-human objects, this collection explores philosophy's concern with things themselves. Interest in Latour, Stengers, Whitehead, Harman and Meillassoux has prompted a resurgence of ontological questions outside the traditional subject-object framework of modern critical thought. This new collection consequently proposes a pragmatic and pluralist approach to 'modes of existence'. Drawing together an international range of leading scholars, The Allure of Things fully covers the similarities between OOO and process philosophy, and is an essential addition to the literature on metaphysics.

Book Process and Pluralism

  • Author : Zhihe Wang
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter
  • Release : 2013-05-02
  • ISBN : 3110328445
  • Pages : 235 pages

Download or read book Process and Pluralism written by Zhihe Wang and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a uniquely process relational oriented Chinese approach to inter-religious dialogue called Chinese Harmonism. The key features of Chinese harmonism are peaceful co-existence, mutual transformation, and openness to change. As developed with help from Whiteheadian process thought, Chinese harmonism provides a middle way between particularism and universalism, showing how diversity can exist within unity. Chinese harmonism is open to similarities among religions, but it also emphasizes that differences among religions can be complementary rather than contradictory. Thus Chinese harmonism implies an attitude of respect for others and a willingness to learn from others, without reducing the other to one’s own identity: that is, to sameness. By emphasizing the possibility of complementariness, a process oriented Chinese harmonism avoids a dichotomy between universalism and particularism represented respectively by John Hick and S. Mark Heim, and will make room for a genuine openness and do justice to the culturally and religiously “other.”
