Book Vernacular Industrialism in China

Download or read book Vernacular Industrialism in China written by Eugenia Lean and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early twentieth-century China, Chen Diexian (1879–1940) was a maverick entrepreneur—at once a prolific man of letters and captain of industry, a magazine editor and cosmetics magnate. He tinkered with chemistry in his private studio, used local cuttlefish to source magnesium carbonate, and published manufacturing tips in how-to columns. In a rapidly changing society, Chen copied foreign technologies and translated manufacturing processes from abroad to produce adaptations of global commodities that bested foreign brands. Engaging in the worlds of journalism, industry, and commerce, he drew on literati practices associated with late-imperial elites but deployed them in novel ways within a culture of educated tinkering that generated industrial innovation. Through the lens of Chen’s career, Eugenia Lean explores how unlikely individuals devised unconventional, homegrown approaches to industry and science in early twentieth-century China. She contends that Chen’s activities exemplify “vernacular industrialism,” the pursuit of industry and science outside of conventional venues, often involving ad hoc forms of knowledge and material work. Lean shows how vernacular industrialists accessed worldwide circuits of law and science and experimented with local and global processes of manufacturing to navigate, innovate, and compete in global capitalism. In doing so, they presaged the approach that has helped fuel China’s economic ascent in the twenty-first century. Rather than conventional narratives that depict China as belatedly borrowing from Western technology, Vernacular Industrialism in China offers a new understanding of industrialization, going beyond material factors to show the central role of culture and knowledge production in technological and industrial change.

Book Industrialization in the Modern World 2 volumes

Download or read book Industrialization in the Modern World 2 volumes written by John Hinshaw and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique two-volume work analyzes the Industrial Revolution from a global perspective and traces its influences up to the present day—encouraging students to rethink the significance of events past and present. By taking a fresh approach to its topic, Industrialization in the Modern World: From the Industrial Revolution to the Internet enables students to see this ongoing phenomenon not as a standalone event, but as a catalyst for the formation of today's globalized, industrializing world. Spanning the period from 1750 to the present, the work offers some 450 entries that cover developments in Africa and Asia, as well as in Europe and the United States. Numerous essays are organized around specific questions or problems; others examine significant events, countries, or industries. The work deals with all the major aspects of traditional industrialization (textiles, coal, steel), as well as modern variations (China, computers, the Internet). With a targeted approach, the authors will help students see how industrialization in one society influenced another, how industrialization spread throughout the world, and the causes and effects of each country's individual "revolution."

Book The Fourth Industrial Revolution

Download or read book The Fourth Industrial Revolution written by Klaus Schwab and published by Currency. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World-renowned economist Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, explains that we have an opportunity to shape the fourth industrial revolution, which will fundamentally alter how we live and work. Schwab argues that this revolution is different in scale, scope and complexity from any that have come before. Characterized by a range of new technologies that are fusing the physical, digital and biological worlds, the developments are affecting all disciplines, economies, industries and governments, and even challenging ideas about what it means to be human. Artificial intelligence is already all around us, from supercomputers, drones and virtual assistants to 3D printing, DNA sequencing, smart thermostats, wearable sensors and microchips smaller than a grain of sand. But this is just the beginning: nanomaterials 200 times stronger than steel and a million times thinner than a strand of hair and the first transplant of a 3D printed liver are already in development. Imagine “smart factories” in which global systems of manufacturing are coordinated virtually, or implantable mobile phones made of biosynthetic materials. The fourth industrial revolution, says Schwab, is more significant, and its ramifications more profound, than in any prior period of human history. He outlines the key technologies driving this revolution and discusses the major impacts expected on government, business, civil society and individuals. Schwab also offers bold ideas on how to harness these changes and shape a better future—one in which technology empowers people rather than replaces them; progress serves society rather than disrupts it; and in which innovators respect moral and ethical boundaries rather than cross them. We all have the opportunity to contribute to developing new frameworks that advance progress.

Book Work Self and Society

Download or read book Work Self and Society written by Catherine Casey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent interest in the effects of restructuring and redesigning the work place, the link between individual identity and structural change has usually been asserted rather than demonstrated. Through an extensive review of data from field work in a multi-national corporation Catherine Casey changes this. She knows that changes currently occurring in the world of work are part of the vast social and cultural changes that are challenging the assumptions of modern industrialism. These events affect what people do everyday, and they are altering relations among ourselves and with the physical world. This valuable book is not only a critcal analysis of the transformations occurring in the world of work, but an exploration of the effects of contemporary practices of work on the self.

Book Modern Industrialism

Download or read book Modern Industrialism written by Frank Lerond McVey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Industrialism It would have been a difficult task to write the history of Modern Industrialism in a work of five or six volumes. It is a still bolder undertaking to attempt it within the pages of a single book. Believing firmly in the necessity of a clear understanding of what our complicated industrial society means, I have attempted neither a work of many volumes nor a compact history of modern industry, but have endeavored to show in its essentials only what that history has been in three countries, how complicated industry is in the machinery of production, exchange and distribution, and finally what problems arise from the very nature of the complicated organization with which states are forced to deal. To facilitate this treatment the book is divided into the three parts: History, Industry, and Administration. It is still further my belief that in our present industrial society are to be found all the essentials of the future state. If a people know what these are, to what purpose they may be utilized, how strong and how weak fundamental principles of organization are, they may look with greater confidence to the future of the industrial state. As a people, the inhabitants of the United States are confronted by more serious problems than the people of Great Britain or Germany.
