Book excerpt: Most studies of the so-called tribal communities in India stress their social, economic, and political differences from communities that are organized on the basis of caste. It was this apparent contrast between tribal and caste lifestyle and, moreover, the paucity of material on tribal groups, that motivated the author to undertake this study of a poor "tribal" community, the Girasia, in northwestern India. While carrying out her fieldwork, the author soon became aware that the traditional tribe-caste categories needed to be revised; in fact, she found them more often than not to be constructs by outsiders, mostly academic. Of greater importance for an understanding of the Girasia was the wider and more complex issue of self-perception and identification by others that must be seen in the context of their poverty as well as in the strategic and shifting use of kinship, gender and class relations in the region.

Book excerpt: The book reflects on the discreet influence of Hindutva in situations/places outside or at the margins of its organisational and mobilisational arena, where people denying any commitment to the Sangh Parivar, incidentally, show affinities and parallelisms with its discourse and practice. This study looks at Hindutva’s entrenchment not so much as an orchestration from above but more as an outcome of a process that evolves in relation to specific social and cultural milieus. The contributors analyse Hindutva’s entrenchment, emphasising on the ethnography of the forms of mediation and/or convergence produced in certain contexts. The 11 case studies highlight three different dynamics of Hindutva’s cultural entrenchment. The first section gathers cases where RSS-affiliated organisations have set up specific cultural or artistic programmes at the regional level, involving the meditation of local people whose interest in these programmes does not necessarily mean that they endorse the Hindutva agenda completely. The next deals with convergence and refers to cases where the followers gather around a charismatic personality, whose precepts and practice may bring them towards a closer affinity with the Hindutva programme. The last section deals with the contexts of resistance, where social milieus engaged in opposing Hindutva may, in fact, paradoxically, and even inadvertently, imbibe some of its ideas and practices in order to contest its claims.

Book excerpt: Dhirendra Nath Majumdar was one of the pioneers of anthropological research in India. He joined the Department of Economics & Sociology, University of Lucknow in 1928. In the course of his 32 years of academic work, he created in Lucknow an exceptional center for anthropological studies through the institutions and journals he founded. Trying to relate the basic concepts of anthropology to the general public, he popularized the concept of 'public anthropology, ' and was also instrumental in promoting anthropology in Hindi. Author H.S. Saksena, one of his prominent students, analyzes Majumdar's life and works on his contributions to tribal ethnography, covering communities from a wide range of habitat, cultural and economic life, and social organization. The book also considers Majumdar's post-1947 studies of changing caste structure and dynamics seen in Indian villages, rural development programs, urban settlements, composition of the working class, as well as emerging problems, such as unemployment among the educated. In his earlier works on tribal communities, Majumdar's anthropometric and serological surveys of select communities and groups in Bengal, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh, as well as his contributions to other fields of anthropology, are also discussed. Professor T.N. Madan in his foreword describes this study as the "first full length study of the work on an Indian anthropologist." The Division of Behavioral and Social Research at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to produce an authoritative guide to new directions in demography of aging. The papers published in this report were originally presented and discussed at a public workshop held in Washington, D.C., August 17-18, 2017. The workshop discussion made evident that major new advances had been made in the last two decades, but also that new trends and research directions have emerged that call for innovative conceptual, design, and measurement approaches.
