Book Fueling the Gilded Age

Download or read book Fueling the Gilded Age written by Andrew B. Arnold and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the railroads won the Gilded Age, the coal industry lost it. Railroads epitomized modern management, high technology, and vast economies of scale. By comparison, the coal industry was embarrassingly primitive. Miners and operators dug coal, bought it, and sold it in 1900 in the same ways that they had for generations. In the popular imagination, coal miners epitomized anti-modern forces as the so-called “Molly Maguire” terrorists. Yet the sleekly modern railroads were utterly dependent upon the disorderly coal industry. Railroad managers demanded that coal operators and miners accept the purely subordinate role implied by their status. They refused. Fueling the Gilded Age shows how disorder in the coal industry disrupted the strategic plans of the railroads. It does so by expertly intertwining the history of two industries—railroads and coal mining—that historians have generally examined from separate vantage points. It shows the surprising connections between railroad management and miner organizing; railroad freight rate structure and coal mine operations; railroad strategy and strictly local legal precedents. It combines social, economic, and institutional approaches to explain the Gilded Age from the perspective of the relative losers of history rather than the winners. It beckons readers to examine the still-unresolved nature of America’s national conundrum: how to reconcile the competing demands of national corporations, local businesses, and employees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data is the basic ingredient of all Big Data applications, and Big Data technologies are constantly deploying new strategies to maximise efficiency and reduce the time taken to process information. This book presents the proceedings of MMBD2022, the third edition of the conference series Modern Management based on Big Data (MMBD). The conference was originally scheduled to take place from 15 to 18 August 2022 in Seoul, South Korea, but was changed to a virtual event on the same dates. Some 200 submissions were received for presentation at the conference, 52 of which were ultimately accepted after exhaustive review by members of the programme committee and peer-reviewers, who took into account the breadth and depth of the research topics and the scope of MMBD. Topics covered include data analytics, modelling, technologies and visualization, architectures for parallel processing systems, data mining tools and techniques, machine learning algorithms, and big data for engineering applications. There are also papers covering modern management, including topics such as strategy, decision making, manufacturing and logistics-based systems, engineering economy, information systems and law-based information treatment, and papers from a special session covering big data in manufacturing, retail, healthcare, accounting, banking, education, global trading, and e-commerce. Big data analysis and emerging applications were popular topics. The book includes many innovative and original ideas, as well as results of general significance, all supported by clear and rigorous reasoning and compelling evidence and methods, and will be of interest to all those working with Big Data.

Download or read book Managing Coal written by Balaji S. Chakravarthy and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1981-06-30 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal, hailed as "America's ace in the hole" because this country holds about thirty percent of the recoverable reserve in the world, is being looked to as a viable solution to the encroaching energy crisis. Surprisingly, while being a subject of intense current interest, the management of coal companies has until now remained a largely neglected field of research. Concerned over how the coal industry could effectively contribute to the energy future, Chakravarthy presents this comprehensive study on individual coal companies. The book is concerned primarily with management's strategic responses to the coal challenges that they have faced since the late 1960s. Using the theory of organizational adaptation, it describes and examines the three distinct ways managers of coal companies are facing the problem of transforming the limiting aspects of their internal structure to fit the industry's changing environment. Based on four in-depth case studies, the book proposes a model of adaptation, building on existing concepts in the field. (By demonstrating the descriptive power of the model, the study makes a simultaneous contribution to the theory of adaptation.) It also reviews the history of adaptation in the coal industry and describes the new challenges to which coal companies must respond, exploring the implications for both coal company management and federal energy planners.
