Book Modeling of Semi active Magnetorheological Damper for Automobile Suspension System

Download or read book Modeling of Semi active Magnetorheological Damper for Automobile Suspension System written by Mahmudur Rahman and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of vehicle suspension systems is an active research field in which one of the objectives is to improve the passenger's comfort through the vibration reduction of the internal engine and external road disturbances. Comfort and road handling in car can be improved by including a semi-active suspension system, controlled by varying the damping based on measurements of the vehicle motions. This research deals with design and development of a quarter-car suspension using magneto-rheological damper (MR). A quarter-car of two degree-of-freedom (DOF) system is designed and constructed on the basis of the concept of a four-wheel independent suspension to simulate the actions of a semi-active vehicle suspension system. The selection of an appropriate MR damper model is crucial, since it provides the suitable current and force relationship and allows finding the appropriate force to the system. The behavioral characteristic of selected MR damper model is simulated and analyzed with different current input. An effective control structure is a key function of this research to determine the complexity of the control design and parameter tuning process. The performance of Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) and Linear Control Regulator (LQR) controller is designed based on the system requirements. In this research, the PID controller is verified experimentally under different road excitations to improve the ride quality and vehicle safety.

Book Semi active Suspension System Using a Magnetorheological Damper

Download or read book Semi active Suspension System Using a Magnetorheological Damper written by Abinav Suresh and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetorheological (MR) Fluid changes its yield strength when it is subjected to a magnetic field. When this fluid is used inside a damper, it has the ability to change the damping coefficients when it is acted upon by magnetic fields. In this experiment, a MR damper was tested on a shock dyno, where characteristics of the damper was found. Three parameters were changed during the course of the experiment, namely: electric current supplied through the solenoid of the damper, displacement amplitude of the piston and driving frequency of the motor. The results show that there was an increase in damping force when the three parameters were increased. Since the damper cannot be categorized as hard or soft using damping force, the damper and its configuration were represented in the terms of energy dissipated and equivalent damping coefficient. The trends of energy dissipated and equivalent damping coefficients were also compared with the change in electric current, displacement amplitude and driving frequency. Using the above results, a mathematical model was developed to predict the behavior of the MR damper. This model can be used in a control system, where a specific damping force and damping ratio is desired. A 'Single Degree of Freedom' (SDOF) system with a mass connected to a spring and a MR damper was studied. The response of the system was analyzed in the terms of transmissibility and phase angle. The results obtained were found similar to a passive suspension system with different damping ratios. A quarter car model was studied using the MR damper. A step input was chosen as road excitation and the responses of sprung and unsprung masses were studied. Sky-hook control strategy was utilized in the model to demonstrate the benefits of continuously changing the damping ratio in the system.

Book Comparison of Magneto rheological Damper Models

Download or read book Comparison of Magneto rheological Damper Models written by Javier Antonio Ruíz Cabrera and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of automotive systems is concerned with ride comfort and handling performance of the vehicle. In the last decade, semi-active suspension systems have been greatly analyzed for automotive applications as they offer the reliability of passive devices, but maintain the versability and adaptability of active systems. Semi-active Magneto-Rheological (MR) dampers present a viable choice for suspension systems. In an MR damper, the damping characteristics can be modified with the application of a magnetic field to the coil inside the tube of the device. Although MR dampers are greatly promising for the control of vehicle suspension systems, their major drawback lies on their non-linear and hysteretic behavior. This behavior makes it a challenge to developed a model for the system. Furthermore, the first step in designing a control strategy for a suspension system is modeling the behavior of the damper in an accurate manner. The present research is focused in the modeling of an MR damper. The problem statement is centered on what type of model of an MR damper can be developed, wich can accurately predict the highly non-linear behavior of the system and can be optimal for online control. For this purpose, various sets of experimental data were obtained from an industrial MR damper, Then, four state-of-the-art MR damper models were trained, analyzed and compared using quantitative and qualitative techniques. Each of the models was selected from four main modeling approaches, phenomenological, semi-phenomenological, black-box, and fuzzy-based. By the end of the research, a novel model for an MR damper was presented, wich combined fuzzy techniques with semo-phenomenological modeling. The results showed that the proposed structure was able to accurately predict the behavior of the MR damper and was suitable for control purposes. The final results can be greatly applicable to the automotive industry, where better comfort and handing control systems could be developed. In addition, the results could be useful to the vast number of industries and applications where MR dampers are employed.

Book Development of a Semi active Intelligent Suspension System for Heavy Vehicles

Download or read book Development of a Semi active Intelligent Suspension System for Heavy Vehicles written by Nima Eslaminasab and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the new advancements in the vibration control strategies and controllable actuator manufacturing, the semi-active actuators (dampers) are finding their way as an essential part of vibration isolators, particularly in vehicle suspension systems. This is attributed to the fact that in a semi-active system, the damping coefficients can be adjusted to improve ride comfort and road handling performances. The currently available semi-active damper technologies can be divided into two main groups. The first uses controllable electromagnetic valves. The second uses magnetorheological (MR) fluid to control the damping characteristics of the system. Leading automotive companies such as General Motors and Volvo have started to use semi-active actuators in the suspension systems of high-end automobiles, such as the Cadillac Seville and Corvette, to improve the handling and ride performance in the vehicle. But much more research and development is needed in design, fabrication, and control of semi-active suspension systems and many challenges must be overcome in this area. Particularly in the area of heavy vehicle systems, such as light armored vehicles, little related research has been done, and there exists no commercially available controllable damper suitable for the relatively high force and large displacement requirements of such application. As the first response to these requirements, this thesis describes the design and modeling of an in-house semi-active twin-tube shock absorber with an internal variable solenoid-actuated valve. A full-scale semi-active damper prototype is developed and the shock absorber is tested to produce the required forcing range. The test results are compared with results of the developed mathematical model. To gain a better understanding of the semi-active suspension controlled systems and evaluate the performance of those systems, using perturbation techniques this thesis provides a detailed nonlinear analysis of the semi-active systems and establishes the issue of nonlinearity in on-off semi-active controlled systems. Despite different semi-active control methods and the type of actuators used in a semi-active controlled system, one important practical aspect of all hydro-mechanical computer controlled systems is the response-time. The longest response-time is usually introduced by the actuator -in this case, controllable actuator - in the system. This study investigates the effect of response-time in a semi-active controlled suspension system using semi-active dampers. Numerical simulations and analytical techniques are deployed to investigate the issue. The performance of the system due to the response-time is then analyzed and discussed. Since the introduction of the semi-active control strategy, the challenge was to develop methods to effectively use the capabilities of semi-active devices. In this thesis, two semi-active control strategies are proposed. The first controller to be proposed is a new hybrid semi-active control strategy based on the conventional Rakheja-Sankar (R-S) semi-active control to provide better ride-handling quality for vehicle suspension systems as well as industrial vibration isolators. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this new strategy, the analytical method of averaging and the numerical analysis method are deployed. In addition, a one-degree-of-freedom test bed equipped with a semi-active magnetorheological (MR) damper is developed. The tests are performed using the MATLAB XPC-target to guarantee the real-time implementation of the control algorithm. The second controller is an intelligent fuzzy logic controller system to optimize the suspension performance. The results from this intelligent system are compared with those of several renowned suspension control methods such as Skyhook. It is shown that the proposed controller can enhance concurrently the vehicle handling and ride comfort, while consuming less energy than existing control methodologies. The key goal of this thesis is to employ the existing knowledge of the semi-active systems together with the new ideas to develop a semi-active suspension system. At the same time, development of an experimental simulation system for real-time control of an experimental test bed is considered. To achieve its goals and objectives, this research study combines and utilizes the numerical simulations and analytical methods, as well as lab-based experimental works. The challenge in this research study is to identify practical and industrial problems and develop proper solutions to those problems using viable scientific approaches.

Book Vehicle Suspension Systems and Electromagnetic Dampers

Download or read book Vehicle Suspension Systems and Electromagnetic Dampers written by Saad Kashem and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the development of a new analytical, full-vehicle model with nine degrees of freedom, which uses the new modified skyhook strategy (SKDT) to control the full-vehicle vibration problem. The book addresses the incorporation of road bank angle to create a zero steady-state torque requirement when designing the direct tilt control and the dynamic model of the full car model. It also highlights the potential of the SKDT suspension system to improve cornering performance and paves the way for future work on the vehicle’s integrated chassis control system. Active tilting technology to improve vehicle cornering is the focus of numerous ongoing research projects, but these don’t consider the effect of road bank angle in the control system design or in the dynamic model of the tilting standard passenger vehicles. The non-incorporation of road bank angle creates a non-zero steady state torque requirement.

Book Modeling and Analysis of a Semi active Magneto rheological Damper Suspension Seat and Controller Synthesis

Download or read book Modeling and Analysis of a Semi active Magneto rheological Damper Suspension Seat and Controller Synthesis written by Xiaoxi Huang and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whole body vibration in operational vehicles can cause serious musculo-skeletal disorders among the exposed workers. Consequently, considerable efforts have been made to protect vehicle operators from potentially harmful vibration. This thesis was aimed at the development of a semi-active suspension seat equipped with a magneto-rheological (MR) fluid damper. A damper controller was synthesized to minimize the vibration transmitted to the seated body and the frequency of end-stop impacts, which is known to induce high intensity vibration or shock motions to the seated occupant. A suspension seat was modeled by considering the kinematic non-linearity due to the cross-linkages and the damper link, while the cushion characteristics were linearized about the operating preload. The force-velocity properties of the MR damper were modeled by piecewise polynomial functions of applied current on the basis of the laboratory-measured data. The kineto-dynamic model of the suspension seat was thoroughly validated using the laboratory-measured responses under harmonic excitations in the 0.5 to 10Hz range. The performance characteristics of the passive suspension seat model were evaluated under different vehicular excitations in terms of frequency-weighted rms acceleration, vibration dose value (VDV), seat effective amplitude transmissibility (SEAT) and VDV ratio. These performance characteristics are also evaluated under amplified vehicular excitations in order to investigate the frequency as well as the potential suppression of end-stop impacts. The controller synthesis was realized in two stages: (1) attenuation of continuous vibration; and (2) suppression of end-stop impacts. Two different algorithms were explored in the first stage synthesis, which included a sky-hook control algorithm and a relative states feedback control algorithm. Each algorithm was further utilized in two different control current modulations. The performance potentials of each control synthesis were investigated using the 2 MATLAB Simulink platform under harmonic, transient, and random vehicular excitations in terms of SEAT and VDV ratio. One controller design (overall best suited for implementations) was subsequently implemented in a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test platform coupled with a MR-fluid damper mounted on an electro-hydraulic actuator that was linked to the HIL simulation platform. The semi-active suspension seat performance characteristics were further evaluated under different excitations using the selected control scheme. The results showed that the selected control scheme yielded SEAT and VDV ratio reductions in the 5 to 30% range depending upon the nature of excitations. The implementation of the second-stage controller, which was tested only by simulations, entirely eliminated the occurrence of end-stop impacts at nominal vibration level and attenuated the end-stop impact severity of three times amplified excitations by up to 10% . The results further suggested that the use of MR-fluid damper in suspension seat was most beneficial to city buses and class I earth moving vehicles amongst the selected inputs.

Book Magneto rheological Damper Modeling Using LPV Systems

Download or read book Magneto rheological Damper Modeling Using LPV Systems written by Vicente Alberto DÍaz Salas and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present research is focused in the dynamical modeling of a Magneto-Rheological Damper as a semi-active actuator. This device shows a complex behavior including non-linearities and hysteresis, features that are to be emulated by a dynamical system, in order to express mathematically the conduct of this device under mechanical vibrations. The M R damper is part of a semi-active suspension system, and by the use of the information of the model designed in this thesis it might be possible to produce a control design for the quarter of car system, in order to regulate the vibrations received by the suspension, incrementing the comfort and safety of the passengers in the vehicle. In order to obtain experimental data from this semi-active device, a set of tests were performed, introducing displacement and current excitation patterns into the shock absorber and measuring the dynamical response of it. Us i ng the experimental results, a set of state of the art models (Semi-Phenomenologial, Phenomenological, B l a c k - B o x) were learned to reproduce this data. This work proposes an L P V (Linear Parameter-Varying) system, as a model for the M R damper, wh i ch is capable of reproduce both the non-linear and hysteretic behavior of the damper. The L P V model proposed has the capacity to create a relationship between the main excitation variables, and the damper force, in a single structure. Due to this feature, it might later be added to a bigger strategy, such as for control or observation. The model was designed using an L P V polynomial system and an switching variable, wh i ch depends on the input velocity and current. Output results shows a higher accuracy from the L P V proposed model, in comparison wi th the state of the art models reviewed: it has E SR index average values below 0.04 while most of the studied models only achieve values below 0.1. The proposed model of this thesis provides a dynamical description of the Magneto-Rheological damper that generates a l ink between the main input variables implicated on the damper, and the output force. This feature might become an advantage to later provide an extended model of the quarter of car, and design a controller to regulate the vibrations applied to the suspension.

The force generated by damper at 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3 ampere was plotted in a single graph versus piston head velocity in order to give better view of result.

Book Adaptive Backstepping Control of Uncertain Systems

Download or read book Adaptive Backstepping Control of Uncertain Systems written by Jing Zhou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-07 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book employs the powerful and popular adaptive backstepping control technology to design controllers for dynamic uncertain systems with non-smooth nonlinearities. Various cases including systems with time-varying parameters, multi-inputs and multi-outputs, backlash, dead-zone, hysteresis and saturation are considered in design and analysis. For multi-inputs and multi-outputs systems, both centralized and decentralized controls are addressed. This book not only presents recent research results including theoretical success and practical development such as the proof of system stability and the improvement of system tracking and transient performance, but also gives self-contained coverage of fundamentals on the backstepping approach illustrated with simple examples. Detail description of methodologies for the construction of adaptive laws, feedback control laws and associated Lyapunov functions is systematically provided in each case. Approaches used for the analysis of system stability and tracking and transient performances are elaborated. Two case studies are presented to show how the presented theories are applied.
