Book A Method for Including Operation and Maintenance Costs in the Economic Analysis of Active Solar Energy Systems

Download or read book A Method for Including Operation and Maintenance Costs in the Economic Analysis of Active Solar Energy Systems written by W. D. Short and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a developing technology such as solar energy, the costs for operation and maintenance (O&M) can be substantial. In the past, most economic analyses included these costs by simply assuming that an annual cost will be incurred that is proportional to the initial cost of the system. However, in assessing the economics of new systems proposed for further research and development, such asimplification can obscure the issues. For example, when the typical method for including O&M costs in an economic analysis is used, the O&M costs associated with a newly developed, more reliable, and slightly more expensive controller will be assumed to increase--an obvious inconsistency. The method presented in this report replaces this simplistic approach with a representation of the coststhat explicitly accounts for the uncertainties and risks inherent in the operation of any equipment. A detailed description of the data inputs required by the method is included as well as a summary of data sources and an example of the method as applied to an active solar heating system.

Book Best Practices for Operation and Maintenance of Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Systems 3rd Edition

Download or read book Best Practices for Operation and Maintenance of Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Systems 3rd Edition written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this guide is to reduce the cost and improve the effectiveness of operations and maintenance (O&M) for photovoltaic (PV) systems and combined PV and energy storage systems. Reported O&M costs vary widely based on the requirements of the system and the nature of the O&M contract, but a more standardized approach to planning and delivering O&M has the potential to both decrease costs and make those costs more predictable over time. This guide encourages adoption of best practices to reduce the cost of O&M and improve the performance of fielded systems, but it also enhances financing of new projects by making cost more predictable and mitigating performance risk. This guide also includes technical improvement opportunities in the design of systems and in specification of equipment because high-quality system deployment improves lifetime project performance and energy production while reducing, or at least optimizing, costs to deliver an O&M program. This guide provides recommendations that increase the effectiveness of O&M services; reduce O&M costs, improve solar asset transparency for investors and rating agencies; provide an industry framework for quality management; and reduce transaction costs.

Book Sizing and operation of residential photovoltaic systems in combination with battery storage systems and heat pumps

Download or read book Sizing and operation of residential photovoltaic systems in combination with battery storage systems and heat pumps written by Jan von Appen and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2018-08-27 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thriving business case of residential photovoltaic systems in combination with battery storage systems and other flexibility options, such as heat pumps, leads to additional questions for PV network integration and increases the complexity of planning processes for all involved stakeholders – especially for investors and distribution network operators. In this thesis mixed integer linear and bilevel optimization models are developed for evaluating the interdependencies between these stakeholders and their strategic decision making. A case study-based approach allows assessing how different incentives impact sizing and operation of PV battery storage systems, their network integration and their complementarity towards other flexibility options for improved sector coupling. The analysis of the case studies underlines the importance of using multi-stakeholder optimization models. Appropriate incentive setting and sector coupling decelerate emerging self-reinforcing processes between higher network charges, larger system sizes and inefficient PV network integration. Furthermore, curtailment limits and peak charges help activating a network-supporting operation of battery storage systems and other flexibilities.

Book Methods Algorithms and Circuits for Photovoltaic Systems Diagnosis and Control

Download or read book Methods Algorithms and Circuits for Photovoltaic Systems Diagnosis and Control written by Giovanni Spagnuolo and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern photovoltaic systems, there is an ever-increasing need to improve the system efficiency, to detect internal faults and to guarantee service continuity. The only way to meet these objectives is to utilize and create synergies between diagnostic techniques and control algorithms. Diagnostic methods can be implemented through module-dedicated electronics, by running on real-time embedded systems or by using a huge database on the cloud, profiting from artificial intelligence, machine learning, and classifiers. Model-based diagnostic approaches and data-driven methods are attracting the interest of the scientific community for the automatic detection of phenomena like the occurrence of hot spots, the increase of the ohmic losses, the degradation due to unexpected potentials (PID), switch failures in power electronic converters, and also the reduction of the power production due to soiling or partial shadowing. The detection of malfunctioning or even faults affecting the whole power conversion chain, from the photovoltaic modules to the power conversion stages, allows to perform proper control actions, also in terms of MPPT. Control algorithms, running on an embedded system, are optimized, e.g., through the online adaptation of their own parameters, by suitably processing data coming from the diagnostic algorithms. This book presents recent and original results about the diagnostic approaches to photovoltaic modules and related power electronics and control strategies with the aim to maximize the photovoltaic output power, to increase the whole system efficiency and to guarantee service continuity.
