Book Modern English Vol 1

Download or read book Modern English Vol 1 written by Henry Pendexter Emerson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern English, Vol. 1: Elementary Lessons in English The two books of the "Modern English" Course are closely related, not only in a common purpose to arouse interest in the correct use of the English of to-day, but in the means by which this purpose is to be attained. Both books aim to make pupils able to express their own thoughts with freedom and satisfaction, to understand with ease the thoughts of others, and to appreciate when such thoughts are expressed with power, beauty, or grace. Instead of relying upon technical grammar to mold the daily speech of children, emphasis is laid upon practice in speaking, reading, interpreting, and writing under the guidance of the teacher, who should have a deep interest in the language and be master of its forms and uses. The authors believe in the supreme importance of interest in successful language study. They have, therefore, spared no pains in determining upon the topics to be presented and in subjecting their choice to repeated tests in the schoolroom. The lessons in Book One are based upon a cycle of topics, beginning with home life, leading out through school associations and familiar sights and sounds in nature, and culminating in the larger and remoter thought of country and society. Book Teaching the History of the English Language

Download or read book Teaching the History of the English Language written by Colette Moore and published by Modern Language Association of America. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the history of the English language (HEL) encompasses a broad sweep of time and space, reaching back to the fifth century and around the globe. Further, the language has always varied from place to place and continues to evolve today. Instructors face the challenges of teaching this vast subject in one semester and of engaging students with unfamiliar material and techniques. This volume guides instructors in designing an HEL course suited to their own interests and institutions. The essays consider what subjects of HEL to include, how to organize the course, and what textbook to assign. They offer historical approaches and those that are not structured by chronology. Sample assignments provide opportunities for students to conduct original research, work with archives and digital resources, and investigate language in their communities. The essays also help students question notions of linguistic correctness.

This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graded lessons in English an elementary English grammar: consisting of one hundred practical lessons, carefully graded and adapted to the class-room Brainerd Kellogg (August 15, 1834 - January 9, 1920) was born in Champlain, New York. He was a Tutor (1860-1861) and Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature (1861-1868) at Middlebury College in Vermont, United States. From 1868 to 1907 he was professor at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He published a number of influential education books, some of which are available on Project Gutenberg. Kellogg was the author of Rhetoric; History of the English Language. With Alonzo Reed, he jointly authored Graded Lessons in English; Higher Lessons in English; A One Book Course. He authored a variety of textbooks on English writing and literature, including a series on the works of William Shakespeare. Most methods of diagramming in pedagogy are based on the work of Alonzo Reed and Brainerd Kellogg in their book Higher Lessons in English, first published in 1877, though the method has been updated with recent understanding of grammar. Reed and Kellogg were preceded, and their work probably informed, by W. S. Clark, who published his "balloon" method of depicting grammar in his 1847 book A Practical Grammar: In Which Words, Phrases & Sentences are Classified According to Their Offices and Their Various Relationships to Each Another. Some schoolteachers continue to use the Reed-Kellogg system in teaching grammar, but others have discouraged it in favor of more modern tree diagrams.
