Book The economic development of the Slovak Republic from post Soviet control to present day An Economic Analysis

Download or read book The economic development of the Slovak Republic from post Soviet control to present day An Economic Analysis written by John Peacock and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Berlin, language: English, abstract: This paper explores the economic development of the Slovak Republic from post-Soviet control to present day. The following paper explores the recent economic developments of the Slovak Republic, from its accession into the European Union in the early 2000s, throughout the European monetary crisis in the years 2008 - 2009 and finally reflects upon the country’s current economic state. In doing so, this paper analyzes the most relevant indicators of international and domestic economic well-being and describes some of the underlying factors for these developments. An analysis of the degree to which Slovakia has overcome the hardships imposed by the economic crisis is also presented. The analyses in this paper rely on statistical information available from public databases and, when applicable, consultation of expert literature for an interpretation of the data. When doing so, the author has attempted to provide data for comparison and context, generally with the average from the EU 27 states or of the other Visegrád Group members, when available. This paper only considers a limited number of indicators of economic well-being for these analyses: balance of payments, openness, foreign direct investment, government deficit and debt, inflation, economic growth, employment, and investment. As a result, some other economically relevant topics may be excluded which could provide an even better analysis of the problem. Social costs and other non-economic factors are entirely omitted from this paper although they play an important role in any country’s standard of living. Finally, it is important to note during the analysis of the developments in 2009 and the years afterward that all changes cannot be attributed to the European Debt Crisis as another important event occurred: Slovakia adopted the Euro as its national currency; an event that is often cited as causing initial inflation.

Book Anatomy of Regional Disparities in the Slovak Republic

Download or read book Anatomy of Regional Disparities in the Slovak Republic written by Mariusz Jarmuzek and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines economic growth and various dimensions of regional disparities in Slovakia. We find that regional disparities in the levels of GDP per capita, labor productivity, and labor utilization have widened since 2000, coinciding with the time that Slovakia initiated negotiations on EU accession. Notwithstanding ?-divergence in the levels, there was conditional ?-convergence in the growth rates of GDP per capita and labor productivity. Improvements in total factor productivity were the main engine of growth of GDP in all regions. Sustaining growth and reducing disparities will require increasing the labor utilization ratio and improving the structural and policy determinants of productivity in the eastern regions. The main policy priorities are to improve transportation infrastructure, enhance cost competitiveness through greater regional differentiation in wages and further decentralization of collective bargaining, and increase accumulation of human capital.

Book Beyond the Crisis

Download or read book Beyond the Crisis written by Ruben Atoyan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the nexus between economic growth and buildup of external vulnerabilities, this paper provides a systematic account of different growth strategies followed in Central and Eastern Europe in 2000-08 and then uses this growth diagnostics to derive implications for the post-crisis recovery. The main findings point to three policy lessons for improving growth sustainability. First, greater reliance on tradable sectors should be the cornerstone of the future growth model. Second, enhancing domestic sources of bank credit funding would contribute to mitigation of external vulnerabilities and make domestic financial system more resilient to global financial shocks. Third, prudential and macroeconomic policies will have to be more proactive in managing capital inflows, including funneling these inflows into investment in the export-oriented industries.
