Book Modern German Music Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book Modern German Music Vol 2 of 2 written by Henry F. Chorley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern German Music, Vol. 2 of 2: Recollections and Criticisms The above is a solid, if not a very genial, tribute to Hummel the pianist; but I must think, that from philosophers so far-sighted, and from musicians so catholic, he still might have claimed fairer construction and kinder allowance. Though he had not beautiful Polish eyes, he was still a notable composer; though he was like a vessel of the worst material, he had more than the mere Pandora's gift of interpreta tion he commanded the individual force, fire - most of all, fancy - of a poet capable of ex tempore utterance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern German Music, Vol. 1 of 2: Recollections and Criticisms Indeed, I suspect that those who limit their labours to a consideration of musical effects, will generally find this same instinct (not to call it prompt judgment) a safer guide than many dare admit. It is impossible to know a work thoroughly on a first hearing - on a first intercourse with an artist to perceive the extent of his merits: but unless the work produce from the first a quick desire for better acquaint ance - unless the artist at first displays some attribute or accomplishment that attracts-it may be only a damage done to taste, and a loss of time, on subsequent occasions to attempt to find beauty where none suggested itself - or charm in that which failed to charm originally. Book Mystical Love in the German Baroque

Download or read book Mystical Love in the German Baroque written by Isabella van Elferen and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mystical Love in the German Baroque: Theology, Poetry, Music identifies the cultural and devotional conventions underlying expressions of mystical love in poetry and music of the German baroque. It sheds new light on the seemingly erotic overtones in settings of the Song of Songs and dialogues between Christ and the faithful soul in late 17th- and early 18th-century cantatas by Heinrich Sch tz, Dieterich Buxtehude, and Johann Sebastian Bach. While these compositions have been interpreted solely as a secularizing tendency within devotional music of the baroque period, Isabella van Elferen demonstrates that they need to be viewed instead as intensifications of the sacred. Based on a wide selection of previously unedited or translated 17th- and 18th-century sources, van Elferen describes the history and development of baroque poetic and musical love discourses, from Sch tz's early works through Buxtehude's cantatas and Bach's cantatas and Passions. This long and multilayered discursive history of these compositions considers the love poetry of Petrarch, European reception of petrarchan imagery and traditions, its effect on the madrigal in Germany, and the role of Catholic medieval mystics in baroque Lutheranism. Van Elferen shows that Bach's compositional technique, based on the emotional characteristics of text and music rather than on the depiction of single words, allows the musical expression of mystical love to correspond closely to contemporary literary and theological conceptions of this affect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Fothergill Chorley was music critic of The Athenaeum for over thirty years, and published several books on the state of contemporary European music, including Music and Manners in France and Germany (1841) and Thirty Years' Musical Recollections (1862), both reissued in this series. In the two-volume Modern German Music, published in 1854, he revisits many of the topics and places discussed in the 1841 volume, but views them from the other side of the Year of Revolution, 1848, which, he argues, changed the cultural as well as the political atmosphere of the German states significantly and permanently. Lively descriptions of German cities, their culture and especially their music festivals are accompanied by extended essays on Spohr, Beethoven, Schubert and Mendelssohn, but Chorley is by no means an uncritical observer, and his comments on the rise of nationalism and militarism in the German states after 1848 now seem prophetic.

Download or read book Crescendo of the Virtuoso written by Paul Metzner and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Age of Revolution, Paris came alive with wildly popular virtuoso performances. Whether the performers were musicians or chefs, chess players or detectives, these virtuosos transformed their technical skills into dramatic spectacles, presenting the marvelous and the outré for spellbound audiences. Who these characters were, how they attained their fame, and why Paris became the focal point of their activities is the subject of Paul Metzner's absorbing study. Covering the years 1775 to 1850, Metzner describes the careers of a handful of virtuosos: chess masters who played several games at once; a chef who sculpted hundreds of four-foot-tall architectural fantasies in sugar; the first police detective, whose memoirs inspired the invention of the detective story; a violinist who played whole pieces on a single string. He examines these virtuosos as a group in the context of the society that was then the capital of Western civilization. Book Editing Music in Early Modern Germany

Download or read book Editing Music in Early Modern Germany written by SusanLewis Hammond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editing Music in Early Modern Germany argues that editors played a critical role in the transmission and reception of Italian music outside Italy. Like their counterparts in the world of classical learning, Renaissance music editors translated texts and reworked settings from Venetian publications, adapting them to the needs of northern audiences. Their role is most evident in the emergence of the anthology as the primary vehicle for the distribution of madrigals outside Italy. As a publication type that depended upon the judicious selection and presentation of material, the anthology showcased editorial work. Anthologies offer a valuable case study for examining the impact of editorial decision-making on the cultivation of particular styles, genres, authors and audiences. The book suggests that music editors defined the appropriation of Italian music through the same processes of adaptation, transformation and domestication evident in the broader reception of Italy north of the Alps. Through these studies, Susan Lewis Hammond's work reassesses the importance of northern Europe in the history of the madrigal and its printing. This book will be the first comprehensive study of editors as a distinct group within the network of printers, publishers, musicians and composers that brought the madrigal to northern audiences. The field of Renaissance music printing has a long and venerable scholarly tradition among musicologists and music bibliographers. This study will contribute to recent efforts to infuse these studies with new approaches to print culture that address histories of reading and listening, patronage, marketing, transmission, reception, and their cultural and political consequences.

Book Dickens Journalism Music

Download or read book Dickens Journalism Music written by Robert Terrell Bledsoe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-23 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dickens, Journalism, Music presents the first full analysis of the articles on music published in the two journals conducted by Charles Dickens, Household Words and its successor, All the Year Round. Robert Bledsoe examines the editorial influence of Dickens on articles written by a range of writers and what it reveals about his own developing attitude to music and its social role in parks, community singing groups, music halls and on the streets. The book also looks at the difference between the two journals and how the greater coverage of classical music and opera in All the Year Round reflects the increasing importance of music to Dickens in his later life.
