La primera parte traza un mapa de algunas de las preguntas fundamentales que la filosofía política ha intentado responder a lo largo de su historia: cuál es el mejor orden político, cuál es la naturaleza de la acción política, qué relaciones existen entre ética y política, entre política y fuerza. La política aparece como un ámbito multidimensional, que abarca la dimensión moral de la justicia, la dimensión estratégica del conflicto y de la fue- rza, y también la búsqueda de sentido y la reflexión sobre la condición humana. En la segunda parte se presentan cuatro paradigmas que constituyen el legado de la tradición filosófico-política occidental, pues han marcado profundamente la historia del pensamiento político: el paradigma de la polis (Platón y Aristóteles), el de la confrontación entre la ciudad del hombre y la ciudad de Dios (desde Agustín y Tomás hasta la Reforma), el del contrato social (Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Kant), y el de la dialéctica entre estado y sociedad, exa- minada desde la perspectiva del conflicto entre liberales como Constant, Tocqueville y Mill, quienes insistieron en los límites del estado, y críticos del liberalismo como Hegel y Marx. En la tercera parte se analizan algunos conceptos políticos fundamentales (libertad y libera- lismo, socialismo y democracia) y se ofrece un panorama de las principales concepciones teó- ricas que están en el foco de la discusión contemporánea, desde Rawls hasta Habermas. El último capítulo se centra en los nuevos desafíos que la filosofía política debe afrontar en nues- tros días, desde la globalización hasta la biopolítica.

La "Seguridad Nacional" fue impuesta desde los Estados Unidos durante la guerra fría a toda su área de influencia y ha causado estragos: guerras, muertes, torturas y la violación sistemática de los derechos humanos en Venezuela, en Latinoamérica y en muchas partes del mundo. Tercero, porque el modelo bolivariano ofrece una respuesta democrática y solidaria al capitalismo salvaje que propone el neo-liberalismo en la actualidad. Venezuela hoy nos ofrece algo radicalmente diferente, es "la posibilidad optimista" de una democracia nueva, solidaria, soberana, socialista, moderna, no dogmática y por qué no, ecológica.

In 2005, Brazil completes twenty continuous years of civil government, a striking exception in the country's history, all of then, except one, chosen by direct elections. The long transition from the dictatorial regime to a non-dictatorial one (not necessarily democratic) begin in 1974. Fifteen years after, in 1989, a new stage in this process begins, overcoming the instability of the national political scene. From this moment on, the consolidation of democracy becomes the central problem of the national political agenda. There are many ways of telling and explaining this history. This book presents a survey of the different interpretations of this important period of Brazilian history and, at the same time, outlines some criticisms on the mainstream interpretations in Brazilian Political Science.
