Book excerpt: A celebration of the innovative, artisanal, and sustainable living exemplified by contemporary Dutch interiors. With a carefully curated collection of interiors, including historic canal houses, restored farms, and green homes, belonging to interior designers, product designers, architects, and artists, this book showcases creative and resourceful living. These properties have been created or renovated and brought into the twenty-first century with typical Dutch style and sensibility—environmentally friendly, imaginative uses of space filled with color and charm and never to be taken too seriously. Each home in the book reflects the personality and spirit of the people who inhabit it. From furniture designer Valentin Loellman’s handcrafted interiors in a traditional worker’s cottage on the Maas river to fiber artist Claudy Jongstra’s farmhouse in Friesland where indigo dye plants grow in the biodynamic garden, Coming Home illustrates fun ideas and easy ways to incorporate individual style into your surroundings. Whether it’s the traditional “lowlands” aesthetic of combining old and new, faded and inviting, into a casual chic or a quirky reinvention of a space that reveals a touch of eccentricity, this book illustrates why the Netherlands is truly loved by so many and can be an inspiration to us all.

Book Dutch Modernism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Donald Langmead
  • Publisher : Greenwood
  • Release : 1996-10-11
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Dutch Modernism written by Donald Langmead and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1996-10-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical guide to the English-language literature, Dutch Modernism demonstrates the importance of the Dutch contribution to 20th-century architecture. Holland's valuable role in the creation of modernism (1900-1940) was all but ignored until 30 years ago; it is significant that more than a third of the English-language literature has appeared since 1975. This guide is comprehensive; it summarizes, describes, and evaluates 1,250 references in the light of contemporary theory and practice. This work is of interest to scholars, students, and practitioners. The introduction outlines Holland's unique place in the development of international Modernism, 1900-1940, and explores the phenomenon of its eventual recognition in Britain and the United States. Although not an exhaustive study, this work presents all the areas of study and helpfully evaluates most entries, saving the user time and energy. A number of Dutch publications have been included, some because they are seminal theoretical works and others because they are rich in images. As a guide to English-language sources, Dutch Modernism reaches a wider audience than earlier Dutch and Italian bibliographies.

Book excerpt: The Netherlands is a relatively small country, but it has a large international impact when it comes to design. This book looks at the decades from 1890 to 1940, when modern Dutch design emerged and crystallized into a number of coherent movements. While designers in the Netherlands during this period were familiar with and influenced by ideas and trends originating outside the country, they created a distinctively Dutch design culture that remains vital in the twenty-first century.Modern Dutch Design includes four essays that examine important, and sometimes overlooked, currents that ran through this half century, as Dutch designers responded to powerful social, economic, and political changes. With more than 250 illustrations, drawn mostly from the collection of The Wolfsonian-Florida International University, it offers compelling visual evidence of the rich diversity of Dutch design in these decades.

Book Contemporary Dutch School Architecture

Download or read book Contemporary Dutch School Architecture written by Dolf Broekhuizen and published by Nai010 Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Education has changed drastically within a short period. The design of the educational building has therefore become more of an architectural challenge than ever; classrooms have been replaced by learning domains, main halls have turned into genuine plazas." "This book provides an up to date and revealing survey of recent school architecture in the Netherlands. The four essays and forty school portraits by Like Bijlsma, Dolf Broekhuizen, Paul Groenendijk, Eireen Schreurs and Ton Verstegen analyse and present the changes in the architecture of primary and secondary schools from 1990 to the present." "Architecture can contribute to stimulating learning environments, but architecture is more than an optimal translation of learning processes. The learning environment is also an environment that is used and experienced for a specific period of time. Architecture can create new spatial experiences for new generations that become part of the collective memory. It can thus rejoin tradition, which at this time is a tradition of change." --Book Jacket.

Book Sympathy of Things

Download or read book Sympathy of Things written by Lars Spuybroek and published by V2_ publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have to find our way back to beauty," writes Lars Spuybroek in the introduction to The Sympathy of Things. In this book Spuybroek argues that we must "undo" the twentieth century - the age in which the sublime turned from an art category into a technical reality. This leads him to the aesthetical insights of the nineteenth-century English art critic John Ruskin, from which he distils pointers for our time. In The Sympathy of Things, the old romantic notion of sympathy, a core concept in Ruskin's aesthetics, is re-evaluated as the driving force of the aesthetic experience. For Ruskin, beauty always comprises variation, imperfection and fragility, three concepts that wholly disappeared from our mindsets during the twentieth century. Spuybroek addresses the five central dual themes of Ruskin in turn: the Gothic and work, ornament and matter, sympathy and abstraction, the picturesque and time, ecology and design. He wrests each of these themes from the Victorian era and compares them with the related ideas of later aestheticians and philosophers like William James and Bruno Latour.
