Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Electricity, Vol. 1: Laboratory and Lecture Course, for First Year Students of Electrical Engineering, Based on the International Definitions of the Electrical Units; Current, Pressure, Resistance, Energy, Power and Cells Exactly ten years have elapsed since the preface to the first edition of this book was written - a decade which has seen a'vast development in the applications of elec tricity to industrial purposes, and the springing up in all parts of the kingdom of Technical Schools and Colleges where much attention is devoted to the study of electro technics. Hence, to day it IS far more easy for a student to connect his experimental apparatus with the electric light mains and use a comparatively large current at a pressure of 100 volts, than it was in 1886 to obtain a small current at a much lower pressure from the battery which he had to set up for the purpose. This possibility of carrying out the experiments on a larger scale has led to considerable simplification in certain cases; for ex ample, ih experimentally determining the heat equivalent of electric energy, it 'is no longer necessary to distract the beginner's attention with a variety of corrections for the loss of heat, &c. Book Modern Applications of Electricity Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Modern Applications of Electricity Vol 1 of 2 written by Édouard Hospitalier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Applications of Electricity, Vol. 1 of 2 In the present wholly revised edition, a large number of important alterations and additions have been made, with the view of giving an account of the numerous inventions which have during the last two years been made in practical electricity. The necessity of a second edition twelve months after the publication of the first clearly shows the general interest taken in the subject which is treated in this book; and, on the other hand, the necessity of dividing the book into two volumes must be ascribed to the enormous progress electrical appliances have lately made, and are making daily and hourly. As a practical illustration of this progress, I may mention that this preface has been set up in type by a composing machine which is worked by electricity. In the first volume a considerable number of electric generators and are lamps have been added to those given originally, and a better account of the incandescent lamps will, I trust, be likewise acceptable. After many issues of the book had appeared in its original form, it seemed desirable to bring it up to date; and since the practice, not unfrequently resorted to by writers, of inserting a number of new patches in an antiquated ground work, would be out of place in a book which had been written to aid electrotechnical teaching and not for purposes of profit, a proposition was made to entirely rewrite it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity in the Service of Man, Vol. 1: A Popular and Practical Treatise on the Applications of Electricity to Modern Life; The History and Principles of Electrical Science Early History Of Magnetism - Nothing certain is known about the exact period when the compass was brought to Europe. We find in a piece of poetry called La Bible, composed by Guyot de Provins, dated 1190, some lines to the effect that sailors consulted the magnetic needle when bad weather set in. Jacques de Vitry, in his Historia Naturalis (1215 mentions the magnetic needle as being at that time no longer a novelty. The first European who took into account the declinations of the needle was probably Christopher Columbus. Its deflection from the due north had been previously attributed to the incorrect construction of the instrument. Variations in the deflection of the needle at the same place were first noticed by Henry Gellibrand in the year 1634.
