Book Modeling and Controller Design of a Wind Energy Conversion System Including a Matrix Converter

Download or read book Modeling and Controller Design of a Wind Energy Conversion System Including a Matrix Converter written by Seyed Masoud Barakati and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, a grid-connected wind-energy converter system including a matrix converter is proposed. The matrix converter, as a power electronic converter, is used to interface the induction generator with the grid and control the wind turbine shaft speed. At a given wind velocity, the mechanical power available from a wind turbine is a function of its shaft speed. Through the matrix converter, the terminal voltage and frequency of the induction generator is controlled, based on a constant V/f strategy, to adjust the turbine shaft speed and accordingly, control the active power injected into the grid to track maximum power for all wind velocities. The power factor at the interface with the grid is also controlled by the matrix converter to either ensure purely active power injection into the grid for optimal utilization of the installed wind turbine capacity or assist in regulation of voltage at the point of connection. Furthermore, the reactive power requirements of the induction generator are satisfied by the matrix converter to avoid use of self-excitation capacitors. The thesis addresses two dynamic models: a comprehensive dynamic model for a matrix converter and an overall dynamical model for the proposed wind turbine system. The developed matrix converter dynamic model is valid for both steady-state and transient analyses, and includes all required functions, i.e., control of the output voltage, output frequency, and input displacement power factor. The model is in the qdo reference frame for the matrix converter input and output voltage and current fundamental components. The validity of this model is confirmed by comparing the results obtained from the developed model and a simplified fundamental-frequency equivalent circuit-based model. In developing the overall dynamic model of the proposed wind turbine system, individual models of the mechanical aerodynamic conversion, drive train, matrix converter, and squirrel-cage induction generator are developed and combined to enable steady-state and transient simulations of the overall system. In addition, the constraint constant V/f strategy is included in the final dynamic model. The model is intended to be useful for controller design purposes. The dynamic behavior of the model is investigated by simulating the response of the overall model to step changes in selected input variables. Moreover, a linearized model of the system is developed at a typical operating point, and stability, controllability, and observability of the system are investigated. Two control design methods are adopted for the design of the closed-loop controller: a state-feedback controller and an output feedback controller. The state-feedback controller is designed based on the Linear Quadratic method. An observer block is used to estimate the states in the state-feedback controller. Two other controllers based on transfer-function techniques and output feedback are developed for the wind turbine system. Finally, a maximum power point tracking method, referred to as mechanical speed-sensorless power signal feedback, is developed for the wind turbine system under study to control the matrix converter control variables in order to capture the maximum wind energy without measuring the wind velocity or the turbine shaft speed.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, grade: 9, language: English, abstract: The rising demand of electricity and the environmental concern in the recent past necessities the need of renewable energy sources. The Renewable energy sources have gained major importance due to the depletion of the conventional fuels in the future. Among the available renewable sources the Wind energy has gained a significant importance due to its high efficiency and pollution free nature. Large Wind Farms have been set up to meet the energy demand globally. The capacity of the Wind Turbine Generator is being increased gradually from a few KW capacities in the beginning rising up to almost 5 MW in the present. More research has to be carried in this field to make it a dominant source for the rising energy demand. Wind energy potential has to be harnessed on a large scale in places which have high wind density. Before the actual commissioning of the Wind Farm on site, a wide range of analysis has to be carried in terms of simulation. This is done to understand the behavior of the system under various conditions and preventive actions if any are to be taken. The pre analysis gives us an idea of the selection of devices for higher efficiency and system reliability. This project is a research work carried in ETAP (Electrical Transient Analyzer Program), which is a Power System Simulation tool. The analysis carried out to demonstrate the capabilities of the SCIG (Squirrel Cage Induction Generator) based Wind Farm include Load Flow analysis, to find out the Power transferred to the Grid in normal condition at rated Wind Speed. Book Induction Generator in Wind Power Systems

Download or read book Induction Generator in Wind Power Systems written by Yu Zou and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind power is the fastest growing renewable energy and is promising as the number one source of clean energy in the near future. Among various generators used to convert wind energy, the induction generator has attracted more attention due to its lower cost, lower requirement of maintenance, variable speed, higher energy capture efficiency, and improved power quality [1-2]. Generally, there are two types of induction generators widely used in wind power systems - Squirrel-Cage Induction Generator (SCIG) and Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). The straightforward power conversion technique using SCIG is widely accepted in fixed-speed applications with less emphasis on the high efficiency and control of power flow. However, such direct connection with grid would allow the speed to vary in a very narrow range and thus limit the wind turbine utilization and power output. Another major problem with SCIG wind system is the source of reactive power; that is, an external reactive power compensator is required to hold distribution line voltage and prevent whole system from overload. On the other hand, the DFIG with variable-speed ability has higher energy capture efficiency and improved power quality, and thus dominates the large-scale power conversion applications. With the advent of power electronics techniques, a back-to-back converter, which consists of two bidirectional converters and a dc-link, acts as an optimal operation tracking interface between DFIG and loads [3-5]. Field orientation control (FOC) is applied to both rotor- and stator-side converters to achieve desirable control on voltage and power [6,7].

Book Advanced Wind Turbines

Download or read book Advanced Wind Turbines written by Teik-cheng Lim and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-09-13 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can non-windy places make use of wind power for electricity generation? Advanced Wind Turbines provides detailed information that is of great practical importance to wind turbine practitioners from small and congested city-states, where the lack of vast land and high wind speed render the conventional wind turbine less effective. It introduces the non-conventional Darrieus and Savonius wind turbines, as well as their hybrid version, covering basic concepts, computational modelling and recent advances in experimental optimization. What about those who prefer wind turbines in faraway oceans to take advantage of high wind speed, or who come from countries with a lack of shallow seabed? Floating offshore wind turbines are also discussed, and the dynamics of floating vis-à-vis grounded wind turbines are thoroughly expounded upon to aid practitioners in achieving more accurate performance modelling. This is a work of paramount usefulness for areas which have long wanted to jump on the renewable energy bandwagon, but have thus far been hampered by their natural geographical limitations.

Book Modeling and Control of Static Converters for Hybrid Storage Systems

Download or read book Modeling and Control of Static Converters for Hybrid Storage Systems written by Fekik, Arezki and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-09-17 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The energy transition initiated in recent years has enabled the growing integration of renewable production into the energy mix. Microgrids make it possible to maximize the efficiency of energy transmission from source to consumer by bringing the latter together geographically and by reducing losses linked to transport. However, the lack of inertia and the micro-grid support system makes it weak, and energy storage is necessary to ensure its proper functioning. Current storage technologies do not make it possible to provide both a large capacity of energy and power at the same time. Hybrid storage is a solution that combines the advantages of several technologies and reduces their disadvantages. Modeling and Control of Static Converters for Hybrid Storage Systems covers the modeling, control theorems, and optimization techniques that solve many scientific problems for researchers in the field of power converter control for renewable energy hybrid storage and places particular emphasis on the modeling and control of static converters for hybrid storage systems.
